We spent one week at the Beachclub from Jan 15 to 22. Our room on the ground floor was excellent, everything we wanted. It was large, modern with a walkout to the beach and a private veranda with lounge chairs. The bathroom had a super size tub ( no jacuzzi ), included a hair dryer and my wife's hair curler worked fine with the electrical suppy. We are from Canada where 115 volts, 15 amps is the norm.
We felt that Coco's. the beach club bar, restaurant and pool, was our own private retreat. Although the restaurant was popular, there were very few guests using the pool and bar, even in the evenings. The beach was windy but we spent most of our time at the pool. There was a lot of construction going on beside the main pool, we tried it once for 15 minutes and decided to pass for the rest of the week. Very glad that no one else found out about the pool at Coco's. There is also a tiered pool just below Piccolo's but seating is limited. The two small pools that you can actually swim in, which I did, only has four lounges on each pool deck. This is an adults only pool, which could be a relief for some as there were a lot of kids at St. James.
If you like fish and pork, you will love the meals. I didn't see a lot of Alberta beef (didn't expect too), and the two nights that steak was on the menu, only once was it chewable. You can always get shell fish for a surcharge; no shrimp, crab or lobster unless you want to pay extra. The breakfasts were always great, no problems with the choices, lunches were a little tedious although you could always get a sandwich made for you. The soups were great. The restaurants all had meal times, so all inclusive did not mean 24 hour service, basically three hours per meal. The mystery meat hamburger and ground meat product hot-dogs were available at the Mamora Bay snack bar all day. Only two of the three restaurants are open for dinner each night on a rotating basis. The Piccolo is open every night and all the restaurants require a reservation for dinner. We liked the Dockside the best, great view and the meu choices seemed to be better there. On Saturday night I had the marlin in the Rainbow Garden and it was delicious, my best meal of the week. I'm trying to be objective and obviously my sense of taste may be different, overall the food was OK, but disappointing considering my expectations of the St. James Club.
Each evening you should search around for the best entertainment. Every night there was a good entertainer but not all the entertainers that night were good.
We found the employees to be extremely polite and personable. I think that what some may consider rudeness was really directness. The employees were there to provide service not to serve only you. I found their firm attitude and directness refreshing. They were not going to kiss up for a tip that seemed never to be offered. We always tipped a dollar each for our first drink of the day and never had any issues with our glasses being empty.
I have been loooking forward to visiting the St. James Club for many years (we travel infrequently, once every four or five years) and I enjoyed myself. I won't return but I'm glad I was there.
