My husband and I just returned from a wonderful trip (sans kids) to Anguilla and since we actively used tripadvisor to plan our trip, I felt it only fair to contribute once we were back. Warning - this is a long post, so I'm dividing my review into 3 sections for easier reading:
Anguilla
Great island. Beautiful beaches (super fine sand). Great restaurants.
Definitely visit Shoal Bay East. It has snorkling just off the beach and restaurants right there for easy lunch and drinks. Rent 2 chairs and an umbrella for $10. This is a more populated beach than others on the island, so go on days when you're feeling social and hit others when you're looking for peace and quiet.
Check out Meads Bay and Sandy Ground for sunsets.
Mostly, the island seems pretty quiet, but there are a few places to go for nightlife - all basically at Sandy Ground. Johnno's, Elvis' and Pumphouse (although Pumphouse was by far the most happening place). Dune Preserve is a short walk from CuisinArt and Bankie Banx plays there when he's in town, but it was more of a mellow evening. I kept hoping for more from Dune Preserve in terms of lunches or nightlife - it just always seemed dead.
With all of these places to go, you want to rent a car.
While things are still quiet now, I don't think they will be for long - there was construction everywhere we went. It was never in the way - but it's just a sign of how the island is changing. If you want the peace and quiet most of the reviews talk about - go soon or you'll miss your chance.
Finally, I should note that Anguilla is not easy to get to. Interestingly enough, I didn't notice so much on my way over (perhaps that was the beers I had while we were waiting for the Funtime Ferry), but it took about 10 hours to get home when our direct flight from St. Martin was only 4 hours. That said, the Funtime Ferry was a perfectly reasonable way to go - it wasn't amazing but there weren't any major hiccups. Note that there are competing ferry services you could check out.
Cuisinart
We decided to splurge on a Luxury Junior Suite at CuisinArt for our stay in Anguilla. The room really is huge and quite nice. The bathroom was luxuious, the bed was extremely comfortable and the view from the third floor balcony was amazing (St. Martin in the distance). I was disappointed in the Solarium, though - why would I ever go there when I had this fabulous balcony? It did prove useful for spray on sunscreen and drying wet suits where they wouldn't blow away. And, of course, breakfast in your room/balcony is a must - what a great way to start your day! They say there's a charge, but we never incurred one.
A couple of other points....People rave about the other beaches on the island, but Rendesvous Bay is a great beach. We got the couples massage that's supposed to have a view, but we weren't really situated in a way that we could see anything except when we arrived and left. There were kids at the resort, but they weren't bothersome at all. Mostly they were at the pool, but even there they seemed well behaved. The happy hour mentioned in one post is only during low season (June, July & August). We missed sorbet every day so I can't confirm whether that's year-round or not. The coconut drink from the beach bar is good if you like pina coladas and perhaps more importantly is a good value vs buying a normal drink ($15 vs $9 for twice as much).
Restaurants
Cafe Med - The food here was fine, but service was not great. I wouldn't come if you aren't staying at CuisinArt, but if you are, you don't need to feel compelled to leave for lunch every day.
Caprice - The food was melt in your mouth amazing - I was still thinking about it days later. And equally impressive was the impeccable service and presentation. The owner (who was also our server) clearly takes pride in his business - from recommendations to a clever spoon technique for cleaning crumbs off the table and more. If you drink Grand Marnier, order it with dessert for a little show.
Straw Hat - We saw great reviews for this place and it did have a very nice location, but the food was only ok. Note: their seafood could be what makes this place, but since neither of us ate seafood I can't say.
Lobster BBQ at Santorinis - this was a pretty good buffet, even for those who don't like lobster. It's not cheap, but most meals on the island aren't.
Picante - food was good, atmosphere was lively and the joint was packed. Not really the place for a romantic dinner, but worth a visit.
Malliouhana - What stood out was the bar and the atmosphere at the restaurant more than the food. Food was good, don't get me wrong, just not as good as Caprice. Whether you eat dinner here or not, come for drinks at sunset - they have a huge bar area compared to other places and a nice drink list.
Uncle Ernies - on Shoal Bay East - decent food for a reasonable price
Smokey's - great jerk chicken and other good food. Laid back. Nice view. The only place we went to twice.
Mangos - nice location, food was ok, service was very slow (not just island slow - it took more than an hour between when we ordered and when our food arrived). Looked like it might be a good place for drinks.
One thing to keep in mind about Anguilla is it's expensive. Expect to pay $50 a day for lunch and $200 a day for dinner. And, of course, that's on top of a rather pricey room. So, while we had a great trip and have no regrets, we both agreed that next time we'll opt for Sandals in the Bahamas (or similar) for 1/2-1/3 the price.
