“Our favourite spot to have a weekend break from the city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2007

Last stayed here 5 years ago and the place still is wonderful. We booked the schooner cottage which is the best if you have kids, as it has a separate room with two beds. Has a king bed in the main room, wonderful window seats and balcony with a sea view - although the trees are getting larger so the view is getting smaller. Very private. We didn't see any other people although the place was booked up.

Cottage was large, clean and beautifully decorated. Water pressure is better than 5 years ago, but one must remember that the place is on tank water. Love the fact that your organic kitchen waste is collected and used for fertilizer on the garden.

Garden is fabulous and the kids thought it was great that you could pick herbs and lemons/limes/feijoas, and use some plants as mosquito repellent. Great picnic spots all through the property for lunch or dinner. Barbecues at each cottage. Pool is salt water, very cool but wonderful once you're in.

Estuary a delight to work around. Good swimming. We took our optimist yacht and had a sail - very safe. Lots of fish so take a net and go floundering!

Cookies provided on arrival, videos if you need them, kids toys and port-cot provided. Staff wonderfully friendly and accommodating. We'd definitely recommend this place to stay if you have a young family and want an idealic quiet romantic place to stay.

Quaint and unique cottages with style and decor reflecting different themes. We stayed in the GumDiggers Cottage which was made of earthbrick and displayed interesting kauri artefacts and photographs from gumdigging days. The cottage was appealing as it had a bay window which looked out over the beach with lots of cushions and rugs for a lovely afternoon relax. The elevated deck looking out over the bay was also fantastic.
Another good point of this resort is that you are given beach access by way of a private walkway.

The service we received from reception was excellent. The chocolates we received on arrival were also much appreciated!

On the downside, the cottage was a little dirty - lots of cobwebs and a bit of mould; but perhaps that was to provide for the overall effect. Another small gripe was that there was no curtain on the toilet window (which caused a bit of concern since we wondered if people walking past could see in). The shower water pressure was also extremely low and it is best not to use the taps while someone is having a shower!

We were hoping for a quiet week away but unfortunately the owners let a large family with atleast five children to stay in the cottage opposite the gumdiggers so we listened to several hours of children screaming in the pool (which was directly outside our cottage). On the website it does state that the maximum occupancy for any cottage is 4 and has a promise of "quiet seclusion" on their website - we felt that this didn't really deliver.

However, overall, the charms did outweigh the negatives.

If you are looking for "quiet seclusion" then perhaps opt for a non-school holiday period as the uniqueness and appeal of this resort
certainly warrants a stay.
