My husband and I just returned from a long weekend Jan 28th which ended up being longer than we thought it would be. We are well traveled and have been to most islands in the Caribbean. We knew we were not going to stay at a 5 star resort, but to be honest this would be shut down in the United States.
Where do I begin?
No hot water (we were there 5 days!)
No washcloths
Large gaps around room doors.
Dilapidated bathrooms
When we checked in late at night, we were escorted to our first floor beachfront room. It was late and we were tired. The bathroom light did not work, the phone did not work, the Formica was delaminating from the bathroom counter, the toilet was loose, and windows with only screens on one wall. Oh, did I mention the 1" gap under the door? See photos.
Needless to say we requested another room. The new room was on the 2nd floor overlooking the pool. Only slightly better. We did have windows to keep the air conditioning in, the bathroom was only slightly better. Still had problems with the phone, and the blow dryer did not work, however they did provide me with a small travel dryer (obviously, this has happened before). I don't think our sheets were ever changed and I know the coffee pot was never cleaned out. We did eventually get new bath towels each day. During the day you could still see light coming in around the door, but not as bad as the first room. Did I mention 5 days and NO HOT WATER?
The beach was nice. They provide you with 1 beach towel per person which you are supposed to be able to trade in for a new one from 9-11 in the morning and 3-5 in the afternoon. GOOD LUCK. They are rarely there on time, and when they are the clean towels are seldom folded. Oh!, that’s only if you are lucky enough to get there before they run out..
As for the food, breakfast was edible and they had someone cooking eggs made to order if you wished.
Lunch by the bar EVERY day was reheated hamburgers, hot dogs and some strange looking pizza.
We only ate dinner there one night and chose to eat out the other evenings. FYI There are some fabulous restaurants not too far from the hotel.
The staff was not rude, but not overly helpful either. I suppose they did what they could with what they have to work with.
Overall, I think this was a fabulous resort back in the 60's, but am suprised it gets the ranking it has. Rex resorts has let this go to shambles and have not put $1 into the complex since it was built. We visited their other resorts, Hawskbill looks to be the nicer but looks aged also. If you have any doubts about staying there, listen to your instincts, and save your hard earned money for a place where you can enjoy your vacation.
