We were very disappointed with Carlisle Bay. The hotel website mentions a kids club but emphasises elegance and luxury, and the hotel brochure does not mention kids at ALL. Previous reviews mention that the kids and adults mix is not a problem at this hotel, so as a group of 4 adults we were expecting a relaxing "adult" time, but this was not the case.
First impressions were good with a friendly personal welcome, and our ocean suites were very large, but it soon became apparent that this was child heaven, ie lots of children under the age of 5 making loud noises at breakfast lunch and dinner, and splashing in the pool. We could not get away from them, apart from on the beach - but only sometimes IF we were lucky.
Other disappointing features:
1. The bathroom was decorated in a drab grey, reminiscent of an office toilet block (albeit a luxurious one). It was an open plan bathroom, ie no door from bedroom which wasn't a problem, but it was annoying that neither the shower door nor the toilet door shut properly and both left a two inch gap at the side because the shutting mechanism had broken. You had to bang the toilet door very hard about 4 times before it would close. I also felt that the shower grouting was a bit grubby and the towels had seen better days.
2. On arrival we dumped our bags and headed to the pool bar for a drink. It took a while and then the bar tender came back with a rum punch and a rum and coke when we'd asked for a rum punch and a beer! OK, mistakes can be made, but during our stay we were often brought the wrong order both with food and drinks.
3. The coffee machine in our room was superb, but they could have emptied the coffee dredges from the drain tray before they filled up and flooded.
4. Often we found drinks to be quite weak - on one occasion I actually went back to the bar to ask them to put some rum in my rum punch!
5. The main restaurant had a nice setting, but was spoiled by noisy kids, and the food was average. The alternative restaurant, East, had nice food but lacked atmosphere - it felt like tables had been set up in a conference room. No visuals for the walls - would have been nice to have Oriental themed pictures, or SOMETHING, on the walls. Likewise in the Pavillion next to the main restaurant there was a huge plain wall crying out for some tropical prints. I know it was supposed to be minimalist but there's a limit.
6. Evening entertainment - saxophonist or pianist in the bar next to the pool. NOthing around the main restaurant. Would have been nice to have a Caribbean band or something. There was a steel band on the SUnday night but we got the feeling this was only playing because there was a conference group staying that night.
7. The whole place seemed soulless - the staff were not very friendly and there didn't seem to be any opportunity to sit at the bar and meet other guests. You just sit at your own chairs and keep yourself to yourself.
8. Prices of food and drink were outrageous and the food was average and the drinks weak as mentioned before. One night we paid approx £175 Sterling equivalent for 4 of us and that was starter and main for 2 of us and main only for the other 2, with ONE bottle of wine between the four of us plus a bottle of water. £4 for a bottle of water, and £35 for a bottle of wine, and everything has 10% service charge plus 10.5% tax added to it, we felt very ripped off.
9. For the prices, food was NOT up to scratch. Breakfast was hit and miss. Asking for soft boiled eggs they arrived hard, so got them replaced and they were so runny they were undercooked - gave up! At dinner I ordered baked goats cheese and got a slice of toast topped with a slice of cold goats cheese spread - not the rinded melting goat cheese round (a la baked camberbert) it sounded like. They did take this off the bill when I complained, but I should think so too at around $15 plus tax and service!
10. The pool was a nice size with a "flooded" platform you could put your sunbeds on, but it was impossible to have a relaxing swim without some child screaming down your neck or bumping into you floating on a giant green blow up turtle.
And the seating area by the pool bar was mostly facing a blank concrete wall, again no atmosphere let alone a Caribbean atmosphere.
11. On a couple of occasions we came down the steps from our room to find empty glasses and crockery abandoned on the stairs - still there hours later.
Considering this hotel is marketed as a 5 star luxury relaxing resort it certainly did not live up to expectations. Might as well have gone to a 3 star in Spain! The only thing going for it in my opinion is the beach and the calm sea.
Unless you are a family with young children who don't mind mediocre food at ridiculous prices, don't mind eating at one restaurant only (unless you like eating Chinese several times a week), average service from miserable staff, don't want to mix with anyone else, and don't mind soulless surroundings then stay away. Carlisle Bay apparently opened as an adults only hotel but changed to a family resort, and I just don't think they have got it right. It doesn't feel like a family hotel and yet those guests seeking that sort of atmosphere will be disappointed by the number of aforementioned small kids. We were really expecting something a lot lot better.
I did mention my disappointment to one of the senior staff and she said she agreed with me on the children issue.
Please Carlisle Bay, for your own good, if you want to mix adults with children and still market the hotel as being relaxing and upmarket and romantic, and stay in business, put in a separate family restaurant, a separate children's pool, have a bit more lively evening entertainment (do you really want to listen to saxophone and piano in the Caribbean?!) and put some pictures on the walls for goodness sake! And cut the prices to match the standard of food, or get better chefs and less pretentiously described menus.
