We stayed at the Inn at English harbour in January 2006. We booked a junior suite and a 'superior' suite for our party. The suite was not a suite at all, it actually consisted of only one room. In the oxford English dictionary a suite is defined as 'a set of rooms for one person’s or family’s use or for a particular purpose '. ( a similar definition is in american dictionaries. ). Watch out that you are not conned by this mis decription. The rooms themselves are very good. Very clean with minimal, but nice furniture in good condition. The bathroom is large, but does not contain a bath, only a shower. ( a large walk in shower ). Hot water was intermittent. As reported by other members already, you can hear the people above you moving around if you are unfortunate enough to be on the ground floor. The hotel area is generally quiet, but if other people choose to be noisy, you can hear them clearly, as all of the windows are open for cooling.
The rooms are mostly in three wooden blocks at the bottom of a cliff. The restaurant / reception is at the top of the cliff. If you call reception a car will give you a lift to and from the top.
The hotel restaurant is extremely expensive. Its easy to spend 100 american dollars on a meal for 2 with only one glass of wine each. They not only charge a high price for the food, they also add on an extra 10% for service, then an extra 8.5% for government tax. Then, just to extract some more money from you, they bill you in American dollars, and then convert it to east carribean dollars at an exchange rate that is worse than the official one. This probably adds an extra 5% to the bill.
There are many better value restaurants a short taxi ride away in English Harbour. Try 'trappers' which the locals go to. Apart from the cost, the service is excellent. The food I felt was reasonably good. ( I sent back one dish which was not cooked ! ). If you are on 'half-board', then you each from a reduced version of the a la carte menu each night.
They will also charge you 12 american dollars for a continental breakfast – at least 15 us dollars by the time everything has been added on to it. ( per person ).
There is another restaurant in the nearby Galleon beach club, which is a third of the cost. The food is at least as good. This is a short walk along the beach.
There is a large size swimming pool which is usually deserted. It is clean and well kept.
The beach is small with a mixture of sand and gravel. There are sun loungers and umbrellas for customers free use. The gardens / grounds are well kept and quite pretty.
We found all of the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The most helpful were the Antiguan staff.
( apart from the boatman, who was quite rude, presumably he was having a bad week ! ). Despite being in English Harbour, this is an Italian run hotel.
I believe you could have a very enjoyable stay here, so long as you realise what you are getting. Try and get breakfast included in your rate.
