Firstly a comment on the negative reviews -- what on earth did you expect ??? you are all entilted to your opinoins (as am I) and i frankly wonder if anything would ever please these people..... did you research the destination before booking ?????
As we were not only booking a holiday, but our wedding and honeymoon, we thourghly researched both the island and cocobay and i am pleased to report that we were not disapointed.....
OK rant over .. my honest report on Cocobay resort.
Upon arrival we were greeted by Phylis with a huge smile and 2 rum punches (lovely). The resort was explained ( booking dinner, beach towels, facilities etc.) and we were shown to our room while our cases were taken by a porter.
Accomodations
We had booked a seaview room and boy... we were amazed by the view, yes the rooms are quite close together but we never found this an issue. The room was as advertised, bed, safe, cabinet, toilet & shower ( what a view whilst showering) overhead fan (which took us a week to discover had 2 speeds) fridge, tea/coffee.Balcony with 2 chairs and a fabulous hammock.
We thought it was charming and exactly what we anticipated
Food
I won't go into detail as it is covered by many reports
Breakfast - Buffet ( plenty of choice)
Lunch - Buffet (plenty of choice)
Afterneen tea - Buffet (served at bar - sandwiches, cakes, cookies)
Dinner- Table de Hote' with 4 courses. NOTE - if you were not comfortable with the choices available the catering staff are more than happy to russle up something more to your taste at no cost (maybe it's the way you ask ?) and there are supplimentary dishes for a charge.
Wine is house red or white- we only had the white which was okay to our taste and were always offered re-fills before we were empty.
We found the staff attentive and speedy ( we were there for 12 days and could not fault them)
We never felt hungry and were told if we missed a meal, the kitchen staff would be happy to make us something outwith the normal meal times - one guest was unwell and missed breakfast and food was provided to take to his room. (at no cost)
Bar/Drinks
The drinks are NOT watered down, we had read the web site and were slightly apprehensive about the local produce on offer as part of the all inclusive deal - we should not have worried, the local beer (waddadli) is great and was free flowing (you should try the waddadli gold available in the shops.......).
There is a cocktail list serving many varieties (all are worth a try) which we found to be perfectly adequate. If you want something different then the bar staff will make it if they have suitable ingredients. The "slushy" machine which produces the frozen coconut etc (for pinicolada's etc) did run out quite often which was a minor bummer, but by that time we were happy to switch to alternatives ( i did point out to the management that i felt they under estimated the demand and would benefit from having more than 2 machine top up's available per day)
All the spirit bottles were opened from sealed and were opened and used in front of everyone, so if they are watered down ( which they are not) then it happens at the bottling plant- not the resort. As for the size of the plastic cups - so what- you can get a re-fill as often as you like. I spoke to people on excursions and I don't think many other places on Antigua serve tradidional pints except one bar in St. Johns.
The bar staff were friendly and attentive and on many occassions would re-fill your glass or place another drink when your back was turned so you didn't run dry.
Sometimes there was no-one serving for a short period when they were collecting glasses or re-stocking or were on a break , but it was not a major hassle - I don't think we had to wait more than 5 minutes for someone to appear, in fact although the bar is supposed to close at 11Pm one kindly sole showed us how to operate the beer pump before they left as they saw we were up for a long night (no names - but thank you)
Service
We are friendly outgoing people and were quick to smile and greet staff and also to say please and thank you - this may have something to do with the excellent service we received at all times. We found the staff to be friendly, sociable and efficient.
No complaints whatsoever - in fact nothing was too much trouble.
Activities
Included in the cost are snorkling, sunfish, hobbiecat, kyack which were all available most of the time.
If you want to book for external activities - no problem.
We went on several trips to St. Johns, eco tour etc but these were not part of the resort deal.
This place is all about relaxing, romance and chilling out and it certainly delivers on that score.
Due to the nature of this resort (no kids, no stag parties) the clientele we met were people with a similar attitude and we made some great friends and enjoyed good company.
Location
This resort is on the western leeward side of the island. The 4 easily accessable beaches are all beatiful with clear aqua blue caribbean water.
The beaches are public and on a Sunday the locals like to party which is great fun and not really intrusive. The beach vendors do not pester you if you give a polite "no thanks" and they will leave you alone thereafter.
Entertainment
Thursday - steel band - pretty good.(after managers cocktail party)
Thursday - Managers Cocktail Party - Bollocks - Just an excuse for the local diamond merchant to push their wares - not a hard sell but don't expect dinner before 8 PM.
Friday - Calypso Joe - no Bob Marley and slightly cheesey, but we thought he was ok.
Like I said, this place is for relaxation - not 24/7 partying - go somewhere else for that.
