We stayed at the Grand Pineapple in March'08, & having read the reviews since last August were unsure of what to expect, but we needn't have worried! I travelled there with my husband, son(14) & daughter(12) for our anual family holiday, & can only say that we had the most relaxing ,enjoyable holiday we have ever had.
Rooms - We had two garden view rooms, & although the bathrooms could do with updating , they were fine, everything worked including the air con & more importantly they were clean. Views of the garden were lovely, & we could see the sea beyond this. Not too far from the beach, pools or restaurants, but far enough away so as not to be noisy. The only unwelcome noise we had was from the guests staying above us, but luckily they weren't there for the whole of our stay, & they weren't too much of a problem.
Food - We thought the food on the whole was very good. Mary's outhouse is a legend in itself, we weren't so keen on the a la carte Mexican & Italian, but really enjoyed the breakfast, lunch & dinner buffetts which catered for all tastes. The Pelican Snack Bar also made excellent burgers.
Entertainment - We didn't make it to much of the evening entertainment the first week, due to jet lag, however we saw a couple of really good bands the second week of our stay, Our children really enjoyed the daytime activities organised by Jules & his team, be it volleyball, cricket, water polo, kayak racing to name but a few. There were also activities for younger children.
Staff - We found the staff really friendly & helpful, they really made a difference to our stay. My husband mentioned that he had a sore throat & was provided with honey & lemon. We saw another guest who had been sunburned being offered aloe vera to soothe his skin, nothing was ever too much trouble.
Location - The resort is really well laid out with the restaurant & pools being located right beside the beach. Some parts of the hotel could do with a revamp (I think I read somewhere that it's happening next autumn) but its certainly nothing to worry about & doesn't detract from your holiday. The beach itself is stunning with plenty of loungers & space. You need to hire a car or taxi if you want to travel outside of the hotel as it's in a more remote location, however having driven around the island ,all of the hotels seemed to be in the same situation. Drivings easy as you drive on the left hand side of the road, & you can reach the other side of the island in half an hour. We only ventured out for one day, as we were having such a good time at the hotel. The early morning walk to Devils Bridge organised by the hotel staff was worth it.
All in all, if you take all the good bits from the other reviews, ignor all the bad, go with an open mind & most importantly adopt a laid back Carribean attitude you'll have a great time. We would definately recommend this hotel , and can't wait to return.
