Having just returned from Calabash Cottage in the Galley Bay section of Antigua, I am compelled to warn anyone who is thinking about renting one of Natalie Murphy's Galley Bay Cottages (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE GALLEY BAY ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORT) to avoid it at all costs. Any photos or video sent to you from the owner of the cottages is dated, and does not remotely represent the condition of the property now. The cottages are now run down, falling apart, and awful. Our week in paradise to celebrate my husband's birthday was almost ruined by the substandard accommodations at Galley Bay Cottages. After 4 days of making due in our two bedroom cottage--with no locks on our doors, the owner's dog roaming freely in and out of our cottage (because the doors would not stay shut- to prevent him from entering) not having enough hot water for 4 people to shower to get ready for dinner (we were told by Natalie to take "Antiguan showers"-- I was unaware that Antiguans preferred cold showers or using the ocean to bathe in), no coffee maker, a rust covered toaster brought in to replace the broken toaster that came with the place upon arrival, a refrigerator that is held closed by a lock, and toilets with no back covers on them, we were awakened in the middle of the night to a horrific noise coming from under our bedroom that lasted 90 minutes. When the loud banging finally died down we were without any water-- as was the cottage adjacent to ours. I walked up to the owner’s house in the morning to report the problem- and from her response realized that this problem had occurred before. She came down to our cottage to reposition a GARDEN HOSE into our water tank. My husband and our friend went under the cottage to look at things-- and that is when we realized that the tank and the pump both had leaks, and that our little water tank was also servicing the cottage in front of us. No small wonder that we didn't have hot water, or enough water. Additionally, the water was coming from a hotel up the hill via the garden hose- the house we had rented in good faith did not have ANY water of its own. We tried to find the owner again to inquire about when we would have clean water but she had locked up her house and left the premises. Although the water tank began to fill from the garden hose- the water in the house was now BROWN. We could not brush our teeth or bathe in the water. Unwilling to let the last 3 days of our vacation be spent with either no water or dirty water, and with no sense of urgency from the owner to make things right, we packed up and moved to a hotel. We requested our money back for the nights we did not stay in Calabash Cottage, but were told by the owner that she would not refund it. Fortunately, after a week of trying to get some money back, our booking agency, Caribbean Days came to our rescue and refunded the money for the three nights we could not stay in the uninhabitable cottage, at their expense. I do not advise anyone to stay at the Galley Bay Cottages as the owner has no qualms in ripping people off. And I do advise everyone to use a booking agency when renting any property over the internet- We were not looking for luxury when we booked the cottage. Clean running water would have been nice.
