After reading some bad reviews, I was anxious that the hotel would be disappointing. I booked this holiday on a very good internet deal, for just myself and my partner on an all-inc. basis. I was surprised to find that our 'standard' room was very satisfactory (certainly not dirty as one review mentioned) - I was expecting to have to upgrade, but this wasn't necessary. The breakfast/lunch and all day drinks were fine - the standard is really what you get in any all-inclusive Caribbean hotel, even the most expensive resorts - the difference in the buffet experience here was that I found a lot of bad mannered guests pushing like animals to get at food or to get their's first - even digging into salad at lunchtime in speedos, with their sweaty flesh hanging over the salad bar. The offer of the evening buffets was disappointing. The hotel was obviously trying to accommodate the classic 'what Europeans want' rubbish - Chinese, Spanish even a German Buffet!! Where was the local food? We did not therefore eat dinner in the hotel apart from the Warri Pier which requires a supplement. There are plenty of really good restaurants in the area - Home, Coconut Grove, Commissioner's Grill, Papa Zouk and for cheap eats, Hemingway's in town is OK. It is not cheap to eat out in Antigua, but the quality is good and I didn't mind going spending the extra for dinner because we got such a good deal on the all inclusive basis anyway. The locals are very, very nice. The taxi drivers at the hotel are the best for local knowledge and tours - they offer very reasonable rates for afternoons out etc. The beach is fantastic - again, slightly spoilt by bad mannered guests claiming their sun loungers at the crack of dawn with the 'towel' trick. Vendors are no problem. All in all, offered the same deal, I would go back to this hotel because we got what we paid for, with the opportunity of seeing some very beautiful sights. I would advise NOT to book through a travel agent as you will not get what you paid for.

We stayed at the RHC for a week at the beginning of September 2003 in a Superior poolside room on an All Inclusive basis. Overall the holiday met our expectations, food was good, the variety at lunchtime was limited but use your imagination and the combinations are plentiful.
Some of the staff were a bit miserable, but on the whole it was great value for money. The beach was fantastic, and our room was always clean. We enjoyed every minute of it.

having read the reviews two weeks before we went to the rex halcyon we were a little concerned as to what to expect.well we got back today 18th sept and yes we were very disappointed with the all inclusive package and what we paid ,it was not value for money. The whole Hotel is in need of a refit, the pool has tiles badly broken but it was clean.Staff were always polite and helpful.Food lunch time was a joke always the same, burger, hot dog spag bol, mash ,jacket and salad ,some sort of fruit pie with no cream and chopped up melon(left from breakfast i dare say, no imagination at all.Eve meals were not too bad but still not a great variety .warri pier was ok only place you can get chips or ice cream. beach was great as were the locals very friendly.our air con. leaked on the balcony so we had our own private pool to step onto.also the perimeter fencing between the beach and carib bar is falling down, lots of health and saftey issues their.the vip trip in air con. 4x4 was excellant and taxi drivers very informative, lovely island but shame about hotel.would not use the rex hotel again, but would go back to antigua

Myself and my family went to the Rex Halcyon in july for 3 wks and i have to be honest , this place is like the house that jack built, having read all the reviews we thought it can't be that bad , but it was. how many people got ear infection's from the pool? we did and so did several others besides 1 or 2 the staff were rude, and the food was just awful. we will defo be not going back to the Rex , but Antigua has a whole was lovely.

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Rex Halcyon Cove. It was very much a last minute decision and we had no choice over which hotel we stayed at. Having read TripAdvisor comments before we left we were apprehensive to say the least. However, we were pleasantly surprised.
Our room (garden superior) was large, clean and lovely and was over the far end of the resort, away from the bar and the noise but a few steps from one of the best beaches I have ever been to. There can be a bit of a 'Butlins' air about the place, especially Happy Hour at the Beach Bar, but the beach is large enough to escape if you want to. The food at the restaurant was ok but the subidised Warri Pier was excellent for dinner. It is also worth visiting the 2 restaurants at the far end of the beach, even if just for coffee and desert after dinner. The people were amazingly friendly, even the vendors on the beach, who will happily take no for an answer and leave you in peace. We hired a jeep which was a great way to see all of the island. It is very safe, except road signs are non-existent, but the locals are amazingly helpful when you get lost! Would not hesitate to go back, would opt for B&B though as there are too many lovely restaurants to visit.
