OK, to start with i want to comment on the tradgic incident that happened at this resort at the end of July, my (new) wife and I arrived the day after the incident and needless to say the mood was somber, a lot of the guests had either gone home or moved to a different hotel, although a few remained, adament that they were not going to allow this to spoil their honeymoon/holiday.
The resort staff were very upset and this was very clear to see, you really do build up a great relationship with the staff over the period of your stay and this is why i think it hurt more than normal, the staff see you as a friend and not just a room number like many other hotels/resorts i've stopped at.
They put on a brave face and continued to offer a friendly and efficiant service to the guests that remained, many couples had immediately cancelled their stay at cocos following the media coverage and the resort was much quiter than it maybe would have been at this time of year, however as more guests arrived (mainly italians) the mood got better.
The staff in my opinion deserve the highest praise, they were incredibly friendly, helpful and always gave you a smile, the food was very good indeed, top quality and service equally as good, the huts were basic but cosy, clean and all you needed for a quiet getaway..especially a honeymoon when in reality you shouldnt need/want a TV in the room, the mosquito nets over the bed were a great saviour from being plagued by mosquitos all night long, the beach and the caribbean sea view from the huts was breathtaking and all in all i find it difficult to come up with anything negative about the resort, except for maybe the following......the bombardment of locals who interupted your beach sleeping time was very annoying, yes they were trying to get business by offering boat trips.jet skis etc but cocos really need to look at this problem, the beach isnt privately owned although it is normally very quiet due to it being at the end of a long stretch and you will normally only find cocos guests here (the odd person or 2 from jolly beach resort and sometimes a couple of locals appeared) and the beach beds are exclusively for cocos guests only, it was my opinion that if I wanted to book a jet ski, boat trip then I could quite easily approach the person selling that service and not have to constantly say 'no thank you' all day long to the various locals who would approach you throughout the day, the jet ski guy was probably the most persistant salesman i've ever met, i counted 4 times in one day when he approached my wife and I asking if i wanted to jet ski, that did get very annoying!! and i think that also due to the recent incident people were a little on edge and didnt want randomers approaching them all day long.
All in all...a fantastic resort, very basic yes....but for a real 'get away from it all' holiday/honeymoon then it was perfect, great staff, great food, great beach.great views.
Security does need looking at and improvements are being made at this time, if the weather is great then its a perfect relaxing holiday, if the weather isnt so good then i think boredom would be a major factor......but there is always shopping, sight seeing that can be done!!
