“All ashore for the Halcyon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

Have just returned from another stay at the Halcyon. Enjoyed the stay, catering was good and the staff were excellent.

One of the reasons we chose to return was that on previous visits we had enjoyed leisurely lunches on the Warri Pier. On check in this time, we were advised that the Pier was closed at lunchtimes and was only available for resident guests dinners on two nights per stay. It was annoying to find that it was not available for resident guest lunches because it was solely being used to provide lunches for cruise line passengers on day visits.

Perhaps Rex should appraise the situation to ensure priority is given to their resident guests. At very least, Rex should make it apparent on their website what facilities are actually available to their residents.

Room Tip: Poolside room are spacious and have a good view

I agre with other reviews that the hotel staff are doing their best. The hotel is past its best before date and needs a retrofit (musty bathroom, mould on walls, intermittment power failures, worn linens etc.) The beach is beautiful but is swarmed nearly every day by cruise ship passengers so there are no loungers availble for guests. For the money, this is not good value. I don't recommend it. Jan S.

I flew to Antigua, via New York, as a Single Dad with my 2 children (aged 10 and 8). I was going for a 3 week beach/waterports based holiday. The holiday could not have been any better. It was fabulous. I travel globally with my job and I'm used to staying in hotels with 5/6 star service and ammenities (ie, Ritz Carlton Singapore and Burj Dubai, Dubai). The Halcycon Cove staff were all this and more - they could not have tried harder to make a holiday of it for both me and the kids (thanks to Dalston, Fenton, Collette, Michael, Wendell and ALL OF YOU). The beach was immaculate as was the hotel. It might not have been black tie and tails come the evenings, but what children look for this? The hotel was clean, functional and relaxing - was described by some as a 3* hotel in a 5* location. It was - if not more! It was alot of fun and very, very easy going. The holiday was sold to me for its sailing facilities - I must have sailed one of the Hobie Cats for between 2-5 hours EVERY day (thanks Kent). When my children didn't want to come sailing they would play safely around the pool, or on the beach - the staff would always have an eye out for them. Being all-inclusive was fab - no hassle if the children wanted a drink etc. The hotel really tried hard at Christmas with the dinners - fab! Warri Pier was a pleasant diversion. Next to the Halcyon Cove is the Sandals Resort - I thought by a country mile, the Halcyon Cove had the best beach! Beware of the taxi-racket. Unfortunately it seems unavoidable - shame the hotel can't organise 'shuttles' to fixed locations on fixed days (they can't because it was would cause an outrage with the local taxis). Overall, It was a fab, fab family holiday. My family and I were very fortunate to have had our time there. Here is a link to a YouTube video we made that shows some of the Hobie Cat sailing and Santa coming onto the beach on Christmas Day via jet-ski ....

Room Tip: Pool SIde was fab for my children - very, very safe

Antigua is beautiful. Resort is a bit dated, but the staff is wonderful. Yvette in reception was amazing. We discussed my passion for collecting money from other countries and she went out of her way to find the missing coins I was looking for on her day off. Fenton was a true sport in always trying to get people to participate in daily activities. Without paying to upgrade we got a king size bed in an ocean front room. Literally the beach was 15' from our room. The beach was amazing, the only draw back to this dated resort was the food was mediocre, and the power goes out sometimes twice a day usually in the evening, but typically only lasts a few minutes. Warri pier was great. I recommend paying $100 us to rent the taxi for the day. They took us to Shirley heights, Nelson's dock yard, snorkelling in long bay beach, devils bridge and everywhere we wanted to go. No line ups, no rush like the tours. You have a personnel chauffeur for the same price as renting a car. Cars are right hand drive and you drive on the left side of the road, with lots of roundabouts. The roads are very narrow. I recommend the taxi.

Room Tip: Rent a taxi for the day. Very relaxing, no rush tour of the entire island. PS. The rooms have no fac...

We have just returned from a 2 week stay here and knowing it was a 3 star hotel not a 5 star were not expecting the ritz!
However a clean room would have been nice and not unreasonable. Mould and lime scale covered the bath and shower and some paint on the walls and ceilings instead of a dirty coloured peeling mess,
And this room was an upgrade!
Service was appaling, if you wanted a drink the bar staff would grunt or just point at you rather than speak or smile. Food.... Where to start. Firstly you wait ages to be seated as most tables were still full of dirty plates. If you are lucky when seated you may get asked if you want a drink from the bar. Don't hold your breath, it may arrive just as you are about to leave and if it does hope you like warm red wine and beer!
Then the food.... Breakfast not too bad, reasonable choice and ok. Lunch at beach bar daily. Always burger, chips, hotdog, chips! Butterfish daily ! Few other bits but it's only lunch so bearable. Evening meal..... Oh this is where it all goes horribly wrong. Again you wait ages to be seated after being left at the desk and ignored by most of the staff. Lots of tables uncleared with birds eating any remnants. You may get offered a drink as before ( if you're lucky that is!)
Then you go to get your food..... If there are plates they are cold. If there is food it's normally cold too. On taking some beef stew and dauphinois potato I went to eat and the potato was raw. I wasn't being fussy or moaning but honestly it was raw. The cheese top had melted that was it. The beef chunk had a 3mm thick vein or tube running through it!!! Disgusting. I asked the executive chef over and asked him to eat this and he turned his nose up and refused! Says it all when the chef won't even eat what they serve up. Every day the food and service were poor at best with lots of complaints which when you speak to them about they deny but just ask any guest!!
They say you can eat on the warri pier twice per week subject to booking it. Be advised you have limited choice unless you want to pay loads extra. Also when full with 400 guests and they only have 3 sittings per night with 12 guest per sitting do the maths.... 36 per night times the 5 nights it's open equals 180 covers per week. If all guest went twice it equals 800 so good luck with that!
All In all if you want to pay lots of money for a dirty room, poor service, poor food and don't mind cockroaches in your room or running along the bar when you're having a drink then this is the place for you!!
On the plus side the taxi guys are very helpful and friendly. You use them lots going to and from restaurants so you can get some good food. The beach is lovely and the weather is great

the hotel is what it says when you book it 3* but the staff are 5* and so is the location. we had a fabulous two weeks there made even better by the beautiful normalyn who is the most helpful receptionist we have ever come across and if you stay here you should definitley speak to her as not only will she make you smile, anything you may require or need help with she is the person to speak to as is the handsome smiling bubbly mario what a great pair to greet you and help you enjoy your stay so thankyou very much. the staff are all very good errol, austin julian magaret to name just a few. the beach is beautiful it should be as its also sandals beach. the lunchtime menu could do with a bit more variation and the cocktail menu should also have mojitos on there but all in all ws a great stay.

Room Tip: pool rooms are the best

We had a very relaxing two weeks in this lovely location. "We like a challenge" was the comment from Devon the Asst Manager and we certainly provided them with a few which they dealt with admirably. My wife has a food allergy and whilst it took a little time for them to get to grips with this, the new Executive Chef Dale was a star in providing food within the All-Inclusive package which did not contain the offending ingredient - which was in virtually all the other food. We initally booked a beach front room but found it too noisy from the little frogs that sqeaked all night from dusk to dawn. Mario found us a great poolside room, which was bigger and had good views, another crisis diverted! The Chinese Acupressure from Wendy was a real winner, my wife went four times during our stay and went home a new woman. Fenton and the Aqua aerobics, together with his sense of humour was great entertainment. Food on the Warri Pier was of an exceptional standard. We probably were not the easiest customers to deal with but the staff certainly made our holiday special and nothing was too much trouble

Room Tip: I would not recommend the beach front rooms, they are small and noisy, the poolside are much bigger...
