We’ve stayed in the Halcyon Antigua from December 8 till December 19.
I had read the reviews on tripadvisor before making my reservation with this hotel. Why I ignored all the advices where readers warn not to go there I will never know, but if you are having your doubts about this hotel, please take my advice (and all the others on this site) do not go there!
When we arrived we were brought to room 341, the first impression of the room was okay, but little did we know. We had many cockroaches in our room, they even crawled into our bed at night! We complained about this and it was promised they would spray the room and change the sheets. We witnessed how the room was sprayed, housekeeping was spraying as if it was perfume and not bug spray! Only two little sprays in the air would be sufficient enough they said.
They left the spray and we sprayed everywhere we could think of every day. This resulted in the fact that we found dead roaches on a daily bases.
The beds are terrible and should be thrown out years ago; we woke up every day with sore arms and back. The fabric around the bed was covered with old blood stains.
The premises of the hotel are really poor, there is a lot of maintenance that just hasn’t been done. Broken lamps, sun beds doors a lot of debris. The chairs at the pier are all broken, they are metal chairs and there is not one that is not damaged. It’s really a shame because during night you can sit there and enjoy the view and watch over the sea.
The food is okay, but very average. When the BBQ starts at the beach restaurant the food is so slow served that all other warm food on your plate is cold when you get to the meat and fish. This is same at diner time at the Warri restaurant!
The Warri restaurant, the food is fine, but when my husband went to the toilet he thought he had opened a secret door to India, he never had seen such a dirty toilet in his life. When he wanted to wash his hands he noticed a dripping crane with in the sink a small mounting of limestone in it, so that must have been cleaned at least years ago will it build up like that.
We talked to the manager Chris who we thought could do his job somewhat better. We complained about the cockroaches, unmotivated and unfriendly staff, and the maintenance of the premises all together. He was only hiding behind excuses such as difficult to find good staff and no budget available. That he was picking up the paper napkins himself (the premises is full of it) even though he told the staff to do so. But really how much budget do you need to replace 30 chairs at the pier, or to put little ashtrays on the beach tables so people do not use the beach as one? How much will it cost to instruct housekeeping a little beter and to check yourself if they understand what you expect from them. He obviously does not use the toilet at the Warri restaurant otherwise he must have seen how dirty it is. An absolute no go advise for this hotel. Hygiene is not good, maintenance is not done for quit some time. The beach is beautiful though, but there are 364 other beaches to choose from.
