Booked this resort through an airline staff discount agent in UK. Used my free first class tickets to travel and took my fiance for a trip to Paradise ( NOT )!!
Where to start?
Taxi trip from Airport - Driver shook his head when we told him to take us to the Grande Pineapple - asked us if we had paid all the money - advised us to go somewhere (anywhere) else - recommended 4 other resorts. The alarm bells started ringing!!
Check in staff hardly enthusiastic. Reception area very poor. Our room (Water front beach) was tiny, dark, dirty, and outdated. The bathroom stank of urine! Shower did not work properly (see other thread), bedding smelled. Some sort of local wildlife in room but never tracked it down as we checked out after only 14 hours! Flyscreen was hanging off room door so I was bitten four times by mozzies on first night. Electrical outlet hanging off wall in bathroom right next to sink and water!! Shower curtain tied up with toilet paper? Fiance did not sleep all night.
Restaurants appalling and food terrible. food areas not cleaned properly and loads of birds and flies. Asked for Coca Cola and was laughed out of bar area when I requested only tinned or bottled as opposed to the fountain. Dinner menu a joke. When we tried to leave without ordering the manager was called. He offered us a steak and chicken (not on menu) if we would wait . It turned out to be not worth the 15 minute wait, The steak was swimming in oil and tasted terrible, the chicken was overcooked and so dry my fiance choked on it. Internet facilities appalling and unavailable mostly.
Upon inspection of the resort and looking through the thin Caribbean veneer, It became clear that this was nothing more than an Antiguan Butlins camp. All complaints to reception staff were met with that same disinterested stare.
Several other guests present when I was complaining said they were satisfied with the place. With the greatest of respects, these people would have been happy with anything! Met several other guests considering checking out so obviously I was not alone. One American couple just returned from 5 star resort in Mexico thought they had arrived in Purgatory at the Pineapple.
Final straw was the advertised "Disco" at the bar at 11pm. This spoke volumes about the character of the resort and I started making urgent phone calls.
Final, final straw. When checking out, the staff tried to get me to fill in a form saying that I was leaving due to "personal circumstances". I promptly changed the wording on the form, signed it, and then photographed it for my own protection.
Got lucky and got a Junior Suite at "Curtain Bluff" and transferred there the very next day for less money than the Pineapple!!!
What a difference, this place is Paradise in comparison. The Bathroom alone is bigger than the entire room at the Pineapple, etc, etc, etc.
My advice? Give the Grande (thats a laugh) Pineapple a miss if you expect a resort that does Antigua Justice. Good points:- The beach is ok.
Best of luck. G.
