Hawksbill Report
My husband and I took a chance on a last minute break for two weeks in early December 2004 and selected to go with Kuoni to Hawksbill for an all inclusive beach holiday. We were not disappointed! We had the most wonderful time and can fully recommend this resort if you are looking for a comfortable, casual, peaceful and relaxing beach holiday. Our direct 8 hour flight to Antigua with BWIA from Heathrow was easy and we were thru the local airport in less than ten minutes and on our way to Hawksbill. In the taxi were other visitors who told us they had been to Hawksbill before and also had friends who had visited several times – we soon found this to be the theme as there are many repeat visitors at Hawksbill and we soon discovered why. On arriving we were met with a breathtaking sunset view across the bay helped by a welcoming glass of champagne. Our accommodation was a beachfront cottage of the standard type and just yards from the beach in luxurious gardens – the room was spacious with two large beds, ceiling fan and fridge and separate shower/bathroom. It was not luxurious in any way but we soon found it to be completely adequate for our needs with friendly staff giving a thorough clean and change of all linen daily. The first night the crickets seemed noisy but afterwards we did not notice them. The Hawksbill ‘experience’ comes over you gradually – pale and white you stagger to your first breakfast to be overwhelmed by a selection of fruit, yoghurts, juices, pastries and eggs cooked every which way at your request, oh yes and yummy pancakes, bacon and maple syrup too. We became addicted to the coffee. The holiday diet plans are already in jeopardy. The days activity focuses around the beach with a choice of lazing and reading books, swimming or participating in watersports. There are four beaches to chose from but we mainly used the central beach where you have easy access to the bar and beach restaurant. There is a naturist beach that is long and sandy and our walks daily revealed a new horde of beautiful shells and coral pieces. Lunch is a convivial affair with barbecue choices of fish, meat and chicken and a good array of fresh salads and a daily choice of delicious ice-creams. Each day you notice fellow visitors developing their tans and becoming more relaxed as the Hawksbill ambiance works on them. The experience is all helped along by the superb staff and their attitude to the visitors – who are treated as both friends and customers. We found the staff really helpful and genuine and very sincere in their wish to make every visitor’s day a special experience. We snorkelled a lot and found plenty of fish at the headlands not far from the shore – the seawater was warm and inviting and shallow when you entered. The guys who ran the watersports shack were great and gave sailing and waterski lessons – they were really good fun and patient and safe teachers. The Hawksbill sun sets at about 5.30pm and some days was spectacular. Dinner was either a buffet or served in a candlelit restaurant – we enjoyed both. Once a week there is an evening beach barbeque - we amazed by the sheer musical talent and brilliance of the local steel band Halycon. Hawksbill was our first experience of an all inclusive and we had been apprehensive about two weeks of the same food but we found it really good, fresh and enjoyable catering for all diets, including vegetarians. Having access to an open bar made life very easy. We took some excursions which were easy to organise and very enjoyeable, we particularly liked visiting Falmouth Harbour and seeing jawdropping yachts and schooners, and the history of Nelsons Dockyard. The highlight of our trip was an 80 mile sea excursion sailing around the island in Wadadli Catamaran – wow! There is a well stocked visitor shop in the old Sugar Mill at Hawksbill and we were able to keep my husband happy by ordering The Sunday Times. There is a pampering health spa and I had a great facial. The first week we relaxed and unwound ourselves and in the second week we became more sociable and soon discovered that this resort is a second home for many visitors with people returning year after year. We do understand why – there is a magic in the place and if its right for you, then there is no need to look further. Visitors ages were very varied, some couples with small children, couples and honeymooners, empty nesters and people like ourselves who like to mix with all ages….. Nationalities were predominately American and English. We felt very happy and comfortable throughout our stay with a great sense of well being which we feel came from the dedication and care of the staff. The Manager does a great job in motivating and rewarding his staff. This is an honest resort where the customers welfare comes first and we felt we had very good value for money and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing beach break in beautiful surroundings. We were sad to leave and I am sure we will return – if you get the chance go there!
