My wife and I have just returned from a 10 day stay at St. James's Club. The resort is well maintained with mature gardens, although we were told by timeshare owners that the beaches had been cleaner on previous visits. Our groundfloor beachfront room had a verandah with steps down to the sand and we could lie in bed in the morning and see the sea and palm trees, excellent. The room was well equipped and comfortable: aircon, ceiling fan, TV (mainly American channels but who comes to Antigua to watch TV), large bathroom, fridge, filter coffee machine on a small worktop with sink.
We enjoyed dining in the different restaurants, Picolo Mondo being our favourite: as Docksiders was closed for refurbishment there was no supplement there ( normally $35) The Jacandra bar was pleasant for after dinner drinks. Most evenings there was entertainment which varied in quality but mostly good; I think we know all the words of "No Woman, No crime" now!
A nice touch was the buggy that came along the beaches bearing cold drinks.
The majority of the staff were helpful, if we were friendly they would respond likewise. Most evenings the Deputy Manager would tour the Hotel talking to guests and welcomed feedback; my wife mentioned the potholes in the approach road and the following day they were repaired, coincidence I'm sure!
Coco beach caught the prevailing breeze so tended to be cooler than Mamora which was more sheltered, nice to have a choice.
A word of warning for guests at the Virgin Beach Club: although Virgin use the same accommodation dining and drinking opportunities are limited, so read the brochure carefully.
I recommend you hire a car and explore Antigua, the roads our mostly good, watch out for potholes and the maps are poor but we found all the places we set off for. The car hire office in Reception seemed to offer the same prices as off-site companies and was convenient.
We were invited to a timeshare presentation, took less than 30 mins, no hard sell and you get a shopping voucher for $100 or a trip on a yacht, plus a beach bag if you arrive on time.
Be prepared for long waits at the small airport: it took 90 mins to clear Immigration and Customs inbound, nearly 400 people on a 747 was not what the airport was designed for. Outbound was not much better, 60 mins for Emmigration and Security, at least we had checked in earlier at the hotel using Virgin's Chill out service. If you are not on a Virgin holiday ask the rep for the form a couple of days before you leave.
All in all we had a lovely holiday and are likely to return.
