Just come back. This place is full of character and, while slightly worn and in need of updating, it was certainly a nicer and more laid back place to stay than some of the more modern large mass-market hotels. A very colonial and intimate feel to it.

The beautiful soft white sand beach and turquoise water are its biggest selling points. It really is in a perfect location. Its gardens are beautiful too.

Stayed in a beachfront room in the 100s - the best thing (obviously) was the location and that it was kept spotlessly clean by the maid. Otherwise it really would benefit from updating, especially the bathroom, paintwork and air-con (which works well but is really noisy). I'm aware the Ocean View rooms are nicer and much newer (and cheaper) but we liked the location so much we didn't swap.

The fitness room is surprisingly good - cycles, stepper, running machines, lots of free and machine weights. Great view out over the sea. Not up to the standard of gyms back home but certainly much better than the ones we'd experienced at 5 star hotels in the Dom Rep. There are also 4 tennis courts that were always free when we wanted to play.

We found the food excellent. Sometimes the service was a bit slow - you can speed it up considerably by going later in the evening when the staff want to go home!

A word about Carlo of Antigua Scuba. My husband did the Advanced PADI course with him and found his tuition excellent. He's a little unconventional (delapidated van, wanders around shirtless and shoeless - just not what we were used to from a dive school) and we had problems getting hold of him to start with, but the hotel's tour desk helped and it was worth it in the end with my husband learning a lot from Carlo's vast experience.

Also worth noting that the hotel has its own desalination plant - some other hotels were apparently out of running water when we were there but you shouldn't get this problem at the Pineapple.

All in all a good choice for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful place, but probably not ideal for those who like it swish and luxurious.

I had a last minute at the Pinapple Beach with my wife and we had a ball, we've been all over the caribbean and this is one of the best!! Yes there are a few things that could be made better it is more or less a colonial sort of place , BUT!, its the caribbean! if you ask the manager like I did, or the chef's that you like your food a little differrent it was done Red and Tyson the cooks were outstanding and, the rest of the staff tried hard, the rooms were great and I must say that anyone who complains about this place cannot really have had spoken to the management, if they had a problem they were very accomodating and my wife and I will be going back next year!. great beach, drinks were good and food exellent, and Don't forget MARY'S!!!( part of the hotel). The place to be at midday, up on the mountain top, she's a great gal and part of the furniture, fantastic chicken and ribs not to be missed, and of course the visit to shirley heights, have fun and don't be afraid to ask if your not happy with anything, they are only human and want you to be happy!!!!

I have been on a few all-inclusive holidays before and have to say that the Grand Pineapple does not deserve a 4 star rating.

The food has awful and the main building was badly in need of updating.

Luckily, we upgraded to an ocean view room as the standard and garden rooms were decidedly Butllins circa 1950.

Overall the staff were nice, once you got to know them, however, the "no staws until 6pm" rule made it very hard to drink their insipid cocktails, and decanting cheap spirits into brand labelled bottles in full view of the paying guest is a bit off, to say the least. We stuck to the wine!

There were some good points, the pool was lovely and our ocean view room was what you would expect. The beach was also pretty clean and the Outhouse was very peaceful.

3/3 found this review helpful

To put into context what I am comparing this holiday with, we have previously visited Coco Reef in Tobago, Couples in Jamaica, Radisson in Bahamas, and Colony Club in Barbados.

All in all, we enjoyed a lovely, relaxing holiday at the Pineapple Beach and felt that for the money we paid (£1040 each for 10 days in an Ocean View room with Virgin), it was great value.

The plus points were as follow:

Beach
Amazing beach - probably the best we've had in the Caribbean. Sea slightly seaweedy in places, but patcjes you can swim over if like me you hate the feeling fo things around your feet!!

Food
Even in the main restaurant, the Topaz, dinner was A La Carte 5 nights a week which is a nice difference from the usual all inc. buffets.

The Italian restaurant was referred to as "gourmet" - I don't know that I'd go that far! With the waiters wearing Itailian football shirts, and menu offerings such as pasta or pork, I'd think of it more as a "Bella Pasta" type experience!

The pineapple Grill, which was a Tex Mex restaurant and the only one which was air conditioned, served very good food - although the interior of the restaurant could do with updating - it was comparable to a cheesy nightclub by day!

Bad Points

Rooms - be very careful about what you book! We had booked an Ocean View room, on the recommendation of reviews on this site, mentioning that they were in the new blocks. However, on our arrival we were placed in the one remaining old block of Ocean View rooms (block 600) - the room was old and worn, and the air conditioning which I can only assume had been installed at a later date, sounded like a full power electrical generator!! I believe the same is true of the garden view and beach front rooms.

We went straight back to reception and asked if we could swap to one of the newer ocean view rooms and were moved within 5 minutes - the difference was amazing!! Quite how these two rooms can be given the same category is beyond me! So, where possible, I would recomend going for an ocean view room in the 700, 800 or 900 blocks.

Entertainment

The entertainment was actually quite enjoyable - for the first time. However, their scehdule does not change from week to week so if you are staying for any longer than 7 days, you'll see the same fire eater, play the same quiz and sing with the same band twice!!

So all in all, a holiday which was great value for money. Don't go expecting the luxury and service you would find in other four or five stars and you will have a great time!

My partner and I have just returned from a lovely week at the Pineapple. We wanted a totally relaxing holiday - we didn't expect lots of activities (although there are plenty of watersports available) and entertainment , just a beautiful beach and the convenience of all-inclusive - exactly what the place offers. The food was pretty good - the breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. Sometimes the meals in the Topaz were average, but the bbqs and buffets were especially good. There are three restaurants for dinner so there is variety - something that all-inclusives can lack and you can snack all day if you want to. In all, we thought it was very good value - it's not an expensive resort so you can't expect total luxury. I can see why some people have commented on the service as some of the staff did look a bit fed up, but I think that is just their way and there is no point ruining your holiday worrying about it! Most of them were very friendly and cheerful. The rooms were very clean - ours was a beachfront in the 500 block so we opened our curtains and all we could see was the ocean, with a very private veranda. Basically, if you want a reasonably priced, relaxing, quiet holiday, it's a safe bet.
