Our room was spacious and clean, if tatty, and nicely located with a side view to the beach. We found the hotel staff delightful, in particular Dwayne at the beach bar, and Orlan who is pretty much a legend on this sight now. The reception staff were a little more measured, but I suspect that was because they constantly had to field complaints. For example, we had no hot water for our entire stay. There is a Fawlty Towers aspect to this hotel.
The food is variable - breakfast is outstanding (much to do with Orlan) but after that it is pretty drab. Supper after 3 nights was as much as we could do and ate out after this even though we were A/I. I am veggie and would have had to eat rice and veg for the entire 14 nights. My partner isn't veggie but lost interest quite quickly too. Pari's Pizza and Steak house just up the road from the resort entrance was super, and the Beach restaurant past Sandals was nice too.
The resort is low key until you get to the beach, and it was the beach that was the major disappointment. The sand is lovely and although the sea is blue, it is totally cloudy - you can't see further than your own hand. People stood on a jelly fish and glass while we were there as they couldn't even see their feet in the shallow bit. It also shelves quickly and isn't of the gently lapping at the shore type, so my partner who isn't a strong swimmer very quickly lost confidence and only used the (tiny) pool. Swimmers are also penned into small areas by marker buoys as the sea is the equivalent of the M25 on a Friday afternoon - jet skis, banana inflatables, ribs, glass bottomed boats, excursions, catamarans, mooring ropes etc. Obviously don't bother trying to snorkel.
The beach vendors visit frequently and are mostly nice. They know when the planes come in and who is new. Eventually they will leave you alone though unless you want to have a chat, which we enjoyed doing so on a few occasions. We also got offered drugs on several occasions.
Do Eli's Eco Trip - it was beautiful and gave some interesting information about the island. We also enjoyed the circumnavigation trip.
The decent beaches are in the Southern half of the island, in particular Turners beach (which Rex Blue Heron is on) and all the adjacent ones - Darkwood, Fryes etc.
Hiring a car and being able to escape made the holiday for us. The aforementioned beaches, Betty's Hope, English Harbour, Shirley Heights all worth visiting. St Johns is interesting but very geared up for the cruise ship contingent who get deposited there every day in their hundreds.
The roads are truly an experience. Playing dodge the crater was quite fun!
Mozzies are everywhere, but we used Deet based repellants religiously, and had no problems with them (although some people had clearly been eaten alive by them).
All in all, the place wasn't dreadful, but I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending it to anyone.
