My parents,aged 68 and 64 accompanied my girlfriend(35)and i (37) th the Hawksbill for 2 weeks between 14th-28 th April this year,initially we were booked into the Grand Royal Antiguan but virgin told us it was closed and changed us to the Hawksbill back in November 05.I checked out the reviews on here and they were mixed,however on contacting some of the writers my mind was put at rest.After a delayed flight we arrived at the airport,on my last visit 4 years ago the airport was supposedly undergoing an upgrade,i have to chuckle to myself as i think its got even slower and more chaotic,after a long flight i can understand people becoming irritated at this but , this is the caribbean,just chill out,wait for your bags and away you go.A holiday is what you make it,if you want it to be irritating,confrontational,i want it and i want it now sort of holiday,don`t come here!!
I have travelled extensively throughout the caribbean,as have my parents,my girlfriend as not,on arriving at the Hawksbill the exterior of the reception had a quaint oldly worldly kind of feel,bags are transported by golf cart to your rooms,no problem,check in is a breeze,methodical but friendly and conversation wih the staff comes easy,a smile and a greeting and bobs your uncle.Sharon walked through reception and looked out at the view of he resort,she described it as breathtaking,i would agree,as good as anything ive seen in my 12 years of caribbean travel.I will make a few points and counter some criticisms i have read.
1)we had a garden view room,it was wonderfull,great terrace,views o the gardens, sea and beach,25mtrs away.The room was a pleasant,rustic,clean carribean room,2 big queen size beds,loads of draws,walk in wardrobes,big bathroom and huge shower,room for 2 !! hot water whenever required,toilet,everything was fine,clean and tidy,living area was packed full of informative magazines etc..kettle,tea,coffee,sugar,powdered milk(we asked at the restaraunt bar for a carton of milk and got one free of charge every time.)rooms cleaned by friendly chatty staff every day,only bugbear was that the were cleaned anytime between 8.30 and 7 at night,a bit of a regular timetable wouldn`t go a miss.
2)Beaches were great,4 of them spread out along the front of the resort,beach number 4 was clothing optional and is well away from the main complex,we never went but each to their own, sand was beautiful pale and soft,some parts on entering the sea are a bit rocky,but the soft sandy easy access parts 2 the sea are never far away,on beach number 2 infront of the main complex their is excellent access to the sea,loads of sunloungers(cleaned regularly)watersports are provided and all your needs are catered for,on all beaches,on entering the sea there is then a small sharp shelf so be aware.
3)food-Was excellent,buffet breakfast-large selection of hot and cold food,omlettes,pancakes cooked to order,cant fault it.Lunchtime meals are at the beachside restaraunt and grill,small set menu of basic but tasty food,different soups daily,daily grilled food,fish,chicken,burgers and many other bbq delights,kids are well catered for.Also large variety of fresh mixed salads.Evening meals in the top resaraunt are either buffet or a la carte,excellent choices,well cooked,well presented,its not the savoy but its fine caribbean fare.waiting staff are polite friendly and attentative.
4)drink)plentiful and varied,bar staff are good fun and enjoy chatting,just make an effort,smile ask how they are and you receive a really friendly reply and service.
5)Staff-i had read reviews on here about rude staff,oh no,take a look at youself,speak to people as you expect to be spoken to yourself,relax and chat to the staff,involve them ask questions,we found everyone to be fun and friendly,special mention to Beverly,Gerry,William,Smily geezer,Agatha,Chris,to many to mention but thanks to them all
6)The entertainment is low key and varied,enter into the spirit of things,chat to other guests,involve yourself and the nights can be as busy,or relaxed as you want.
7)Other guests-their was a wide age rage,from kids of 8 to teenagers,they were no problem,young adults to people my parents age,mostly English,we chatted to many people and made some great friends,some to last!,just make the effort and things go well,We met some lovey couples from Canada and the States,thanks for your company.
To close,book your trips through Agatha at the hotel,better value,try the rip to montserrat,250 us dollars but what a day !!!!taxi`s are reasonable price$30 dollars return to st johns,buses from st johns to explore the island are brilliant and dirt cheap.like i said,relax,dont get wound up,take everything in your stride and you will have the holiday of a lifetime,we will return.Ay questions then feel free to contact me;
markmuttley7@aol.com .Enjoy the Hawksbill its great,in reply to a reviewer who complained about the level of clientele,i never saw tracksuited,flip flop clad big guys in the resaraunt at night,smartly dressed casually attired maybe,but not as he stated,anyway some people aren`t happy unless they are complaining !!!
