Most of the bad reviews re this hotel have been written by American vistors who perhaps have higher expectations than the British. To put this into context I did overhear one American tourist complaining at a high qulaity resort in Barbados that it simply could not be a 5 star resort because they had to make their own toast. The fact that this meant the toast was fresh seemed to be lost on the guest in question. This attitude probably explains why it was difficult to get a space at the bar at The St James because a number of the American visitors took up more than one seat.
Aside of this the service is excellent and the food was very good. The room we were allocted initially was a little run down (in the 170 series) but we were changed within 15 minutes of arrival with no questions asked. A number of the rooms seemed to be getting upgraded and the facade undergoing a degree of rennovation (decorating etc). That said all of the rooms seemed to have decent and modern air conitioning which was not obtrusive which is a common complaint of a number of hotels. They are all of a decent size and have good sized bathrooms.
The sports facilities are very good and very well maintained and there is a good supply of watersports. The staff seeemd to be very attentive which directly contradicts a number of other reviews on this site.
Dress code is described as 'elegantly casual' which to most guests implies long trousers and a shirt with a collar. This can be a pain in the proverbial given the climate in the Carribean but the main evening bar is well air conditioned and it is therefore very comfortable. This can be an issue with other Carribean resorts but is not here. Drinks on the all inclusive package include all of the brands such as Stollys and Tanqueray although you have to ask directly for these to avoid being served with those that were distilled by Mrs Miggins from St Johns. Having said that the local brands are fine all be it served in large measures which it is difficult to raise objection to.
The resort seems well geared up for Children. Dinner starts early and there are baby listeners provided for those who chose to leave their children sleeping in the room. The Mamora beach (one of two on the resort) is sandy and shelves very gently allowing parents to watch the children in the water and it was always (despite the weather) very calm. Kids also have their own Club and their own menu which allows them to eat the things they like all of the time.
All in all this is an excellent resort for almost everyone.
