My fiancée and I just returned from a week at Jumby Bay (to get engaged). We had a wonderful, romantic time, and we’d like to thank TripAdvisor in helping us select this beautiful resort - the reviews posted here were VERY accurate (right down to the warning about bumping one's head on the low beach umbrellas - which I did anyway!).
But the minor danger of the beach umbrellas is one of the few faults of Jumby Bay. Yes, the air conditioning in the rooms is weak. Yes, the biting insects require diligent bug spray effort (especially in the resort’s inadequate computer room, which really doubles as a mosquito aviary). And yes, the airport is quite noticeable. One night we made a circle of candles around a hammock on the beach, watched the stars and listened to the steel drum band off at the Veranda bar. Unfortunately, our moment of peace was interrupted by the roar of the 9:30pm Virgin Airlines 747 to London climbing-out overhead. At that moment, we felt that Jumby Bay’s position across the water from the airport excluded it from ever being a true five-star resort. But as our week went on and we kept discovering things we liked about Jumby Bay, these small problems seemed to matter less and less.
The place is just breathtaking. Jumby Bay is on a garden-like island just small enough to walk around in an hour. This makes the resort very private and quiet. The beach is perfect (the water is picture-postcard clear and blue, the sand is like sugar, and the seashells and little fish at one’s feet are delightful – and, it faces west, so you can always watch the sunset). The staff is attentive and genuinely eager to please. We found the décor of our room charming. We especially loved the lounge at the Estate House – we went before dinner just to hang out and enjoy its plantation ambience. Even the complimentary toiletries were the nicest we’re ever had at a hotel.
But the food is a major attraction - it was simply magnificent. The buffet at the Veranda was overflowing with delicious dishes, and the menu at the more formal Estate House was better still (especially the dessert table). Even after our fourth night dining there we still hadn’t tried everything we had wanted to.
I think we especially appreciated Jumby Bay because our first few days on Antigua we spent at the St. James Club. It was a perfectly adequate 3-star resort, but the rooms were austere, the food was bland, and the beach was heavy on seaweed. Coming to Jumby Bay was an entirely different experience - much less of the zoo-like qualities of the other resorts on the main island.
Earlier this year, we also stayed the Four Seasons on Maui, which is supposed to be one of the best hotels in the world. We loved it, but we’ve decided that Jumby Bay was even more suited to an intimate, romantic vacation in the tropics. We would like to try some other resorts in the Caribbean first, but they will have a tough job measuring up to the delightful time we had at Jumby Bay. I’m sure, in the end, we will come back!
