“I was so glad I found this inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2010

Just 2 or 3 miles beyond the rush and bustle of Boothbay Harbor, this inn was terrific. Set on a beautiful 40+ acres of a wooded peninsula on Southport Isalnd, with the bays and inlets of Boothbay Harbor all around it. One of the 5 or 6 small buildings of units is dog-friendly, which was nice, and there were great breakfasts in the Pavilion dining room. Just outside the dining room was a lovely open (roofed) pavilion, perfect for taking that last cup of coffee outside to sit at one of the tables there and read the newspapers. They only serve (a very good) breakfast here, so you'll have to go out for other meals, which was fine with us. Lots to choose from right in the area.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms were immaculate and comfortable. They were big enough to leave the suitcases lying around and still feel uncrowded. A lovely deck overlooking the water right outside the room's front door, with 2 good chairs and a table on the deck.

The whole place felt comfortable and serene, very kid-friendly since it's well off the main road, and it has lots of paths around for exploring.

There was a well-kept swimming pool (heated) with plenty of lounge chairs, a little miniature golf area, tennins and basketball couts a short walk away, a lovely pier with seating, kayaks and canoes to use.

There's no "beach" at the resort, but if you go down further on Southport Island, at the "Public Landing" there's a great little sandy beach - good for beachcombing and swimming, or sitting on the sand to read or watch the boats go by. It's in a cove so there's no big waves, but protected, would be good for kids.

Close enough to Boothbay Harbor to zip in for lunch or dinner, and that's a great little resort town to browse around in - plenty of varied places to eat, concerts and good shops, lots of art galleries etc. - but I was so happy to be outside the congestion of the village itself. Be sure to go exploring around Southport Island, it's lovely. I'd recommend the Ocean Gate to family and friends for sure, and may well plan to go back myself..

We stayed at this hotel during Windjammer Days. We stayed in an oceanfront room with 2 double beds. This room has been updated with new bedspreads, bathroom and carpeting. I do wish the sheets & towels had been nicer, they were cheap and flimsy. Nice ones would go a long way to making the stay more comfortable. The room itself was fine and the view can not be beat, It was also probably one of the quietest places I have ever stayed. The grounds and buildings need a good coat of paint, the lawn needed mowing, and some weeding of the flower beds and new bark mulch would really add to the overall feel of the place. My husband said that the breakfasts were nothing fancy, but adequate. We were able to briefly use the pool between rain showers . It was refreshing, but one of the other guests skimmed off a lot of debris, so that could also use a little more care. The mini golf area could definitely use some updating. There are kayaks and canoes available to roam the cove. I did expect more from previous reviews. Hopefully management will give this place a little more attention because it has the potential to be a great place.

First, I'm happy to hear that you took advantage of the Super Saver rate. It represents an excellent value. Your decision to upgrade to one of our newly renovated superior waterfront rooms was also a great decision as these rooms provide the absolute best views and value available. I was disappointed to hear of the problem with the tub drain as these are all newly installed tubs. We'll have that investigated and corrected. You may have noticed our crews hard at work painting the few remaining buildings in the standard category that you had originally reserved. Our goal is to elevate all of our rooms to the superior class as quickly as possible. I hope that you contacted the desk regarding the iron as that could have easily been rectified. We appreciate your comments and hope to have another opportunity to put our best foot forward for you on a future visit.

We stayed at Ocean Gate based on it's high trip advisor ratings. However we were disappointed in that we were unable to get a needed item for our room after 8 pm because the office staff had left for the evening. Also there was no hook on the bathroom door for you to hang anything. You couldn't adjust the thermostat on the air conditioner which was an old window unit. We would not be staying at this resort again.

In theory, this was a great place to stay. We had a big room with a beautiful view of the harbor. The complex offered a pool, hot tub, 9 holes of mini golf, a basketball court, kayak rentals and breakfast.

Maybe we were just unlucky, but a few things left kind of a bad taste in our mouth. First of all, as soon as we arrived (around 5:30pm), I noticed there were no sheets on the bed. I called the office, and it turned out they'd just forgotten to finish cleaning our room. So a few minutes later a couple of guys showed up with a vacuum cleaner, etc., and we sat out on the deck while they got our room ready, which was awkward.

That night, my husband tried to get on the wireless internet, but despite trying and trying, his computer was unable to find the signal. The next morning it was fine again, but then that evening neither of us could log on with our laptops (so we know it wasn't just the fault of the computer).

Also, the door has a window in it with no curtain, and the bed is at the same end of the room as the door. So an exterior light shone into our room all night.

Finally, one of the reasons we chose Ocean Gate was they offer a breakfast every morning that includes about 5 - 6 hot items. The 2nd morning we got there about 20 min before breakfast was supposed to end, and they were out of both the potatoes and eggs. I stood there with a newspaper and waited and waited. After around 10 minutes they finally brought out potatoes, but then I had to wait another 5 or so for the eggs.

In the end I still think staying there was worth it, especially if it'd stopped raining long enough for us to take a kayak out! But after reading all the rave reviews, we were pretty disappointed.

We certainly liked the "theory" but, unfortunately missed the "reality a bit in this case. Our newly installed free wireless system was experiencing a few start-up bugs which we've since remedied. We've also tightened up our housekeeping assigment program to ensure that all of the rooms get completed on time as scheduled. We take special pride in our breakfast offerings and make every effort to avoid overcooking food so that it sits on the buffet. It appears that you might have been one of the last guests to arrive for the day so the staff prepared fresh food for your enjoyment. I apologize for the delay but am happy that they accommodated you properly. Overall, there's nothing like a rainy day to put a damper on things. I'm glad that in spite of the inconveniences that you still felt that your overall visit with us was worth it!

we booked a super saver rate. The building we stayed in was quite shabby on the outside. The room was spacious and the view from the balcony was of the cove and very tranquil. The room needed a little work. water stains on the ceiling and the wallpaper pulling up here and there. My wife decided to take a bath, the tub wouldn't hold water. The next morning we decided to upgrade to the waterfront building. The room was smaller but very nice. My wife decided to take a bath, that tub didn't hold water either. The breakfast was nice though and the location was convenient to town. We asked for a adjustment for the tub and the iron that didn't work. They said they'd refund one night but just gave us the lower saver rate instead.

We arrived to Ocean Gate Resort and noticed immediately the attention to detail that all great resorts and destinations have. Flourescent lighting, low flow water fixtures, and an environemtnal awareness that escapes many hotels. This complex turns the lights down or off at night so star gazing is not impeded with unnecessary light pollution and really seems to get it that being in a natural place does not mean ripping every tree down to augment a view. An osprey nest a few hundred yards off the pier, a tranquil place for weary travelers who especially need to know that the places that they stay, want to conserve resources and leave the beauty of what was there before.
We will be back.

We went to Booth Bay on a photo/writing tour of Mass/Maine, --and went to heaven at Ocean Gate. Found it on the internet with good reviews. We were blown away! Did not want to leave--tried to extend but could not break the schedule. The people, food-(A+), acomodations, scenery, and amenities of the area have pushed this accidental find to the top of a fifty year list of travel stop destinations. You can really tell they care! It shows and we expect it is always that way. We wish all stops were this amazingly perfect! Superb destination Ocean Gate! Well done and thanks so much!
