“Nice but not wonderful”

Sirena Resort and Villas

Sirena is a moderately priced hotel near the west end of Anguilla. The hotel itself was recently modernized and now presents a very Miami (South Beach) decor. The restaurant/main pool area is extremely romantic, particularly at night. Room furnishings look Balinese, with lots of dark wood. The foliage on the property is nice but could use more attention: the area near the villas was not as attractive as the area near the main hotel buildings. The food at the restaurant was good, and the service was quite pleasant.

To access the beach, guests must walk a few minutes on a winding route. The hotel has inexplicably failed to put a sign at the crossroad, leaving guests to guess which way to turn. We ended up walking past a gaggle of apparently angry goats and then through an ugly, trash-strewn region before realizing that, at the crossroad, we had mistakenly turned right rather than left. The beach itself (Mead's Bay) is quite nice, but flocks of active birds, and construction directly next to the hotel, mars the site. Walking to the right (i.e., towards Frangipani and Malliouhana) enhances the beach experience.

On the downside, the front desk staff leaves somethings to be desired. The first thing we were told -- truly the first -- was that, if we stayed in our room a minute past check-out, we would be heavily fined. Not very welcoming. On the next day, the woman staffing the desk had an attitude and lacked basic knowledge about the area near the hotel.

On the whole, a nice stay.

I must say that I absolutely loved the hotel. I went to Sirena on for a getaway with my fiancé’ and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Sirena is a gorgeous hotel and very well kept. We had a superior double and the view o the ocean was one of the best I’ve seen. the restaurant (Mahi Mahi) was great. The entire staff was very pleasant especially the Front office manager. Although my fiancé and I went down to Anguilla on a whim, it was a great stay. Hotel in walking distance to beautiful beach. Also, provided free snorkel gear and help us to the best local attractions even arranged for a rental car.

Will definitely go back to Sirena! Wonderful stay and will recommend to family and friends. Thanks to all Sirena staff.

“Nice enough...”

Sirena Resort and Villas

Having read many reviews and now experienced the hotel for ourselves it is hard to form an easy view of our few days at Sirena and it is easier to see why it does have such mixed feedback.

Positives:

Fantastic beach at Meads Bay. Will be interesting to see what happens to the beach once the new hotel next door is finished (some noise but not a disaster if on beach) and how much of an impact it will have. Mahi Mahi restaurant was great and food to a high standard (same across the island). Relaxed atmosphere but were out of high season so could be why. Good sized room and balcony (although lacking in any real storage space)

Negatives:

This hotel really has to decide what it wants its proposition to be with some really high class venues opening up on the island. If it doesn't give more attention to small detail on things that will matter it will lose customers especially for the price it is currently charging. Some examples....towels weren't new and looked like they could do with replacing, staff on reception weren't generally interested in being helpful although did get better help with car rep, wine quality was terrible and did not have one good bottle on any night there.

We went to Cap Juluca as well which was almost over the other side of the road and it was in a different class. With the newer places opening up Sirena could really suffer if its not careful and take the opportunity to review all aspects of service from the welcome through to the general day to day service.

One thing to watch is billing. We signed and paid for what we thought was our final bill on the last day and then found a separate and unapproved charge hit our card after we'd gone for drinks in the room (eg locally bottled water, mini bar). Don't mind paying for what we had but if we had wanted to check what we had been charged for there wouldn't be an opportunity.

Dear bridgyLondon

Thank you for taking the time to write on Trip Advisor and describe your experiences during your stay at Sirena. All feedback is always very important to us whether it be positive or negative. We also post all comments on our website. The most important issue to us is to make sure our guests are happy with their stay and if not, how we can make improvements for the future. We do always urge guests to fill out our comments cards (which they receive when they arrive) and hand to our front desk staff on departure.

Please let me explain that Sirena Resort and Spa is a 3 star hotel and therefore cannot be compared to the 5 star resorts on the island i.e. Cap Juluca. We do not pretend to be what we are not and are priced accordingly.

We were very surprised to hear your comments on our front desk staff as they are one of our major assets to the hotel and have been for many years. I do believe there was some training taking place at the time so maybe there was some confusion there.

On the whole we apologise for your mixed feelings about your stay at Sirena and we do hope that you can come back in the future so that we can make sure your stay is a more pleasurable one all around.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at marian@sirenaresort.com.

Kind regards

I recently returned from a trip with my wife during the low season - with some mixed feelings.

I found the overall appearance of our room to be good, but there was insufficient extermination, and as a result, we were terrorized by bugs. The last day, there was no water in the morning due to a shortage. There was also holes in the screen door, and other minor signs of insufficient maintenance. The bed was unbearably soft, worn in the middle from use.

A lunch that was described as seafood salad contained imitation crab.

On the other hand, when our flight was delayed, food was in our room when we arrived (after the restaurant was actually closed) and we awoke to a tree-level view of the ocean. A short walk to the beach and we were in the paradise as described - alone on the beach with no one as far as the eye can see, calm waters, and a cooling breeze. The staff provided free snorkel gear, towels, and directions to local destinations, and arranged for a rental car quickly and efficiently.

I did not complain at the time, as I want my room to be right without the whining, but when I filled out my customer feedback survey, I was offered a significant discount if I wish to return.

I gotta say, I am really surprised to see so many great reviews for this hotel. While the property itself is pretty good, particularly for the price, the service was ATROCIOUS.

The room: We knew not to expect too much for the price. The room was small but the bed was comfortable. Had a very small terrace and working fan and A/C. The shower, however, was truly terrible - it was not closed off and, as a result, water got EVERYWHERE as we showered. The shower head, as described by my husband, "looks like something you'd get out of a CrackerJack box." Given the fact that I was sunbured by the end of the first day, the harsh spray of the terrible shower did nothing to help the pain. We wondered if it was different in other rooms (we stayed in a "standard" room). The towels were old and warped and felt like sandpaper - including the "beach towels."
Our room was also in the noisiest spot in the whole hotel - we were woken up every morning by maids, arriving cars, etc. It was SERIOUSLY lacking in privacy, as the curtains didn't even cover the entire windows. We had to rig it ourselves so patrons walking to the pool, around the gardens, and to the beach could not see us changing. Pay the extra money and stay on the second floor (most costly rooms), if you're able.

Front desk: The same woman was at the front desk for 75% of the time we stayed there, and was literally the least helpful hotel employee I've ever encountered in my life. We asked numerous favors and questions - from asking whether we would be charged for local calls (she answered "depends on the minutes" and promptly hung up on us) to a request to have her help set up a bike rental (she refused to call the rental place for us, had no idea of rates, and was blatantly rude in trying to direct us to their location) - and she was consistently rude, unenthusiastic, and unhelpful.
Not to mention that we asked one morning at 10AM if they would be so kind as to cash a traveler's check for us. They informed us that the hotel only cashes $100 a day in traveler's checks for the ENTIRE hotel. This is for ALL guests at the hotel - they only cash $100 total! (Keep in mind that travler's checks only come in denominations of $50 and $100!) We had to set our alarms and wake up early the next day to make sure we were the first. The customer service at this hotel gets MAYBE 1 out of 5 stars. We encountered several friendly people in Anguilla, and NONE of them worked at our hotel. (Maids and waitresses included.)

Property: The property itself was decently maintained, with a restaurant (too expensive, but so is every restaurant on the island) which overlooks a handsome pool area. The garden was nice, although the hammocks need to be replaced (my butt was literally on the ground). There are many flowers and a secondary pool, in case the first is crowded with kids. The beach is close - you can see the ocean from certain areas of the hotel, and it's maybe a 5 minute walk, tops. They provide a few beach chairs (many of which were broken) and umbrellas for their guests, but get there early if you want to claim one. Overall, the property was really nice and in a good location. I really liked Mead's Bay beach. But the people working at the hotel made the property uglier.

Overall, the good and bad of this hotel really average out for a pretty decent experience for the price. But I will never again return to this hotel based on the service alone. Truthfully, I don't think we ever plan on returning to Anguilla again. It's pretty dirty and run-down, and not as lush as we'd hoped or expected. If we're ever going to pay this much for a vacation again, we will simply go back to Europe.

We are very sorry to hear that your experience with us was a dissapointment.

Let me address the bathrooms. All our showers are open, this is the design of the bathrooms. We are currently in the process of renovating our bathrooms with new marble tiles and new fixtures and fittings. Towels will also be replaced for the new season.

We are very surprised to hear your unfortunate experience with our front desk. They really are, and have been, our main asset to the hotel and most comment cards we receive back do mention the staff on the front desk being the most helpful and friendly.

With regard to the changing of travellers checks - we are not a bank so unfortunately cannot hold that amount of cash on the premises. We advise guests use the local banks to change these, the bank being just a short drive away.

We are deeply sorry for the disspointment you experienced at Sirena but we do hope that you will return at sometime in the future so that we can make sure you have a more pleasurable stay with us.
