My brother and I stayed at SJC the first week (dec 9 - 16/97) of a two week vacation to Antigua. We chose the island and SJC as a last minute getaway when our villa rental in the BVI's fell through. We have done a number of all inclusives in the Caribbean, so had certain expectations since the resort was rated a 4+. SJC is the largest resort on Antigua, so we felt it's 4+ rating would suit our expectations. We had a true beachside room on the Atlantic shore. Our trip coincided with the remnants of Hurricane Olga and subsequent squalls and surf. We did get to see rain fall horizontally, but this lasted for 15 minutes at most, during the day. The beach and sand itself are fantastic, however, we never went into the ocean on the Atlantic side as the bottom was rocky and with the waves, very treacherous to walk in. The constant breeze off of the Atlantic kept the mosquitos at bay. The beach on the Mamora bay side is very calm, with a sandy bottom and the wind is miminal. Most people sat on the bay beach because of the unseasonable wind. The beach side rooms are standard "motel" style and the buildings are wood frame. This means that if you are on the lower floor, you hear every footstep and furniture movement above you - too noisy. We couldn't enjoy the breeze off of the Atlantic because the bathroom window lacked a screen and the beach door screen was broken. So, instead of listening to the calming sound of the surf and breeze, we had to make a choice of either mosquito bites or the roar of the air conditioning. We cannot understand why simple repairs as screens and slow drains cannot be attended to without the guest bringing it to management's attention. Our resort experience has taught us that dwelling on, or complaining about, the deficiencies of the place can ruin a one week vacation. If there are alternatives, in this case the AC, then we keep quiet, knowing we will never return- we know thare are better places to be discovered. The resort would save money if guests could leave their windows open for ventilation rather than relying on the AC, plus the rooms would smell fresher. The rooms were well cleaned on a daily basis and have fridges and coffee makers. The fridge is not stocked. Bottled water, beer and soda is extra. In Cuba and Mexico, our fridges always had bottled water, beer and cans of soda pop. We never did see the complimentary bathrobes (advertised in the brochure). There are 4 restaurants on the property, and enough selection, if there for a week, to suit every appetite. Having traveled to other All Inclusives, we still don't understand the extra charge ($35 USD) for a lobster dinner. It's not like Antigua doesn't have native lobster. All other AI's we have stayed at allowed for at least one "deluxe" meal during a week stay (Cuba, every night if space available - we were never declined). No bottled beer (extra charge), only draft - another first for us. Antigua was the most expensive of the AI's we have stayed at, yet had the least comprehensive meal and beverage service. Another first for us was the constant request for our room number everytime we ordered a beverage or food service. Wrist bands would be a far better solution than constantly making us feel that we were invisible and unimportant when the same server asked for our room number several times during the evening. The plus for the meal service is that the restaurants are all open air and all have a view. The extra charge restaurant, Picolo Mondo, is located up a hill overlooking Marmora bay and does have a fantastic view. The meal there was okay, but we felt cheated because of the extra charge- a steak and lobster dinner in Toronto, under the same conditions would not cost an additional $35USD over the daily food charge already levied. Some of the staff were "out of their way" friendly (Prince, at reception) while others made us question the criteria the resort has for hiring staff. We found we were invisible to the beach snack bar staff until exactly 10 a.m. How much trouble is it to pour a glass of coke at 9:55 a.m. or at least say "give me a few minutes, rather than a flat "not open"? It's rude, and we felt embarrassed to just stand there while they sat waiting for 10. There are plenty of lounge chairs and a good towel service. We never used the pools (we came for the sand and surf) but they appeared to be well maintained. We met many friendly and fun Brits who have been coming to SJC for many years (are we missing something?) and they gave that extra "zip" to our stay. Most Americans and fellow Canadians we spoke to said that they would not come back, as there were many more places to discover, and they found that the resort lacked value for their money - we did, too. The island is very historic in terms of British Naval history and we recommend doing both the land and water island tour. We did the Excel power boat tour because the maximum number of people is only 14 (more personal) and the speed with which we travelled allowed for 2 extra stops for snorkelling and body surfing that the larger catamaran tours couldn't do, plus, we had a very leisure beach picnic on a private island. Antigua is a very beautiful island with a lot to explore, if so inclined. There were a few places outside the resort that we explored on foot, but SJC is also okay if you just want to lay in the sun or the shade a read a good book. Would we go back to SJC? No. We have had far better AI experiences/hotel amenities (Cuba, Mexico) for 2/3 the price. For the most part, the hotel staff didn't make us feel that they appreciated the fact that we chose their facility over others. We are not demanding customers and did not complain about our experience - builds resentment and ruins the vacation. But common civility and hospitality is expected when we have paid for it. The staff treated us more like we were at a summer camp than on a carefully budgeted vacation. We don't understand the dress code - long pants and closed shoes for men at dinner. If this is meant to maintain some sort of standard, than men in speedos should not be allowed on the beach.
I know the review is negative, but, if you've booked and are on your way, don't freak out. Antigua's climate is what you need and are coming for. You will have a good time, just lower your expectations. We only slept in our room, after all. The sheets and towels were clean, complimentary soap and shampoo, fantastic beaches, warm sun, plenty of food and drink and a chance to meet great people from all over the commonwealth. Your flight will be the worst part of your Antiguan vacation.
