“The Caribbean as it should be”

The Ferryboat Inn and Restaurant

The Ferryboat Inn is the Caribbean as it once was. It is an owner-operated and managed Inn with a special atmosphere. Owner Marjorie McClean, her son Christian, and other family members run the place, and they offer a great deal. My friend and I had the run of an entire one-bedroom (with two beds), two-bath apartment, including sizable kitchen, living room, and terrace for $180 a night. The place included a telephone for local calls and cable television. It was spotless. Marjorie had also left for us a full fruit basket, milk, orange juice, bakery bread, homemade marmalade, coffee and sugar. We were warmly welcomed. The Ferryboat Inn is on a nice beach near the small harbor, with a view of St. Martin across the channel. The lights twinkle at night. The bar/restaurant offers the best rum punches I've ever had, as well as excellent burgers, a mean black bean soup, steaks and other dishes. We loved hanging out there in the evening conversing with Marjorie, her clan, other Inn guests, and other people who come to the Inn for its delicious food and special ambiance. We liked the resident canines, who once they got to know you would encourage you to talk the beach with them. The Ferry Boat Inn is not for somone who wants a luxe vacaton. While you have daily maid service, you won't have chocolates on your pillow or someone waiting at your beck and call. What you will have is the gent who rakes the seaweed on the beach offer you a coconut he has just taken off a tree, with a straw in it. You'll learn what the real Anguilla is like from Marjorie, her family, locals and repeat guests. My only quibbles were with the water pressure, although hot water is aplenty, the towels that could have used a bit more fluff, and the railing and terrace rail that had peeling paint. But these things paled compared to the experience we had. A bonus, the Rendevous Bay Hotel, on a beautiful beach, also with a lovely dining experience, is right nearby. It too is a family-run property. But I'd still head back to the Ferry Boat.

Work had booked me into a faceless apartment hotel – where I had a room that felt (and looked) like a walk-in fridge. It gave me the creeps and I got up early to pack and move on.

The options were either the highly rated glamour pad at Cap Juluca (at a very good rate) or the family owned Ferry Boat Inn (at a very good price) – I wasn’t paying so didn’t base my decision on price alone but chose the FBI and have no regrets.

When I arrived Marjorie, the charismatic Trinidadian owner, came from the bar and showed me to my room (number 8 as referred to in the review below). It was huge – one bedroomed, two bathroomed, with large living and kitchen areas and a vast balcony. In London it would be cut up to have at least three bedrooms! There was a great view across the pretty grounds and beautiful beach to St Martin. By the beach was the small bar with a large kitchen serving delicious fresh food.

When I left (to go to St Martin as overall Anguilla is perhaps not the prettiest place to linger) Marjorie drove my luggage to the ferry (don’t let this put you off, it’s a fairly small boat that take foot passengers only – not a cross channel monster) and I was able to walk barefoot along the white sandy beach: a truly great way to end my memorable short stay there.

This place is a gem for the money! We stayed in apartment #8, which has a spectacular view of St. Martin. Not exactly luxurious, but neither is the price. We had a full kitchen, TWO full baths and a private terrace; everything is very clean, spacious and comfortable. The little while-sand beach is practically your own, and having the bar and restaurant on the premises is a plus. You always need a car to really function on Anguilla, but this is a great home base in a convenient location!

The restuarant atmosphere was casual (in a god way) and the owners very friendly. It is located on the beach with a beautiful view of St. Maarten. Great conversation and great food! Try the steak au poir or the lobster thermidor. A must visit!
