My wife and I spent 8 nights at Carlisle Bay between Feb. 27th and March 7th. We have previously stayed at Biras Creek in Virgin Gorda, Caneel Bay on St. John's and the Spice Beach resort in Grenada. I'd have to say that we enjoyed this resort more than the other 3. It is beautifully decorated with mature vegetation. There was a pianist in the main area each night.
We had a top floor ocean suite which must have measured 20 by 40 feet, plus a huge balcony.
Every meal was excellent. We had dinner on the jetty one night which was a real treat...full moon, champagne, candlelit, 5 course meal and an excellent wait person (Kevin C.)
On Friday evening they move some of the tables out from Indigo on the beach under a stand of palms. They have torches, candles and bonfires on the beach. They also had a very good steel band and absolutely the best buffet we've ever seen (lobster, shrimp, chicken, etc, etc.) Don't miss this!
Others have said the water is not that beautiful light blue color you see elsewhere. I agree. Looks to me as if a bit of sand gets churned up by the small waves and becomes suspended in the water. But it was calm and warm. No beach vendors at all.
For those who wonder, the electricity was 110 volts.
Excelent hair dryer. Coffee machine was touchy. Had to take it apart twice to empty the "full dredge basket" once I fugured out what that was (no instructions) and it wasn't even full. As usual, they never replenished the sugar, so you have to appropriate it from the restuarant. There was a pitcher for milk but no milk in the minibar. Guess I could have milked one of the local goats.
There is a mangrove swamp out back of the ocean suites so you can leave the louvers open in the separate toilet, shower and tub areas.
Satellite TV with lots of stations. You can probably have your local paper delivered every day (we got the Boston Globe...$3.50 a day!) They print them locally.
We had a package which included airport transfers, champagne and canapes in the room twice, dinner on the jetty, 2 spa treatments, one dinner in east and a boat ride with 2 great guys (Prince and Garfield) who gave us a wonderfull tour and took us to a deserted beach where they set up our picnic lunch replete with lounges, umbrella and all kinds of drinks. Montserrat is 20 miles offshore. Its pretty hazy, but you can see it and the volcano spewing ash.
There were lots of families with very small kids (the crying type), which is mostly OK, but many parents let the kids run all over the restaurant, etc.
The beach suites for families are separated from the ocean suites, but there was some spillover into ocean suites and occasional wanderers onto the ocean suites beach area. Indigo on the beach was a pretty kid-noisy dining experience, so if you want quiet, get room service. We like it quiet and many of the parents never even attempted to control the kids. That's a problem with the parents, not the resort but it was annoying.
We like a beach with lots of trees for shade and the area in front of the ocean suites was perfect. Beach staff sets up your lounge with towels, opens your umbrella and brings you cold water. During the day someone comes around with cold towels and sliced watermelon, melon and cantalope. You can order tea anywhere and have lunch on the beach if you desire.
Never used the bug spray and never got bitten by anything. I saw one fly and one mosquito in 8 days. There is usually enough of a breeze to prevent mosquitos from flying.
The not-so-good: The room cost $1140.00 per night (with this package) plus 20.5% tax and service charge. That's a lot of dough in and of itself, but the food is VERY expensive. Had 4 Cokes delivered to the room for $19.00. A hamburger was $24.00. One night my wife ordered a baby spinach salad and got an ice cream sized scoop of cooked spinach for $16.00!! A dinner will cost anywhere from $150.00 or so to over $200.00 for 2, so plan accordingly.
Taxis are very expensive. It cost $60.00 to go to Nelson's Dockyard/English Harbor. Don't waste your time.
Cost $36.00 to go to the Catholic church (for a 1 hour and 45 minute mass! Told our local priest and he said you could bury a pope in that amount of time!) Cost $54.00 to go to St. John for shopping on the quays where the cruise ships dock. We spent 3 hours there and my wife couldn't even find anyhting to buy (FIRST TIME FOR THAT!) 2 hours would have been more than enough.
Roads are horrible and there are no street signs. We usually rent a car, but not here.
I've read other reviews about long lines, etc. at the airport. It probably took us 10 minutes to check in, pay the $20.00 per person departure tax and go through security.
There was plenty of hot water. Electricity went out 3 times but came right back on.
Orders from room service came quickly, but they only checked the minibar once in 8 days (so we had to remove charges from the previous occupants) and they never came when called to retrieve the trays.
There are 2 computers for use in the library.
Overall, Carlisle Bay is beautiful and provided a truly wonderful experience. Truth be told, we've been to other resorts where children are not allowed in high season and for us, that's probably the way we'll go in the future.
