My wife and I have just returned from a 10 day stay at St. James's Club. The resort is well maintained with mature gardens, although we were told by timeshare owners that the beaches had been cleaner on previous visits. Our groundfloor beachfront room had a verandah with steps down to the sand and we could lie in bed in the morning and see the sea and palm trees, excellent. The room was well equipped and comfortable: aircon, ceiling fan, TV (mainly American channels but who comes to Antigua to watch TV), large bathroom, fridge, filter coffee machine on a small worktop with sink.
We enjoyed dining in the different restaurants, Picolo Mondo being our favourite: as Docksiders was closed for refurbishment there was no supplement there ( normally $35) The Jacandra bar was pleasant for after dinner drinks. Most evenings there was entertainment which varied in quality but mostly good; I think we know all the words of "No Woman, No crime" now!
A nice touch was the buggy that came along the beaches bearing cold drinks.
The majority of the staff were helpful, if we were friendly they would respond likewise. Most evenings the Deputy Manager would tour the Hotel talking to guests and welcomed feedback; my wife mentioned the potholes in the approach road and the following day they were repaired, coincidence I'm sure!
Coco beach caught the prevailing breeze so tended to be cooler than Mamora which was more sheltered, nice to have a choice.
A word of warning for guests at the Virgin Beach Club: although Virgin use the same accommodation dining and drinking opportunities are limited, so read the brochure carefully.
I recommend you hire a car and explore Antigua, the roads our mostly good, watch out for potholes and the maps are poor but we found all the places we set off for. The car hire office in Reception seemed to offer the same prices as off-site companies and was convenient.
We were invited to a timeshare presentation, took less than 30 mins, no hard sell and you get a shopping voucher for $100 or a trip on a yacht, plus a beach bag if you arrive on time.
Be prepared for long waits at the small airport: it took 90 mins to clear Immigration and Customs inbound, nearly 400 people on a 747 was not what the airport was designed for. Outbound was not much better, 60 mins for Emmigration and Security, at least we had checked in earlier at the hotel using Virgin's Chill out service. If you are not on a Virgin holiday ask the rep for the form a couple of days before you leave.
All in all we had a lovely holiday and are likely to return.

We stayed here for a fortnight last summer & seeing it at a late offer bargain price for October half term returned for another week at the end of October 08. The hotel is a seperate area operated by Virgin (mainly for UK guests) within the St James Club complex of hotel & villas. This gives you the advantage of using the larger hotels facilities such as pools, gym (& restaurants to a limited degree) but with the imtimacy of a smaller beach resort. All Beach Club rooms are huge, last time we upgraded to a premium first floor room with direct access to the beach...it really is a "wow" moment when you first walk in, this time we didn't pay extra & the room was still above expectation...just on the second floor. Plenty of space, including satellite TV, fridge & large bathroom with double sinks.

There are two beaches, The Beach Club rooms face onto the Atlantic side with a great cooling breeze & plenty of sunbeds. By mid afternoon this loses some of its sun & we'd move across the road to another beach on the calmer mamora bay which I found too hot in the midday sun but great as the day cools down again. A small drinks buggy covers both beaches offering beers & soft drinks during the day (& is included in the price)

There are several pools around the resort, we'd come off the Atlantic Beach and use Cocos pool with the bar directly above for a drink afterwards to take back on the beach

No complaints with food, not the same choice of restaurants as, say Sandals (but not the same price either!) Breakfast (buffet) & Lunch (Small A la Carte menu or Buffet) were in Cocos restaurant & Dinner was also usually there (alternative nights offered Buffet or A La Carte) For a change you can eat at Rainbow Garden-the main St James restaurant on Monday & usually a BBQ on Thursday at another St James restaurant, Docksider (although this was moved to Cocos this time due to building works) Virgin also give you a voucher to dine at Piccolo Mondo - Italian fine dining restaurant (there is usually a $35 charge per person for this restaurant) excellent food everywhere with plenty of choice.

We just chilled this time but last visit did the Excellence catamaran cruise around the island which was a fantastic trip for about $100 per person for the full day including all food, drink & snorkelling (snorkelling not great but OK-everything else great)

There are some great deals around at the moment for this hotel, we paid just over £700 each for a weeks all inclusive & at anything like that price it totally lived upto expectations & would definately recommend it for great rooms & views, good food & a "real" caribbean experience.

Have returned this week from staying at The Beach Club at St James, Antigua. There were 19 of us and my daughter got married whilst we were out there. The staff ensured everything was perfect and organised all details wonderfully.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and thought it great value for money. The superior rooms open directly onto the beach, but the standard rooms (above) were spacious and some had 2/3 washbasins/
kitchen area which was useful. Would definitely return and try to book a standard room.

We did not find a problem with seaweed, its only dark stalks and was mostly cleared every morning. We ate in Cocos restaurant most of the time (The Docksider restaurant is currently closed). The staff were mostly friendly and helpful - the manager from New York was very welcoming and friendly (after our 9 hour flight delay). The boat hire staff went out of their way to help us and had to rescue some of our party on a couple of occasions!! Would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a relaxed holiday in beautiful surroundings.

I had the pleasure of staying at St. James' Club- part work, part holiday in August. It was a most memorable experience!!! The staff were always warm and welcoming, especially the room attendants and the dining room staff. I distinctly remember Audrey, a bar waitress, who made all the guests feel special, perhaps it was because she remembered all our names!!!!

The room that I had was also quite big with a beuatiful view of the ocean!! Unbeatable!! Tres magnifique!!! I also enjoyed the choice of dining experiences from Cocos with its open verandahs, to Dockside which was oh so romantic. Piccolos is also a MUST DINE. The service there was GREAT and the food was TASTY! Elaine and her staff are simply the best at making the diners feel welcome but not being too instrusive.

There was also quite a lot to see and do at SJC. I loved going for those early morning jogs, and late afternoon swims....and not feeling a bit unsafe. Did some island tours which gave the vacation part of my stay some variety. The ladies at the tour desk are great at getting the best deals!

I would recommend St. James Club for anyone wanting to experience great service and Caribbean hospitality!!

Stayed here with work in October 2008. We stayed on a room only basis, which was amazingly cheap at the moment - check out the online offers.

The hotel was great. Great sized rooms. Two queen size beds. All rooms in the hotel have a view of the ocean in some shape or form. Nice pool area. Two beaches - one on the Atlantic side, with breezes, and one on Mamora bay - very sheltered and quiet.

Staff were very pleasant.

We had breakfast at the hotel (which was extra on room only basis), but great. Lots of variety and good quality.

Dinner wasn't such good value if not on all inclusive. Expensive for what you get. I would suggest heading in to English Harbour area. Would recommend checking out a couple of places - Mad Mongoose is a bar with great food and live music on a Friday. Cloggy's also has great food. And of course Sunday night BBQ at Shirleys Heights. It probably helps if you have a car if you are going to do room only and go out for food, but there are taxis on site. You can't walk anywhere - you're at the end of the earth! (A good thing).

There is some work going on at the hotel at the moment. This can be a little disturbing on the bay beach - but not if you have an iPod. You don't notice it at all around the pool area. However for the price we paid it's an easy trade-off.

All in all great value. Can't comment on the all inclusive, but room-
only rate was a bargain.
