My husband and I stayed here from 12/27 to 1/03 upon the recommendation of a friend. Loved the place and would recommend it to others.
It is useful to know that it is first a restaurant, and then a hotel. We were impressed with the food for the most part , both for flavor and presentation. The food served is of a chef and not a mass-production catering company. Like the size of the property, the size of the menu is small. Quality not quantity is the credo.
"Cocos Hotel and Restaurant" has only 19 hard wood cottages with such charming appeal. That it is a small resort lends a touch of casual sophistication. We had the cottage atop the hill with a wraparound balcony facing north and west. It had a little sitting area on the balcony and a hammock. Views of the Carribean Sea and sunset were amazing.
Yes the hill was steep but the daily climb is just about the only exercise you'll get as Cocos does not have exercise facilities.
So if you are looking for a hotel chain type of accomodation, with room service, phones, cable/TV, wakeup calls, elevators, airconditioners, whirlpool tubs, then you might be better off elsewhere.
They do have a minibar in the room, a fan and a hairdryer. Showers may be only outdoor or both outdoor/indoor. Mosquito nets add old world aesthetic appeal but are truly a necessity! A mini library with a small collection of books and a PC with internet access may be found down by the front office.
The beauty of Cocos is the way it transports you from the worries of work and city life. Just sit by the beach, order drinks from the bar, go kayaking or take up offers for jet skiing, island hops to Barbuda or canopy rides in the rainforest. Wait for lunch and dinner to be served with wine and delicious desserts. The beach in front of the property is very nice to the feet, its light turqouise waters does not get deep until several meters from the shore.
Our one main con for Cocos (or maybe the whole island for that matter!) is signage. We got there after dinner on a rented vehicle. Signage was practically non-existent as was adequate lighting! Maps were vague and just unreliable. We finally found the place but after a couple of missed turns and stops to ask the friendly locals for directions.
The other point against it is its rather obnoxious neighbor, Jolly Harbor Beach resort (think Florida Gulf shores resort condos) with its blasting music and party atmosphere in the evenings till about 11 or so I believe. Since we stayed on top of the hill, we might have had it better than those on lower ground. You might want to be on higher ground if you are a light sleeper.
In all, Cocos conjures up images of some rather well-off grandparents' island retreat. It has a weathered, old-world island charm with an air of very quiet sophistication.
