What can I say? We had a magical time at the Grand Pineapple Beach Resort. We wed atop the beautiful Hilltop Gazebo on a picture perfect day, playing our CD of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and couldn't have asked for more. From start to finish all was taken care of thanks to Novella the wedding coordinator. We luckily found a couple on these boards who were getting married a week ahead of us there, and the day we came in were being witnesses for another couple getting who were getting married. We met with them all, and in turn, asked that 2nd couple to be our witnesses for our wedding!!! How great is that!!!! Thanks so much to Terry and Lynne who put us in the path of Mick and Kay. Life is quite a magnificant ride.
We originally thought we wanted a 900 block room after reading reviews, but once we got there we asked to look at a room right on the oceanfront,,, room 514 which was simply GREAT!!!!! Yes the rooms are a little worn, but hey,,,,, it is the Caribbean,,,,, the rooms were quaint.... bright, and colorful....the salt water and sand are part of the ambiance...hehehe.... the location of our room was perfect in relation to the rest of the resort and hearing the waves and having the only extended deck in the 500 block was also a plus. We would spend early mornings drinking coffee and eating fruit and muffins on our balcony and dancing either on the balcony or up at "our" gazebo in the late afternoon for our "happy hour". (Novella even let us borrow the CD player on our 1 week anniversary so that we could dance to our wedding music) We miss it sooo much.... We met several people during our stay who were in all different category rooms and all had nothing bad to say.
As for the hotel offered water sports, we enjoyed the Hobie Cat rides a few times, (even after the mast broke our first time out and we had to be towed back in) the kayaking and the snorkeling,,,, all of which I have never done! We also went into St. John's, (we asked to be left on our own after we were brought into town to get our marriage paperwork done) We took the Excellence Boat Circumnavigation Tour which was really fun and beautiful. We also hired a taxi driver for 2 different days, once for our wedding afternoon/evening pictures and touring and another day we had planned out ahead which was fabulous! I got his name from these message boards. His name is Mervin Jackson and he even took time and researched what we wanted to do ahead of time and took us to all the places we requested and more. (including a 4 wheel drive up to the top of Boggy Peak the highest point on the island with his friend who works for the telephone company) We love to hike and we did some nice hikes at the Wallings Area and the Middle Ground Trail off of Pigeon Beach.
I can't comment on the outside nightlife as we stayed on site for their entertainment which was very good! Several local bands, piano/keyboard players, a steel pan band, a comedic magician, karaokee night and also a fire eating limbo dancer. We enjoyed all we saw. we stayed longer some nights than others depending how tired we were. We never made it to the disco.
Mary's Outhouse: That was a cool place! The chicken and ribs were great and reading all of the things people have left behind was fun. The view is so pretty and I got some nice sunset shots the last night we were there. Be sure to look for the 2 dogs that live up there and around the hilltop gazebo. We nicknamed them Pedro and Poochie! We found a wooden board to commemorate our wedding day at GPB and nailed it up on the right as you come in. Look for : Tom and Suzanne's Wedding Here 6/27/08 with a flower drawn on it.... Pocono's PA and thats us!
All in all, I truly beleive that every place has good and bad. If you look for the good, you will find it in every turn. I hope that everyone who goes to the GPB, has an amazing time like we did. Keep your mind open, and take it all in!
