We have just returned from our stay at the St. Jame's Club 6/10 - 17/2006. This will be a review that you can trust if you are planning a vacation here. First, the summer months are not the time to travel here, it has very little to do at night, and during the day, you have the so called beach. I say this because that is the biggest let down of all. The hotel is located on the Atlantic Ocean side which makes the beach dirty, cloudy, and very very windy which is not what you would expect when you visit an Caribbean Island. The bay side, where all of the non-motorized water sports are located is a hot, buggy, lake type water, with very little air. It is not something you would like to swim in. Pretty to look at, but that is about all. The beautiful beaches that you dream of when you book this type of vacation, can be found on the Caribbean side of the island. To get there, I would recommend renting a car if you are a large group. The taxi's are VERY EXPENSIVE it would have cost us about $12 a person to the capital city of St. John's or to area where the better beaches are located, like Miller's on the bay. My brave brother-in-law got his Antigua drivers license ($20) and drove on the left side of the very narrow street just like he was born there. We used our rental van to find places to stock up our kitchen in our villa. This is because the food at the hotel (if you don't book the meal plan) is also very very EXPENSIVE. The deli at the hotel has a small selection of food $7.50 for a 1/2 gallon of Milk, $8 for a small box of cereal, $8 for a bag of charcoal. Get the picture, it is a very costly vacation. We did have a small grill on our deck, so we had our own BBQ to save on the cost of dinner. Here is an example...$20 - $28 just for the main meal, $8 for soup, salad, or dessert each. $5 for a small cup of coffee. Buffet breakfast from $15 - $19 per person. The meal bargin of the week was a grill on the bay that served $6 hambergers or hotdogs with chips. Small cup of soda $2.50. Keep in mind a 18% ( 10% service 8% gov tax) is added to all bills. Suggestion buy bottle water and the on the go mixes to add to your water bottle. We did have a rain out day during our weeks stay, and were at a complete loss about what to do. The tour desk was not very helpful with suggestions to fill our day. At best, when it cleared we played a little ping pong and tennis. I also recommend a hidden parlor in the capital of St. John's which is a fun shopping area. This "Big Bannana Holding Co. Ltd." Pizza Restaurant was surprisingly good, despite the long wait. Look for it near the docks, or just ask around. Back to the hotel, I would like to state that everyone I spoke with at the hotel was very very friendly and a pleasure to deal with. Except for some of the wait staff at the restaurants. They were rude at best and hardly knew their craft as you had to ask several times to get some ketchup which would arrive a half and hour later. As for the rooms, we had a villa located in what they referr as the Village area near the deli and beauty shop. The villa was clean and beautiful with two levels; however, we had construction all around us which was not pleasant. The rest of my party stayed in the Premium ocean view rooms which were also very nice and in a better location closer to the main pool and front desk. Our best day there, was the catamaran tour we booked, where we snorkeled and had a BBQ lunch. Keep in mind when you leave the hotel for any tour, the transportation is on you which is very costly. To end this long but I hope helpful reveiw, it was a nice hotel, but it had to many things that we did not enjoy to ever wish to return.
