Writing this review on a rainy afternoon in my room at Carlisle Bay. This is the last day of my wife's "babymoon".
This is our first trip to Antigua as our planned trip to the FS/Nevis was sidetracked by Hurricane Omar and the closure of the FS until the first of the year. Overall, have to say we would have much preferred the FS Nevis.
Airport greeter in Antigua was very helpful and whisked us right into a nice taxi van for the 30 minute drive to the hotel. Driver was very professional if not particularly talkative.
Check in easy, we were given cold towels and a fruit drink on arrival. Manager came out and said hello. Walked to room by a front desk person who handled paper work in the room. Very seamless and well done.
The location of CB is a bit remote and you are rewarded for the remoteness with a lovely setting. Overall, the property is a bit small. The beach in the "adults" end of the resort is lovely with palm trees and nice chairs. Bay is very calm and swimming very nice with amazing sense of calm as you look towards Montserrat or back towards the Antiguan rain forest and hills.
Pool is inside the resort with no view of the ocean and as a result is not a desireable place to spend the day. Contrast this with most resorts that place the pool in the center of the property with a view of the ocean.
Best feature of the whole property is the room. We are in suite 105, a first floor unit steps from the beach. Giant room with step down living room with TV, phone, desk and great wireless internet. Sliding glass doors open to beach just steps away. Patio has nice sitting area and day bed for relaxing. For some odd reason no ceiling fan on the patio. Overall the room, bathroom, espresso maker, linens are 5 star quality on par with FS and Ritz.
Dining has been a bit of a dissapointment. Main restauraunt Indigo on the Beach has very spotty service and we waited many times for up to a half hour for the check, to order dessert, etc. Food was good but the prices were steep. East dinner was also good not great. Service much better. Food not quite as "inspired" as the website or menu suggest. One problem with remoteness of the resort is it is a chore to go off-property for dinner. The 20 minute each way bumpy ride was a deal breaker for my 7 month prego wife.
Wife enjoyed the spa. Again her treatment good, if not great. Men's locker room quite small with no steam room. Very nice workout room and equipment. Tennis facilities looked great. Pro shop and gift shop have woeful selections but lovely charming staff. For example, I wanted to buy a baseball hat for sun cover and could not find one in either shop.
Lobby entertainment good but rather boring. Piano with a sax player. Too blah for me. I want to hear acoustic guitar or steel drums when on vacation in the caribbean. Lobby is nice open feeling space.
Unlike some other reviewers, I found the staff to be quite pleasant if not real chatty. They seemed to try very hard to please and I pin most of the shortcomings in service on lack of supervision and training.
Overall my wife and I enjoyed our trip but will probably not be back.
