I stayed at the Hawksbill for 2 weeks at the start of August with my wife and 2 teenage kids (15 and 16). My wife likes her luxury and would ideally stay in a modern 5*. After 3 days she had chilled and absolutely loved it - A first! My kids and wife all want to come back again in 2 years time and that is probably the highest accolade I can give.
Here are the negatives: many of the cheaper rooms have no aircon and are in the words of another reviewer "a bit tired". Even the top of the range rooms are basically slightly better tiled but have aircon. That being said we got a pair of back to back cottages 20 feet from the beach with no aircon and they were great. You fall asleep to the sound of crickets and wake up to the sound of the waves breaking on the beach. The rooms have mosquito screens but you do get bites. (Bring some fly killer and spray the rooms each day before you go up to dinner).
As per other commments the food is not haute cuisine but I loved having my fish cooked to order several times a week. Again not a single tummy problem.
Sometimes it rains and storms and this can be quite spectacular....But it soon passes. The rain is torrential.
The positives:
A fantastic set of beaches and gardens. Always clean and well maintained. (Except for the nudist beach (Eden beach) which has real charm and has been left largely to go wild. Walk to the very far end and it has a rock scultpures that people have erected and is like a small art gallery...check it out.
The staff: My kids loved the staff. My daughter had a crush on Francis at the watersports hut. They have masks and flippers you can use at no charge on the fantastic reefs only yards from the shore. (we have a large Conch now in our garden we picked up from near the Hawksbill island offshore). Special thanks go to David (always smiling), Agatha, Millie, Adrian, Latoya and Sylvia. We made a lot of friends...... Take the garden tour with Sylvia...really really interesting..Sylvia bought us fruit from her own garden for us to try..Mangoes, dates, pomegranites.
The cocktails: The bar do a number of specials..I loved the hawksbill special which contains a whole banana blended with rum amongst other things. The kids lived on a constant stream of Shirly temples (lemonade and grenadine)
In summary if you want fantastic value and are prepared for the fact that the rooms may be very basic but that you will be staying in a quiet secluded paradise then I cannot recommend this highly enough. We went low season and found the hotel was only about 30% full. We asked to move from the main block to the cottages and this was done at no charge. (In fact they supplied a basket of fruit as we were not happy with the rooms on the main block).
The best way to describe this place is that it is like going back in time to a bygone era. It lacks the frills and polish of a 5 star but somehow is all the better for it. It feels relaxed and unhurried. If you want modern luxury and rapid service pay the big premiuim to go somewhere else. Personally I found it charming and was happy to spend hours on the beach, do some sailing and watersports every other day and to spend 30 minutes each day snorkelling with my kids.
This hotel may be too quiet for some families and teenage children. My kids were happy to swim, read, play cards and relax
but it might not suit many other kids. The hotel was Chav free...and lets hope it stays that way.
I can whole heartedly recommend this place as a quiet slice of paradise for a truly relaxing holiday. We loved it. For the money it was superb...I booked late at hotel.com and grabbed a bargain.
We went during carnival (Start of August) and the whole town joins in. Quite a spectacle and very safe.
We will go back.....
