Just returned from the St. James Club and I must say I am not sure what some guests expect from an Island experience but rule one is know that on 99% of the Islands in the Caribbean the attitude is that of no problem MON meaning it will get done, you are on vaction so just relax.

You paid alot of money to be there and sometime things aren't perfect but unless you are spending upward of $10,000 for a getaway (and are a superstar or something) expect things could go wrong.

Now I personally loved the resort.

The staff was very help as I traveled with my 10 month old child and she had gotten an allergic reaction to a mosquito bite(s) and they staff was very accommodating and the nurse very helpful in getting my child the right medication.

We loved the food and my baby is picky but she ate everything we also enjoyed the food it was a great dining experience every night.

Our villa was very nice clean newly updated and accommodated our needs.

As I am a travel agent I was there for business and pleasure so I was able to see every room catagory and did not see and shabby or dull looking rooms. The beach club is also great.

The beach was great water temp good and as I think of it I want to be there now.

We were able to get off the resort without the child and she is also picky about her sitters and she was fine. The nanny was good with her and I felt comfortable leaving my child.

Definately take those negitive oppinions of the resort lightly as they are only oppinions as mine is as well but being in the travel business I would not reccommend a place to a client if it did not live up to my own standards.

We stayed at the hotel from 6th - 13th Jan and have not experienced such a bad 4/5 star hotel. We had no shower for 4 days, the staff were completely unhelpful and most pretty ignorant. The food was ok but expect to be ignored while waiting for a table. The accommodation was very basic - nothing had been updated from the 90's. We moved rooms eventually but the new one smelt of the pool's restrooms situated below.
All in all, a terrible experience - avoid at all costs.

we booked to stay at ST james from 4th to 14th Jan for 10 nights, we only stayed 5! i have to say i was extremely dissapointed with this hotel.
firstly i have to add we travelled as a couple and not a family, and this resort is more aimed at familes however i know of a few families that were not happy either.
With exception to the ladies on Guest services, the staff were miserable and this is not want you want when your on holiday. the beaches were not great (cocos was better), the beaches in Antigua are beautiful and St james are the worst. Mamory Bay was very calm (good for kids) but was more like a lake and was slushy under foot this was not the white beautiful beaches you expect in Antigua.
the food was very bad, the best was the Docksider which did have a nice ambience however the food was not that good.
i would not advise to stay at ST James i do not know how they have such a good name.... we moved to Galley Bay (sister hotel to ST James) and this hotel was amazing true paradise!

We stayed at St James in Dec & though we enjoyed the resort our wedding there tarnished our stay. If you are planing to get married here you should be made aware that the Gazebo they have on their website has building work going on around it so you cannot use it.They suggest that you get married on the end of the jetty which most people did but we opted for a more secluded area as we did not want to get married in front of a beach full of people.A number of other things went wrong for instance they did not decorate the site as they agreed to, our cake dissapeared after we had our photos taken(we never saw it again)& other bits & pieces which idividually don't matter but collectively make for a v.dissapointing wedding. Worst of all we still havent got our marriage certificate. They ommitted to inform us that the one we got on the day is not the legal cert. we needed to order it! Nice resort - dissapointing wedding.

Not a true "family" resort

After researching many "family" resorts - we chose St.James's Club in Antigua ... with the expectation that this resort caters to toddlers (we have a 2 year old).

If you are planning on bringing a toddler - honestly, spend the money on a different resort (this is costly and there are many other better options to choose). If you are planning a romantic get-a-way - this is a great resort.

What do you need to ensure your toddler and YOU are going to enjoy yourselves?

1) Walk-in pool (so you are not worried that your toddler will jump/fall in, be too scared to play in the water without you there by his/her side -- there is no walk-in ( my fault, they did not advertise that they did). The resort advertises a "Kids Pool -- but it is a secluded pool 4-5 feet deep.

2) Play ground of some sort (to entertain the little ones other than spending time on the beach) -- they advertise this - but what they have is a fenced in portion of their Kids Club with sand and a few sand toys -- no swings, slides, etc. And in order for your child to be able to spend time (unsupervised by you) at the Kids Club -- they need to be fully potty trained (although they claim Kids Club from 2 years old ... not sure how many toddlers are fully potty independent by two)

3) Kids Meal -- which they had -- and it was fantatsic!

Also --- It is not "truely" all inclusive -- for example if you want "Shrimp" with your steak, or some speciality menu items -- there are additional costs. There is one restaurant on the resort that is not included in the All Inclusive package ( the one true fine dining restaurant on the resort) -- but the other restaurants do have good food.

This is an honest review and I hope it helps those planning on vacationing here - whether for a family vacation or a romantic get-a-way.
