Just returned from Grand Pineapple Beach after 2 weeks stay (31st March to 13th April) with wife and two daughters (5 & 3). We ended up at this resort at the last minute after our Cayman Islands holiday was cancelled with 10 days notice by Kuoni / Air Miles (boooo!) because the hotel was 6 months away from completion!!!!! BA holidays (hooray!) rescued us with this package.
Well, we fell on our feet. This resort is not the flashy, glitzy sophistication we have enjoyed as a couple in the Bahamas, Mexico etc but as a family resort all the better for it. The accomodation was clean and comfortable (we stayed in room 225, ground floor overlooking the beach with a patio). House keeping were excellent and we had no problems.
Breakfast is the best meal of the day, but lunch and dinner were fine as well with a childrens menu in the evening. Snacks were good, and Ice Cream was fantastic (try Peanut).
The staff everywhere were outstanding and made such a fuss of the kids.
Children also liked the resident tortoises and lizards.
The Beach was beautiful (white sand excellent for castle construction) , and at the far end by the Long Bay Hotel (which you can't see), the water is so calm and clear that the kids could wade out up to their knees and feed the fish with bread from breakfast / lunch, with the fish actually taking from your hand. There are only two hotels on this beach and the other (Long Bay) only has 25 rooms.
The pools aren't the huge free form pools of other resorts with swim up bars but were clean and plenty big enough for a fairly small resort.
The night time entertainment was fun but low key. This is a quiet resort along way from anywhere and as such is meant for quiet relaxation.
I took golf clubs with me and played once at the Cedar Valley golf club. On a positive note the staff and members were wonderful, however the course is not yet at the standard of Bahamas type resort golf (and is half the price). That said I finished 18 holes in two and a half hours and had a couple of very enjoyable hours watching the Cricket with the memebers in the outside bar which was entertainment in itself!
The best excursion, if you like that sort of thing, however is the fishing with Charles at water sports. The hotel has 3 x 24ft Carolina Skiffs, one of which is skippered by Charles who will take you fishing for the morning or afternooon (about 3.5 hours along with up to 5 others) for $33 US. They provide equipment (although take your own if you want top quality), bait and beer and the trip operates every morning and afternoon mon - fri. The fishing is bottom fishing in a network of reefs and sand banks in a huge lagoon just 5 minutes sailing from the hotel. The main quarry are small snapper (1lb being huge) but on three trips I saw lots of others. We caught alot of small "Jack" type fish of about 2-3lb's which are excellent sport on the very light spinning tackle. Skipper caught a "Virgin" Snapper weighing maybe 6lbs. Had a Jack bitten in half by a Barracuda (c. 20lbs) 3 feet from the boat, who then came back for the other half rigged to a small wire trace, but broke me. Charles reckons that Barracuda now has six of his hooks in him!. On my last trip we caught alot of snapper, but the highlight was having fish jumping all around the boat then to have a huge sea turtle break the surface chasing them. The turtle put the fishing off a bit but was well worth seeing. The fishing is all in 15 to 25 feet of water so bring light tackle (1.5 ounces of lead is fine as a sinker as virtually no tide), also bring size 1/0 or 2/0 hooks (if you use smaller hooks you will probably catch millions of v small fish) and some long wire traces. A 6 or 7 foot spinning rod with fixed spool reel is probably sufficient, but might be tempted to take a 12lb class 6ft boat rod and small multiplier to have a go at the barracuda.
There is also no restriction on fishing from the beach, although I did not try this (didn't bring my own rod). Fished on the boat with an Amercian called Bill who had caught several fish on a spinners at from the rocks at the end of the Beach. Saw locals fishing with fish baits from the sand with beach casting gear (evenings only). Snorkelling from the beach will reveal that there are plenty of fish up to about 5lbs so well worth a go. Snorkelling gear is free and good quality.
There were two hobie cats, sunfish and windsurfers for those that do this stuff. The water sports crew also took people to a reef further off shore in one of the skiffs for snorkelling (assume extra charge) for an hour at a time. The safety standards appear to be as stringent as Eurpoe with mandatory life vests, radios and flares on the boats, very modern equipment and well serviced engines.
We are now all thoroughly depressed at having to return home. We met several people at the resort that have returned year on year, British, American and Canadian. One couple had returned 9 years in a row!!
If you want a relaxed bucket and spade holiday in a beautiful friendly place then this is for you. If you want nightlife, parties, polished marble, roulette tables and London style dining then you probably won't be happy so spend twice the money and go elsewhere.
