“Luxury accommodation in idyllic location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

Having read the three existing reviews, it is difficult to add anything fresh; I would agree with all the comments therein. We had the most perfect week in Apartment 412, with the three bedrooms well suited to our two adult / two teenager / two 8-year-old family.
The apartment is every bit as stunning as other reviewers have indicated, particularly the huge balcony which served beautifully as our dining room. You really couldn't get a better setting.
Support from the owner's side (Ollie Thomas) was first rate and very friendly, his representative in Antigua (Pascale) could not have been more helpful, and the staff at the resort itself were all very welcoming and generally efficient.
I would echo the recommendation for a hire car. Nonsuch Bay is lovely but having a car opens up the island to you and there are so many great places to visit only half an hour's drive away.
We didn't sail (although the sailing is clearly excellent) but did take a boat from the resort for a half day's swimming and snorkelling at Green Island, which was a lovely spot. We also visited Half Moon Bay, Nelson's Dockyard, Shirley Heights, Stingray City, Valley Church Beach, Runaway Bay and St John's (lunch at Hemingway's), all of which were brilliant, so the car was a great success.
The beach at the resort was much nicer than I was expecting, given some comments in other Nonsuch Bay reviews. It is a bit weedy underfoot if you wade out but once you are swimming you don't notice it. It is very pretty, the water's clear, the swimming is sheltered and very safe, and the beach is clean. The three infinity pools were also all popular with the children.
August proved to be a great month to go. It was warm / hot, but there was a good breeze blowing all the time which kept it comfortable at all times. We had rain most days, but generally only for fifteen minutes or so and then it would brighten up again, so the rain was never a problem. Comparing the rates for August with peak season, I would say August is the time to go! It's true that some restaurants are shut, but we found many places at the cheap and cheerful end which provided a good mix with the fine dining available at the resort. For us a mixture of a few dinners in the resort restaurant, a few dinners self-catered on the fantastic balcony, and lunches around the island provided a good balance. The Epicurean in St John's is definitely the place to shop, very impressive establishment, but some planning is worthwhile: you don't want to be continually popping in and out of the resort given its rather dodgy long access road!
We really struggled to think of any improvements to the apartment, it was just so lovely. Possibly the comment about the light curtains is worth considering...nice to wake up with the sun (and we did go to bed early) but a lie-in with young children is probably unlikely.
All in all a fabulous holiday. We are all keen to return to No 412 if we get the chance.

“Wonderful stay at Nonsuch Bay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

We have just returned from a wonderful 3 night stay at Nonsuch Bay resort on route back from the USVI to the UK. We rented apartment 412 which had everything (and more) for our stay. The accomodation was exceptional - well appointed, clean, comfortable, spacious with upscale furnishings. The fantastic wrap around verandah was great for enjoying the view of the bay and just chilling during the day and in the evenings. Pascale, our property manager met us on our arrival and she had provided all the food items we had pre ordered for our arrival - we had been advised by the owner that there were no facilities at the resort for shopping. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking but we chose to eat out mostly. Pascale was excellent and spent time showing us around the apartment and nothing was too much trouble - she organised our pick up and transfers to and from the airport. The towels and beach towels were provided and bed linens were good quality. The cooling breezes at night meant we did not need to use the A/C and we slept comfortably with the french doors open with no appearance of mosquitos.
The restaurant at the resort was excellent with a good menu to choose from. We were staying out of season so getting a table was not a problem but reservations are needed. What was remarkable were the resort staff - restaurant, bar tenders, water sports crew -they were all so friendly and polite and took the time to get to know us even though we were only staying for a few days.
The water sports facilities were good at the resort and would be great for children and adults of all abilities - the sea breezes made for ideal sailing conditions in the bay. We took a trip to Green Island and enjoyed some good snorkelling and swimming in the clear water and had the beach almost to ourselves apart from some very friendly locals.
We don't usually stay at 'resort' settings however this was a great place as a stop over for us and all in all, we had an enjoyable and restful time and are planning our return next year with the grandchildren to share this beautiful place and wonderful people.

“Nonsuch Bay - A hidden Antiguan treasure!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012 for a stay in June 2012

Finding that perfect blend between a private villa and a full service Caribbean resort is a very difficult task and one our family had never been able to achieve until this two week holiday in Antigua.

My wife and I and our extended grown family spent two wonderful weeks enjoying a spacious, well furnished and quiet three bedroom apartment with a stupendous wrap around veranda overlooking Nonsuch Bay ... where we spent many hours soaking up the sun, breezes, and NO mosquitoes. Nonsuch Bay Resort (NBR) is hidden away on the south-eastern shore of the island and has to be one of the best kept secrets on Antigua. Simple elegance, wonderful cooling trade winds (which keeps the biting bugs away) and all the amenities of a full service resort with the ambience of a private villa… we couldn’t have ask for much more. What surprised us was that the apartment at NBR far surpassed what was posted in on-line reviews, pictures, and brochures.

On a value for money spent – definitely the best we have experienced in many years of visiting the islands.

A few items to highlight and note:

• What sets the apartment at NBR apart from so many other Caribbean resorts is the intimate elegance and atmosphere of a luxury retreat nestled in a in a world class resort. The apartment / NBR had multiple infinity pools, immaculately groomed grounds, Wi-Fi / cell / high speed internet service, and a friendly and engaging staff. Starting with Pascale who met us when we arrived and helped me navigate from the airport to Zoe and Therita who welcomed us every day in the reception area. Add to this a top drawer on premise restaurant with one of the top chefs in the Caribbean who has composed a thoughtful and responsive team of Charmaine, Paula, Keren and David. We were never disappointed whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner (albeit the dinner menu is limited). One very pleasant surprise were the options provided to our son-in-law who has a wheat/gluten/dairy allergy… the chef came up with wonderful options for each meal we enjoyed there – Hats off!

• We deliberately choose a two week window in late June and expected the island to be quiet but unlike the other islands, where it just slows down and many of the restaurants, galleries, and water sports business remain open, Antigua does not. On June 1 the countryside rolls up the sidewalks and shuts down for three months. While we missed having a variety of small local restaurants to discover and enjoy we had a fantastic alternative, a wonderfully equipped kitchen that provided us the opportunity to try our hand at cooking local recipes, snacking on local fruit (pineapples!!!), sipping cold wine and in the evenings watching glorious sunsets bathed in soft trade winds from the veranda.

• The sailing facility/marina is managed by dedicated and experienced mariners (thank you Leslie) whose patience with me has to be commended. Leslie, manager of the sailing facility, in addition to providing hands on sailing instruction arranged for us to rent a 19’ Boston Whaler from Paradise Boat Rentals and then provided me with a two hour orientation of the shoals, reefs, beaches, approach lanes, and currents all minutes from the dock and all inside the barrier reef that protects Nonsuch Bay. Paradise delivered and recovered the boat at NBR and it was anchored at the facility throughout our stay– this gave us the flexibility to spend time exploring different snorkeling opportunities, kite surfing and experiencing Green Island at our leisure. We spent several afternoons sailing “Elites” in the bay and “kite surfing” (not me) and even when the winds were light we all had a great time on the beautiful soft sandy beaches. Snorkeling was good even though the water was a bit cloudy at times.

• As we were going to be on the island for two weeks Pascal, offered to go to St John’s and pick up whatever we needed or if we were adventurous she would provide directions to visit Epicurean Fine Foods and Spirits in St John. We made the trip and it was worth it … fabulous store! We also discovered Crab Hole, a convenience store near English Harbor (15min) that served us well and had a good wine and spirits selection – VERY easy to get there. Although we did not stop at Island Provisioning a mile or so from the airport, as I was a bit preoccupied with learning to drive “British style”, it was recommended and was it is enroute to the resort.

Only Drawback – NBR is way out of the beaten path and I would recommend renting a car to explore the island. It is about 25 minutes from the airport, if you know how to navigate the roads. The last couple of miles are on a washboard gravel road but don’t be discouraged it is worth the drive! Pascale and Zoe recommended that when we were out we should pick up some of the locally grown bananas, sample the FANTASTIC “black” pineapples and savor the scrumptious avocados available from any of the roadside fruit stands… we did… many, many times!!!!

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being nirvana our stay at NBR would have to be a 9+. We will return … one of the best two weeks my wife and family have spent just relaxing and doing nothing.

“Need some R&R in the sun? Look no further - utter bliss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2011 for a stay in February 2011

We booked this at short notice after being recommended by a friend. The resort is such a well-kept secret that the taxi driver had a few problems finding it! As soon as we jumped out of the taxi we were greeted by very warm and friendly reception staff who promptly handed us an old Jamaican rum, sat us at a table looking over the sea and told us to relax whilst they took our cases to the apartment. Sensing that we were enjoying the rum very much, the resort staff promptly filled our glasses with strict instructions to relax!

Suitably relaxed, we were shown the apartment and wow what a surprise! Normally prepare myself to be disappointed when I first arrive as owners tend to have a habit of using photographs in their adverts that show things in a rather kind light. This however was not the case. The apartment is STUNNING! Beautiful wooden floors, tasteful decoration, luxury bedding and a wraparound balcony to die for. The kitchen is equipped with every appliance you could wish for, plus more. The beds are massive with cool white sheets (impeccably clean) and the bathrooms have double basins, walk in showers and are huge.

The wrap around balcony is a joy. It overlooks the resort and is very private with stunning views of the pools, beach and sea. Another plus is the part of the balcony outside the bedroom near to the kitchen, it was sheltered at all times from the sea breeze and we ate our breakfast here every morning. On a practical note, because of the privacy of the apartment, it only has very light, white curtains so if you wake with daylight it may be worth taking the eye mask off the flight with you! We however chose to be in bed relatively early and loved being woken by the sunrise at 6.30 every morning.

A real plus in the resort was the ability to charge meals and drinks to your room. We ate in the restaurant 3 times (twice in the evening and once at lunch). The food is amazing and seems to mix the traditional with the unusual extremely well. The lunchtime burger is also a must if you like a burger made from real steak! Typical cost of evening meal with drinks for 2 people was $70US. Make a point of getting to know Corallee who works in the bar; she has a laugh that is absolutely infectious! It is worth going to a supermarket on the way to the resort as it is relatively isolated and not served by public transport. We hired a car for 3 days and explored the island and took it as an opportunity to stock up on provisions.

The resort is built into a hillside and would be an issue for the less mobile as some of the roads and walkways are a bit steep. The pools, whilst not heated, were warm, clean and relatively deserted. The resort beach is fine and offers a wide selection of water sports (on several days we had it to ourselves!) but it is really worth hiring a car and visiting Half Moon Bay which is about a ten minute drive away.

The other beauty of this trip was the British Airways flight times; daytime flight out that was comfortable in economy and an evening flight back where we treated ourselves to premium economy. These flight times avoided any jet lag and we arrived home feeling utterly refreshed.

Rent this apartment if you want some rest and relaxation in utter luxury. Rent this apartment if you want to spend some private time with your friends or loved ones and want to get away from the world. Rent this apartment if you are happy to enjoy the sunshine and have relaxed evenings enjoying your favourite tipple with the knowledge that there is a cracking restaurant on site if you can be muster the energy to go out. I have stayed in top hotels around the world, but next time I want to chill; this is the place for me!
