Firstly a comment on the negative reviews -- what on earth did you expect ??? you are all entilted to your opinoins (as am I) and i frankly wonder if anything would ever please these people..... did you research the destination before booking ?????
As we were not only booking a holiday, but our wedding and honeymoon, we thourghly researched both the island and cocobay and i am pleased to report that we were not disapointed.....

OK rant over .. my honest report on Cocobay resort.

Upon arrival we were greeted by Phylis with a huge smile and 2 rum punches (lovely). The resort was explained ( booking dinner, beach towels, facilities etc.) and we were shown to our room while our cases were taken by a porter.

Accomodations
We had booked a seaview room and boy... we were amazed by the view, yes the rooms are quite close together but we never found this an issue. The room was as advertised, bed, safe, cabinet, toilet & shower ( what a view whilst showering) overhead fan (which took us a week to discover had 2 speeds) fridge, tea/coffee.Balcony with 2 chairs and a fabulous hammock.
We thought it was charming and exactly what we anticipated

Food
I won't go into detail as it is covered by many reports
Breakfast - Buffet ( plenty of choice)
Lunch - Buffet (plenty of choice)
Afterneen tea - Buffet (served at bar - sandwiches, cakes, cookies)
Dinner- Table de Hote' with 4 courses. NOTE - if you were not comfortable with the choices available the catering staff are more than happy to russle up something more to your taste at no cost (maybe it's the way you ask ?) and there are supplimentary dishes for a charge.
Wine is house red or white- we only had the white which was okay to our taste and were always offered re-fills before we were empty.
We found the staff attentive and speedy ( we were there for 12 days and could not fault them)
We never felt hungry and were told if we missed a meal, the kitchen staff would be happy to make us something outwith the normal meal times - one guest was unwell and missed breakfast and food was provided to take to his room. (at no cost)

Bar/Drinks
The drinks are NOT watered down, we had read the web site and were slightly apprehensive about the local produce on offer as part of the all inclusive deal - we should not have worried, the local beer (waddadli) is great and was free flowing (you should try the waddadli gold available in the shops.......).
There is a cocktail list serving many varieties (all are worth a try) which we found to be perfectly adequate. If you want something different then the bar staff will make it if they have suitable ingredients. The "slushy" machine which produces the frozen coconut etc (for pinicolada's etc) did run out quite often which was a minor bummer, but by that time we were happy to switch to alternatives ( i did point out to the management that i felt they under estimated the demand and would benefit from having more than 2 machine top up's available per day)
All the spirit bottles were opened from sealed and were opened and used in front of everyone, so if they are watered down ( which they are not) then it happens at the bottling plant- not the resort. As for the size of the plastic cups - so what- you can get a re-fill as often as you like. I spoke to people on excursions and I don't think many other places on Antigua serve tradidional pints except one bar in St. Johns.
The bar staff were friendly and attentive and on many occassions would re-fill your glass or place another drink when your back was turned so you didn't run dry.
Sometimes there was no-one serving for a short period when they were collecting glasses or re-stocking or were on a break , but it was not a major hassle - I don't think we had to wait more than 5 minutes for someone to appear, in fact although the bar is supposed to close at 11Pm one kindly sole showed us how to operate the beer pump before they left as they saw we were up for a long night (no names - but thank you)

Service
We are friendly outgoing people and were quick to smile and greet staff and also to say please and thank you - this may have something to do with the excellent service we received at all times. We found the staff to be friendly, sociable and efficient.
No complaints whatsoever - in fact nothing was too much trouble.

Activities
Included in the cost are snorkling, sunfish, hobbiecat, kyack which were all available most of the time.
If you want to book for external activities - no problem.
We went on several trips to St. Johns, eco tour etc but these were not part of the resort deal.
This place is all about relaxing, romance and chilling out and it certainly delivers on that score.

Due to the nature of this resort (no kids, no stag parties) the clientele we met were people with a similar attitude and we made some great friends and enjoyed good company.

Location
This resort is on the western leeward side of the island. The 4 easily accessable beaches are all beatiful with clear aqua blue caribbean water.
The beaches are public and on a Sunday the locals like to party which is great fun and not really intrusive. The beach vendors do not pester you if you give a polite "no thanks" and they will leave you alone thereafter.

Entertainment
Thursday - steel band - pretty good.(after managers cocktail party)

Thursday - Managers Cocktail Party - Bollocks - Just an excuse for the local diamond merchant to push their wares - not a hard sell but don't expect dinner before 8 PM.

Friday - Calypso Joe - no Bob Marley and slightly cheesey, but we thought he was ok.

Like I said, this place is for relaxation - not 24/7 partying - go somewhere else for that.

Don't believe the bad reviews!!!!!!
We have just come back from Cocobay and can't wait to go back.
We got married at cocobay and it was a wonderful experience.
Everything was taken care of and organised by Monique which made everything run smoothly

The staff are really friendly and couldn't be more helpful and Vincia was so full of smiles it was contagious.
David & J make a mean cocktail with extra flavour (RUM)
By the way they do not water down the drinks!!!!!!!!!!

The food was amazing.
Breakfast was a buffet, so eat as much as you want.
Lunchtime was a buffet so eat as much as you want.
sandwiches and cookies at 4pm then dinner at 6.30 - 9.30 with 4 courses.
We missed breakfast a few times but how much food can you eat in one day!!!!!!!

The accommodation was great and clean, everything you needed was there for you.
If you want a TV in your room and someone to wait on you hand and foot then go somewhere else
Cocobay is a peaceful paradise where you can take things at your own pace.

We met a great number of really genuine people and I can't recommend cocobay enough.

We had no problems with any members of staff, they were all friendly and helpful.
Maybe that's because we treated them the way we would want to be treated.

After booking with Expedia, I made a HUGE mistake and read the reviews....I thought I just ruined our honeymoon. Not even close. Word of warning; if you wanted to be waited on hand and foot....do go somewhere else. Most of the negatives on this site are people who expect this or did not bother reading the hotel description.
Room: Booked a seaview and WHAT A VIEW!!! The rooms have no A/C but you don't need it at night and if you stay in your room all day, go HOME and save yourself some money. Yes, the nature does find its way into your room and there is a mosquito net over the bed. News flash!! It's the tropics. Shower was open to the outside and private. We kept the doors open 24/7 and had no problem with bugs, bird, geckos, etc.
Food: Breakfast and lunch were buffet style. Dinner was by reservation which you made at reception on the way to breakfast. As for the amount of food, it's a BUFFET!! If you feel the need to stuff yourself, you are more than able. The selection at breakfast was pretty standard; bacon, sausage, muffins, bagles, fruit, cereal, etc. Lunch had more of a selection from day to day and was the most filling, I felt. Dinner was dress-up( resort wear after 7pm ) and was four courses with wine. You also had the option of ordering items that were not included on the all-inclusive menu. Of course, these were billed to the room. The resort even had afternoon tea, with finger sandwiches and cookies if you need something to tide you over until dinner.
Bar: What can I say..... the staff, especially Dave, took great care of us. Yes, it can be slow if the bartender steps away to get glasses, stock liquor, change the keg, etc. but we were always taken care of when our glasses were empty. Watch out....some drinks can get pretty stout, especially the rum punch, old-fashioned style.
Staff: Very attentive and polite, always with a smile. No problems at all with anyone. An inch of politeness and maybe some small talk with some of the staff about their day will take you miles. My wife decided she wanted to stay on the beach during lunch one day. Knowing she wouldn't make it until dinner, I asked if I could bring her plate to the beach. No problem and they even wrapped it in foil for me. We also got photos taken at sunset and the staff was more than eager to help make it happen.
Activites: Reception can set you up with a variety of excursions or you can set it up with some of the locals on the beach( you can bargain a bit ). Wadali circumnavigation cruise is a must. There are a variety of snorkeling, fishing, eco-tours, helicopter tours, and even land tours with some of the local drivers. This resort is geared for people who want to get out and about.
In conclusion, our honeymoon was the best vacation I have ever been on. Cocobay was a major reason. From the location to the helpful staff, it made for a memorable stay and made a few friends while we were there. Would definitely go back again.

DO NOT believe the negative reviews of this resort. Those people can never be pleased.

I was in Antigua on business with an associate who was visiting relatives so i was looking for a place to stay and chill out before commencing some work.
I booked this hotel for 3 nights at the last minite so here I was.
After a long flight and a long hold up at Antigua Int. I was looking forward to a sitting down and eating. My first impression with this resort is that it is an average no frills caribbean resort.
Rooms are different and I can see why other guest like this, the rooms are not 3*, but they are basically a room with a view, treat as such.
In the main area there was a wedding going on at the time so there were a few guests pottering around, but they seemed happy enough.
I sat down for my dinner and was served up the food that reminded me of the food I got on the plane, tiny, I was glad that I was not here with my family as I would of been worried. I was however happy with the service, they looked after me and treated me very well considering that I was on my own and there was lots of post wedding guests eating there as well. There are 3 tiers to the eating area, all with great veiws so no worries there. Not sure if it was because of the low season, but there was not many staff here at this resort , so as you can imagine the service may be slow.
Breakfast and lunch is buffet with enough choice for me, but I would be interested to see how bigger partys see it as there is not too much variety on both boards.
The resort has nice gardens and presents itself well and I can see why people have weddings here, I sat on the main beach during my stay and was pestered once, but a calm no and all is ok. Beach is next to the resort so it is easily accessible.
Bar is run completly by one man, David ?? , who I had a chat with and he did say that he has worked at many resorts in Antigua, and the main problem with Cocobay is guests complain about a)the food, and b)Too quiet, that has come from him.

Apologies for lack of detail, but I stayed here for three nights, I would not bring my family here as Cocobay does not have much to offer for what I would expect from a resort ,especially travelling four thousand miles I would want to make sure that it is worth it, here I would say no.

I would say if you are a couple, looking for some real peace and quiet ,no hassle,no noise or bongo drums, sit by the pool and drink and catch rays, this could be the place for you , I hand this a below average as I feel that they could give a bit more to the guests to experience a better holiday, not a terrible place, but not great either.

Take note : NO LUXURY HERE !!!

The lack of luxury here is shocking, the resort offers a bare minimum of everything including facilities, this is not the normal Caribbean resort that you may be used to. It is our fault that we were the fools that opted for a quiet non commerical place, and chose here. This place is so quiet and non entertaining that it made us depressed , this is the type of place that you expect to see people in for rehab (may as well be as the alcohol is so weak)
We got the impression that once they have your money that is all they care about. its a shame that the resort does not match the location, so much potential here with the views, we checked out of our sea view room, went elseware, and moved on.
