We have just returned from a very disappointing holiday at Dian Bay. The location could make Dian Bay a great hotel should they get the levels of service, food and appearance right.
The over-powering smell of raw sewerage when checking in and listening to other guests complaining about their rooms, the food etc etc did set alarm bells ringing as soon as we arrived.
The main problem however is that Dian Bay sells itself as a resort and spa where “the Euro-Caribbean cuisine combines the finest local produce with favorite international dishes.” The food is in fact appalling. The plates are hotter than the food; there is very little choice and no imagination from the chef at all. There must be some restriction on dollar value per head per meal as the cuts of meat are the cheapest and usually very little meat on the pile of bones served to you. Lunch consists of toasted sandwiches or pasta, the same filling or sauces day after day…. Not exactly finest local produce or even favourite international dishes. After two days the food was so bad that we changed from an all-inclusive rate to a room only basis. The bar on all the brochures says that it is open until midnight – very often they tried to close at 10:30 but were always closed by 11:00.
As a Spa you may reasonably expect the jacuzzi to be filled with water and working rather than empty and with exposed wires trailing around the floor. At a Spa you may also expect a little pampering, not here guests are expected to collect their own towels, sun bed cushions and then also to run up and down between the pools to the bar and back if a refreshing drink is needed.
This hotel is being marketed as 4 stars. (We booked basis this.) This is the star rating of the resort’s marketing company and if a general European star rating standards were applied then personally I think Dian Bay may just about make 2 stars. The lack of service, general rundown feel, smell of sewerage and diabolical food hardly add up to much more.
I would not go again to Dian Bay for a holiday but what makes me sad was the number of people who were also complaining to the management about the general standards at the resort (mainly catering or noisy rooms), and for those for whom it was their first time in Antigua, most said they had no intention of ever going back to what is a fantastic island. For that you need look no further than Dian Bay – it does Antigua no favours.
