April 2004. Had a WONDERFUL stay at the Pineapple.
The Beach: SPECTACULAR -- you never want to leave the 'warm bath' of the ocean off of Long Bay beach. Clear, warm and is every shade of turquoise imaginable. A short walk away is the barrier reef: great for wading and snorkelling (saw lots of exotic fish) -- but beware the rocks are very sharp and slippery.
Rooms: Beautiful beachfront room. Just like the pictures and exactly what we asked for -- steps from the beach and so close to the ocean that the last thing you heard as you go to sleep and first thing to hear as you wake up is the sound of the crashing surf! All that was needed to cool the room was the ceiling fan, although air conditioning was also available. The room was very clean and always a plentiful supply of towels. The reception staff were very firendly and attentive to any additional requests we had. If you want a private balcony though we'd recommend the 1st floor rooms on the 100 series, any rooms in the 200 series or the oceanfront 500 series. Also, on our way to the fitness centre we came upon the 300 series rooms -- the rooms have an incredible view of the ocean vista from high up the hill -- not sure if these are consdiered standard or gardenview rooms but definitly a room category I would look into -- seem very quiet and offering private balconies most likley at a lower cost than the beanchfront rooms.
Food: Great food. Much better than equivalently rated all-inclusives we've stayed at in St. Martin, Cuba and Bahamas. Only regular buffet was breakfast - but what a spread! an egg and waffle station and all the extra fixings from cereal, yogurt and succulent tropical fruit to panckaes, french toast, bacon and sausage. Lunch was either a la carte in the Topaz or ordered from the beach bar. We mainly ate at the Beach Bar -- not wanting to change out of our swimwear for lunch. Great burgers, pizza and hot dogs -- the Brownies for dessert are not to be missed!! Dinners were definitly plentiful -- ususally 4 courses (soup, appetizer, main, dessert) with 2-4 choices each -- nice extras: warmed bread and 'very hot plates' accompany each dinner meal. The Pineapple Grill was very good -- and romantic. The unbeatable feature about the Topaz and Chef Pietro's was definitly their location: beachfront -- apart from the food this was the best part abour dining in these 2 restaurants; the constant view and sound of the ocean. Chef Pietro's food was good too -- expecially the veal. Overall the desserts were yummy. Service was good - for the mostpart -- wait staff was friendly and attentive. However bit of confusion a couple of nights with restaurant reservations made at the tour desk -- we'd recommend that you check the reservatiopn ticket for the date and time and restaurant that you think you booked verbally -- may be different. Another great feature of the hotel is the bar service: never very busy so you were almost always served immediatly at the Piano or Aqua bar -- since there was no one else there. A nice change from having to nudge through a crowd to get beach bar service, as we've seen at other resorts.
Favorite places: Getting a piping hot and strong cappucino from the coffee machine at 6am (although the various types of coffees are self-serve here and available all day) and sitting to watch the sunrise from the beach, the hilltop gazebo or our balcony can't be beat!!
Activities and fitness: HobbyCat, Kayaks, Snorkeling, Beach Volleyball, water aerobics -- all available if you want them; lots of fun to participate. The fitness centre is at the top of a hill and is great -- new, modern building with air conditioning, piped in music, fresh towels and all the basic fitness equipment and free weights to keep you in shape. We didn't use the pools very much -- they were clean and nice but empty -- truly the best 'pool' was the ocean. However the view from the small pool near the Topaz offerd a nice view.
We would definitly return to the Pineapple and love to have a family reunion there.
