Okay - so here is the definitive review of the Grand Pineapple Beach Resort - all others can be ignored. It’s a little long-winded but I wanted to get all of my impressions in. We were there for 2 weeks starting Feb. 12th.
First, the perspective customer needs to realize there is a difference between a 5 star rating in the Caribbean compared to say, Monaco – they just aren’t the same.
I will start with our checkin since that was our first interaction. The rum punch at checkin was very much needed after a long flight and a very bumpy ‘taxi’ ride to the resort. The resort is small compared to any I’ve been to and this is first evident with their lobby – 2 small desks with overworked employees trying to get everyone checked in. We arrived just after noon and since checkin time isn't until 3:00PM our room was not ready so we were told to come back at that time but in the meantime we were free to explore the resort and take advantage of their buffet lunch and open bars. We had brought shorts etc in our carryon bags so we were able to get comfortable and enjoyed the afternoon. We went back at 3:00PM and our rooms were still not ready but by this time we had had a few rum punches so we just laughed along with the rest of the people waiting to get checked in and finely got to our room at 4:00PM
Our room was in the Oceanside building (500’s) on the first floor. I can’t speak about any other building but ours was obviously very old and the furniture was very old & tired – what we did have of furniture. We had a king size bed, two nightstands, a large dresser with a mirror and a TV and one small chair. We did not have any of the amenities advertised – fridge, coffee maker, ironing board or iron etc.) but I’m sure we could have gotten them if we complained but we spend so little time in the room they weren’t really and issue. Our TV didn’t work and it did take 3 trips to the lobby before we got a replacement but hey – it’s the Caribbean – what do you expect, they operate in Caribbean time. Room was always cleaned properly and towels were always there when we needed them. Maid was always friendly saying hi whenever we saw her.
Next – the meals. Food was average and is comparable to any other resort we’ve stayed at in the Caribbean – some nights better than others but overall there was a lot of variety so there was always something there to meet everybodies taste. It was a mix of buffet and a la carte for dinner and you had to book ahead of time but this was never a problem. Staff in the dining rooms were always very friendly, courteous, and responsive even though sometimes they were overworked. I always have a scotch on the rocks with my appetizer and after a few nights of this I didn’t even have to order – they would just automatically bring it – how’s that for service? The grill by the family pool was very good for a mid-day snack and the staff at the grill was top notch – especially Winsome – she was just great. The Outhouse – very nice short walk up but very much worth it – the chicken and ribs were awesome and the beer was always cold (the view wasn’t bad either). The Topaz was the best place to eat since its right on the beach and only 15 – 20 yards from the water – what a setting for enjoying breakfast & lunch. Speaking of breakfast – don’t miss the custom made omelets – they’re the best. Also, don’t leave your table with and food or beverages on it – the birds will help themselves. Some people seemed put off by the birds but if you leave a person at the table while you go to get something it really isn’t a problem. In fact there is an open air section in the middle of the dining room and you can often see birds splashing and playing in the rain cutters – very cute. The staff does put out a large tray of food at breakfast and lunch to draw the birds out of the dining room but it doesn’t keep them all out – how could you have a bad time watching birds during breakfast and lunch – loosen up – you’re on vacation.
Nightly entertainment – my only real complaint about the resort. It was boring, and repetitive from one week to the next. It almost looked as if the performers would rather be some place other than at the resort. There were a couple of nights where the music wasn’t too bad and on both those nights you would see the staff getting involved with the dancing and general good times. This is the first resort that I went to that the staff was so friendly and easy-going that they joined the guests in having fun – even the very stern faced lady who sat us down at dinner – didn’t get her name – but she could really let her hair down and have fun once the workload was finished. I would highly recommend going to Shirley’s Heights on Sunday night – very expensive, very crowded but a very good time. On Saturday night the resort had a steel drum band playing and when I found out there was going to be a steel drum band at Shirley’s Heights I was concerned about being bore for 3 hours but this was not the case. The steel drum band at the Height’s has 12 or 13 members and they rocked and once they were done another band came on playing more R&B / pop and they also rocked – I didn’t want to leave. Didn’t do the disco scene so I can’t comment on that but there weren’t a lot of people young enough to enjoy it so it was probably slow.
The pools – 2 pools, a family one and an adult one (quiet pool). Never saw too many people using the “quiet” pool – even had some times were it was completely empty, including the loungers. The family pool is where we spent some time but there weren’t very many kids so it really wasn’t a problem. Pools were nice and clean but small compared to other resorts we’ve stayed at.
The beach – what can I say – beautiful white sand beach with plenty of sun or shade (as you prefer) and never a shortage of loungers, here or at the pools. Snorkeling down at the end of the beach was okay but don’t expect to see any really colourful coral. There were some fish but not really a snorkeling paradise. We did talk with one couple who went out and saw a barracuda, a stingray and squid but theses sighting are not common.
Bars – Piano Bar was the best – the Aqua Bar was only staffed by one person and her premixed drinks weren’t as good as the ones at the Piano Bar. They have a list of specialty drinks listed and they are usually premixed for speed and I stuck with the Anguilla for my day time drinks – very tasty. Vera was awesome and even got to referring to me as Anguilla man but my favourite staff at the Piano Bar at night was Sheri-Lynn – she was awesome. Every night I didn’t even have to order – she had our drinks ready – she even went out of her way to put a few cherries in my wife’s drinks because she knew she liked them. Staff is overworked at this bar in the evening but was always ready when you needed them.
General overview – the resort is old and showing its age in some aspects but it is still my favourite Caribbean resort (to date). All of the others were huge complexes and lacked the personal touch compared to the Grand Pineapple. It is obvious that the resort is used to catering to British guests as well as a lot of repeat customers to the point where there is a special seating night for ‘repeaters’ and they all get a free t-shirt identifying them as repeaters. I spoke to some of the repeaters and all of them indicate that this may be their last trip to the resort since it has been sold to Sandals and they anticipate that it will change (and not for the best). The small size of the resort also allowed guests to meet and socialize more than larger resorts because you were always running in to them during the course of the day. The staff were mostly friendly and out-going (remember – you only get back what you put into it). If you take the time to chat and give the staff your name, they’ll remember you and smile and chat when they aren’t too busy. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone who likes the relaxed Caribbean way of doing things and who has a realistic view of their vacation.
Antigua – I found all ‘islanders’ pleasant and easy-going and you could strike up a conversation with almost everyone and have a great dialog. It sounds silly to say but I had the feeling that the people of Antigua were more ‘civilized’ then others islands we’ve been to and didn’t having feelings of dislike that you were on their island. I highly recommend going to Shirley’s Heights on Sunday night. We took 2 tours while in Antigua, a power catamaran trip around the island – extremely enjoyable – and an SUV ‘estate tour’ of the island – extremely enjoyable and our guide Markus was very informative and knowledgeable. A couple of hours shopping in St. John’s is more than enough time – any more than that would be overwhelming. Our ‘taxi’ driver dropped us at a shopping area that includes vendor stalls – don’t be surprised if there isn’t much haggling at the vendor stalls – it isn’t the same as some of the other islands, and picked us up at the same location 2.5 hours later.
I hope my review is useful and I don’t mind answering any questions from people thinking about going to Antigua. Sit back, enjoy, and bring home some awesome memories.
