Let me first thank all the people who wrote reviews about this resort. We knew exactly what to expect when we got there. This resort had great beaches, good food, good staff and very laid-back atmosphere.
I hope my review is useful to potential visitors.
Rooms - It was a low season & we were upgraded to the Beach Club Room on Honeymoon Cove...We were told these were the newest rooms on the resort. The rooms are average, but everything worked fine (A/C, phone, fridge, fan, showers). Ants and mosquitoes could be a problem, but when asked - the management promplty took care of the problem by providing Bug Spray. They have electric mosquito repellent in all the rooms.
Food - All-inclusive with Breakfast/Lunch/Tea-time/Dinner.
The breakfast was at the Tamarind Tree restaurant and it's an English/American breakfast with eggs/pancakes/potatoes/sausage/bacon, etc.
The lunch was at the Sea Grapes Bar & Restaurant. There are grill/order from the menu items. Not a very wide variety, but they have BBQ chicken/fish-catch of the day/Roti/pasta, etc. Vegetarian food is available on request and they are always ready to help you with your dietary needs.
We consistently skipped tea-time most of the days. Instead we had drinks at the bar. They usually have cheese/turkey/ham sandwiches during tea-time.
Dinner has a little twist to it every other day or two. They have Menu items or Buffet. Good selection here with chicken/fish/beef dishes being regular. The chef hooked me up with curry goat one day (very good local dish). Again, vegetarian food is always available on request.
Bars - They have two bars - One by the Tamarind Tree (Reception Area) and it opens around 5:00 pm. The other one at Sea Grapes Restaurant (mid-way in the resort) opens at 10:00 am. The drinks were average. The bar staff was good, but nothing above average.
Beaches - There are four beaches - We frequented the Honeymoon Cove most, because it was the least crowded (Sometimes only the two of us on the entire beach). The Sea Grapes beach has all the water sports stuff, and is most populated, because the Seaview Bungalows are right off this beach. We never went in the water at Royal Palm beach & the Eden beach. Just went for a walk, but they were not as crowded. The Royal Palm beach is also a public beach so you will often see locals over there, specially on Sunday.
Caution: Make sure you take Crocs or something to cover feet when you get in the water, because there's many rocks/sea-moss in certain areas. I was constantly paranoid about getting a cut from the rocks - although I didn't get one.
Water Sports - There are a bunch of activities to choose from, but I would suggest to be prepared for them if you try any. Snorkeling was fun because they have a variety of fishes close to the beach. Ocean Kayaking was also fun, but we found out that there are jelly-fishes if you go a lot further out in the water. They can train you for wind-sailing, etc. The guys at the water sports outlet are little moody and you just have to act like a student to get them to talk properly. I guess it's the ego thing where they think they know everything & you don't. But I played along & they were really helpful.
Staff - A very good staff - Everyone was extremely helpful when we needed something. Front desk receptionist/2 managers were always glad to help out. Especially Elvis & Katherine. The kitchen staff was also amazing. The chef was cool and so were all the others. The waiter/waiteresses were also very helpful and friendly. The interns who worked there at the bar & restaurant were also very helpful.
Entertainment - This is one department where they can improve a lot - But we were not expecting any thing major, (thanks to all the people who gave their reviews). This resort does not boast about night-life/partying/entertainment....I think Sandals would be a good place for that...And we didn't go to the resort for nightlife anyways....We went for a romantic getaway & some quiet time, and that's exaclty what we got.
Miscellaneous - The resort has good security people (very friendly).
They have a tour desk operator (she was the least friendly person i saw on the resort).
They have tennis/volley ball and cricket games, but since it was a low season and hot weather, I don't think they ever played....Once again, we didn't go to the resort for games.
They have shuttle to St. John's which is about 25 minutes drive from the resort. I think they should have these shuttles more often (may be because it was a low season, they only had it for one time a day, weekdays). They take you at 9:00 am & bring you back at 12:00 pm. It's a lot cheaper than getting a cab.
The Sugar Mill boutique offers souveniers, etc but the prices are ridiculous. I think it's worth taking the shuttle & going to St. John's if you plan on shopping. You get better prices & variety. They take you by the cruise shopping area (Redcliffe St) and Market St.
Most of the tourists at the resort were from England. There were also tourists from other Europena countries, and they were all very friendly.
Overall, Hawksbill is a great resort, but they can improve a few things. However - if you are looking for a nice romantic getaway and a laid-back life, this is the resort for you. If you are looking for Night life & partying, this is definitely not for you.
