OK, to start with i want to comment on the tradgic incident that happened at this resort at the end of July, my (new) wife and I arrived the day after the incident and needless to say the mood was somber, a lot of the guests had either gone home or moved to a different hotel, although a few remained, adament that they were not going to allow this to spoil their honeymoon/holiday.

The resort staff were very upset and this was very clear to see, you really do build up a great relationship with the staff over the period of your stay and this is why i think it hurt more than normal, the staff see you as a friend and not just a room number like many other hotels/resorts i've stopped at.

They put on a brave face and continued to offer a friendly and efficiant service to the guests that remained, many couples had immediately cancelled their stay at cocos following the media coverage and the resort was much quiter than it maybe would have been at this time of year, however as more guests arrived (mainly italians) the mood got better.

The staff in my opinion deserve the highest praise, they were incredibly friendly, helpful and always gave you a smile, the food was very good indeed, top quality and service equally as good, the huts were basic but cosy, clean and all you needed for a quiet getaway..especially a honeymoon when in reality you shouldnt need/want a TV in the room, the mosquito nets over the bed were a great saviour from being plagued by mosquitos all night long, the beach and the caribbean sea view from the huts was breathtaking and all in all i find it difficult to come up with anything negative about the resort, except for maybe the following......the bombardment of locals who interupted your beach sleeping time was very annoying, yes they were trying to get business by offering boat trips.jet skis etc but cocos really need to look at this problem, the beach isnt privately owned although it is normally very quiet due to it being at the end of a long stretch and you will normally only find cocos guests here (the odd person or 2 from jolly beach resort and sometimes a couple of locals appeared) and the beach beds are exclusively for cocos guests only, it was my opinion that if I wanted to book a jet ski, boat trip then I could quite easily approach the person selling that service and not have to constantly say 'no thank you' all day long to the various locals who would approach you throughout the day, the jet ski guy was probably the most persistant salesman i've ever met, i counted 4 times in one day when he approached my wife and I asking if i wanted to jet ski, that did get very annoying!! and i think that also due to the recent incident people were a little on edge and didnt want randomers approaching them all day long.

All in all...a fantastic resort, very basic yes....but for a real 'get away from it all' holiday/honeymoon then it was perfect, great staff, great food, great beach.great views.

Security does need looking at and improvements are being made at this time, if the weather is great then its a perfect relaxing holiday, if the weather isnt so good then i think boredom would be a major factor......but there is always shopping, sight seeing that can be done!!

We have just got back from our honeymoon.
We spent 2 wks at cocos and can honestly say it was the most memorable ever.
On arrival we were treated wonderfully(and with some rum punch!)
The room was amazing it was cleaned every day and the view was excellent.
The staff were the best ever even when they were under a lot of pressure with the press around they still did everything they could to make you feel as though you were still on holiday.
Special thanks to Tanesha, Jennifer and Carl !
The meals were lovely and everyone is catered for even if you want chips when they are not on the menu!
The hill upto the rooms is quite steep and as we were at the top we know all about that but I do not think this should put you off, just take everything with you for the day and only climb it when it is a bit cooler.
Obviously security has been tightened but even before then we felt secure, the beach vendors soon leave you alone when you tell them no.
Apart from Lyndon who is a great guy and hires out the jetski's this is definitely a must do!!
I highly recommend cocos if you are after romance, relaxation and a break from the real world its rustic charm is exactly what we wanted.

Paid a substantial amount for what was sold as 4/5 star resort hoping for a superb holiday. On arrival was disappointed with the approach along an unmade road, left to carry cases up a steep incline to be told by a rather surly receptionist that our accomodation wasn't ready. When we were escorted to the bungalow we found that it appeared to have only been finished as we waited,to one side the foundations for another bunglaow were apparent and to the other a half finished one was being built by a dozen or so builders. The bungalow was poorly furnished and the standard of building was poor. There was no interior shower and the outside shower was overlooked by other bungalows higher up.The view out to sea was fantastic however on looking down the view was one of a JCB digger, building materials and a rough, rubbish strewn building site.Workers were using a stand pipe attached to our bungalow and the curtain rail in the room fell off as we were speaking to the manager and hit my partner on the head.Fortunately no damage was done to the pole or my partner!
We spent the night without unpacking and were moved to what was in our view a lower standard of bungalow closer to reception. This was without air con and was poorly ventilated and furnished. The food at the hotel was average and the bar service and availability limited. The beach area was as mentionned in other reviews regularly visited by local men,one appeared to live on it and washed himself daily, fully clothed in the sea before smoking pot and exchanging abuse with the hotel staff member at the beach bar..great..top quality..overall we were extremely disappointed. At night I placed all the balcony furniture between the walkway from the footpath outside and our door. There was security near to the reception however I had little faith in their abilities or level of deterent towards local criminals. The only good points I can muster are the views which were lovely and the hotel compensated us with five days refund. Not much consolation for a spoiled holiday. I will certainly not be going back to the COCOS or possibly Antigua such was my disappointment.

We were very much looking forward to the idylic location but the weather was against us and the hotel was just not geared up for it. It rained every day for 2 weeks with a tropical storm to the point where the salt pans behind were overflowing so they used a digger to cut a huge channel through the beach to let the water out - not a pretty sight or smell. We had power outages and the floors were really slippery (one of our party fell quite badly). The rooms were flooded and the outdoor shower kind of lost its appeal as it would have been nice to have the option as detailed in the original brochure (we stayed in room 7). The bar service was terrible with no bar man but the food was pretty good. Obviously the current publicity has brought the holiday back to the forefront of my mind and one couple had their money and digital camera stolen from the small part of the beach even back then. In terms of Antigua itself, the taxi driver offered us drugs before we had even left the airport which kind of spoiled it. Nelson's dockyard was great though and we spent a lot of time there - well worth it.

My thoughts are with the families of the young couple who died there - it is a real tragedy.

We have just got back from cocos and did have a very good time but I do have to agree with some of the bad reviews, the bungalows are quite basic and tatty in parts and was not happy with the very flimsy doors in the bathroom and the doors leading onto the balcony and also the front doors, they only had slats of wood in which could easily be taken out, they closed only with a tiny little bolt and anyone could easily push them open, this was a great concern to us, we think proper doors with keys should be fitted and these old rickety doors taken off and replaced, also we feel the bungalows should all have individual alarms on so you can alarm them when you are asleep and also out of the bungalow. I think the owner needs to spend a lot of money on these bungalows, I never ever saw any security of a night either which was quite worrying. I would not advise you to go if you do not walk very well as you are very very isolated in some of the bungalows and so high. I took my mom and we asked for a bungalow near the bottom which we did have about 4 up but to be honest it was still a big struggle even to get up to that bit. The food was good but felt of an evening and lunchtime they tended to serve the people who were not stopping at cocos 1st but who just came for a meal and you had to wait for over an hour sometimes which was bad. Also the waitresses kept perstering us about tips saying give them to me individually as we never get them and we didnt need to hear that it is our choice if we choose to tip people the man who took the bags was the same too. Apart from this cocos is nice but for how much it costs money needs spending on the accomodation.
One last thing, beware of all the beach sellers they are a nuiscance and quite rude some of them if you do not buy and they keep coming all the while.
