We stayed at the Rex Halcyon Cove on a room only basis for a week in early March 2004.
Our booking was with Expedia, and we were looking for a room only holiday with virtually guaranteed sun and a good selection of restaurants nearby. Having read the reviews of this and other similarly priced hotels on the site, we chose the Rex and were ultimately very pleased with our choice.
I'll now proceed to describe the elements of the holiday that we were looking to find out about when we were reading these reviews (all prices are in US dollars):
Location The hotel is excellently located at the top end of Dickenson Bay, home of possibly the best beach in Antigua, some say one of the best in the world. It is right next to Sandals, which itself says something about the quality of the location, and is within an easy taxi ride of the capital, St.Johns. The sea in the bay is fantastic for swimming, sloping gently, enabling you to still stand up in sand around 30 metres out.
Dining There are two restaurants a 5 minute walk along the beach past Sandals : The Beach and Coconut Grove, both of which enjoy a beachfront location and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner - breakfast tended to be around $10 per person. A short walk up the hill from the hotel is Parri's Pizza and Steakhouse, which we used twice for evening meals - it offers superb meals, especially the ribs and chicken combo, for around $45 per person for a 2 course meal including a bottle of wine.
The capital, St.Johns, is only a 5 minute taxi ride away, with a return trip costing $15 - a large selection of restaurants (10-15) is available including Chinese and traditional Caribbean, which you can read about in the book in each room. Simply ask a taxi driver based at the hotel to take you there and pick you up afterwards. Hemingways in St.Johns afforded us a particularly nice meal, again at around $45 per person for a 2 course meal including wine. It is possible to pay to eat at the hotel restaurants, and we did have continental breakfast twice at the wonderfully situated Warri Pier hotel restaurant, sitting on stilts in the sea - this was around $10 per person.
Swimming Pool/Gardens The gardens were well tended, with an army of gardeners tasked with keeping things tidy - althought they didn't appear to work hard, the gardens were in very good condition. The swimming pool is excellent, adequtely sized, shaped like a plump cashew nut and with a deep end depth of 9 feet. Whilst not for long distance swimming, it is possible to do a good few circular circuits if you feel the need. The only negative point was the people who persisted with reserving sunbeds for themselves at the crack of dawn every morning - although as everyone knows, sadly this practice is not just restricted to this hotel.
The Room Our booking was for a superior garden room, but on arrival we were allocated a poolside room (perhaps Expedia has a lot of influence with the hotel?). The room was lovely and clean, very spacious, with a white tiled floor, a queen sized bed, fridge and cable television. Our balcony gave us a view looking across the pool area to the sea. The room was extremely nice and I can't fault it.
The Competition Whilst on the island, we hired a car for a day and couldn't resist visiting the other hotels which we had been considering staying at : The Royal Antiguan looked a little drab and was quite tucked away from any other island life - there was no evidence of any restaurants within walking distance. The Jolly Harbour was a smart enough Marina with a large sandy beach, although it looked as though getting about would involve a large amount of walking - a fact borne out by the presence of golf carts for staff to get around.
Conclusions We had a wonderful week at the Rex Halcyon Cove and I would highly recommend it. Whilst I can't comment on the all inclusive option, I can confidently say there is a good selection of restaurants of a good quality which are easily accessible. Having looked at the other similarly priced hotels once we were there, we were 100% convinced we had made the right choice.
