We stayed at PBR for 1 week from 4/16-4/23 in a waterfront room which is the 500 block of room numbers. I have been to 10 Islands in the Carribbean, plus several in Hawaii, Belize,Costa Rica and the south of France. I am only saying this to give you a perspective on where I am coming from. But my tastes are simple and the natural environment is what is most important to me. My review (as anyone's), is my opinion, so take it as you will.
We initially checked out the other beachfront location which I did not care for because the room was set way back on the beach infront of where everyone plays volleyball and congregates. The 500 block was private and literally 20 meters from the ocean with a picture window and private balcony on one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The room had at least a 20foot wood peaked ceiling with a ceiling fan at the top. The room was spotless and all the appliances in the bathroom were new. The beds were very comfortable. The room was not large, but accommodated us perfectly. The shower was large and worked great. The resort was planful and quaint by positioning almost everything around the magnificient beach. We were blessed with perfect weather the week we were there and the water was like a bathtub. We never had trouble getting towels or service. It did seem to be getting much busier on our last day, so maybe we were lucky on our week. The staff could not have been nicer, but from the moment I stepped onto the resort I greeted each one with a hello, a smile, and always used my manners. Why wouldn't I? I was thrilled to be in Antigua and I shared my enthusiasm with them. They could not do enough for us. They surprised us with a stocked refrigerator in our room without our asking. A staff member took us out on a Hobie Cat without our initiation. We sailed for as long as we wanted. Each time we saw the manager, he came up and greeted us and spent time engaged in conversation with us. Most of the food was very good for all inclusive. I was always able to find some things I liked. I especially liked the Italian night. The setting of the main restaurant was directly on the ocean. The bar service was quick and they had absolute vodka if you asked. The walk to Marys was beautiful. The security was all over the place and you entered the resort through a electronic gate with security in the gatehouse. It felt very safe for my 2 boys who had the run of the place and the staff gave them tons of attention. There was some activities for the kids but maybe because it was Easter week. One night they had a great 4 piece jazz band. The fire eater was something to see. We were out and about on a regular basis so I did not have time to tire of the resort. We did Eli's Eco tour which was great, bird island trip from the hotel and it was the best deal on the island and almost as long as Eli's, we went shopping in St. John, we had lunch at Harmony Hall and took the trip to Green Island. Harmony Hall was lovely with Italian opera playing in the background. The owner Roberto was very kind and gave my boys Harmony Hall ball caps after my one son stubbed his toe at Green Island. The lunch was special and the iced bottle of Pinot Grigio seemed to last for hours. The setting resembled the south of France. We spent a day touring Pigeon beach, shirley heights, Nelson's dockyard and falmouth and we had lunch at the beach restaurant on Galleon beach which was a stunning setting and great food. We spent a day on Turners beach and ended it at Russels at Ft. James. We stayed our 1st night at "Dickenson Bay Cottages which was very nice and spent a few hours hanging out on the beach, had dinner at a different Beach restaurant and Easter breakfast at the Trade Winds Hotel. The views were breattaking. We had a wonderful taxi driver who stayed with us the whole week who had an airconditioned van and 2 DVD screens with kid movies. And the most special were some of the great people we met who lived there. What could I say? We loved Antigua and hope to be back. If you want more info email me at rnh@columbus.rr.com
