“Good and bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

Arrived at 11pm, reception was very efficient and gave directions to our room an a resort map...trouble was it was dark and quite a large resort...eventually found our room, the room was tidy but quite small, the tiled shower floor was quite dirty in the corners, had air conditioning but was very noisy. Resort package included tropical breakfast (usual in Raro) was ok and also offered cooked menu at extra cost. The resort offered various activities some however most seemed to be cancelled, some due to king tides which could not be helped but others due to lack of numbers...every other resort I have stayed at have held these even with very little uptake. My package also included a car use for 1 day, our car was booked but when we went to collect it, it was not available as someone else had it, re docked for the following day....same story, eventually we were given most of a car later that day...no drivers window..meant we could not park securely or keep dry. Now the good bits, Rarotonga is an amazing place and the Rarotongan has some of the best beach and snorkelling on the island, the staff as all the island people were lovely, friendly and very apologetic for the lack of activities. Captain Andy's bar has a great selection of cocktails and bar snacks, great bar staff (although to few on duty for happy hour) would I stay there again, I have stayed in better places on Rarotonga for less money, so no I would not. However would defiantly go back to Rarotonga, a great place for a beach break.

Room Tip: The king tides came thru the beach front rooms at 1am so.....

Thank you for taking the time to upload your review on your recent stay at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa.

We are pleased that your arrival and check-in went smoothly but appreciate the concerns you raised in regards to locating your room and as a result have incorporated new measures to assist our arrivals.

However we are concerned that you were not happy with the standard of housekeeping during your stay. We have made several changes to our systems and procedures in our Housekeeping department as a result of your feedback.

We did not receive any notification in regards to your concerns for housekeeping however this would have been addressed quickly if brought to our attention.

We apologize that some of our activities were cancelled during your stay. Unfortunately some of these activities cannot proceed without minimum numbers being achieved.

Our Duty Managers are available between the hours of 7am and 12midnight to assist guests with addressing any concerns they may have. Our Resort Manager would have also been happy to discuss your concerns but this would have been more productive if raised immediately with the Duty Managers rather than at the end of your stay. This would have allowed us the opportunity to not only resolve your concerns but to carry on with enjoying your holiday.

We appreciate your feedback that has highlighted areas that we need to improve on and as a result, we have implemented thorough training and system reviews throughout the company to resolve the concerns you have raised.

Spent a week here in early May. Had alot of laughs with the staff. Service a bit slow at times but as we weren't in a hurry it didn't matter. Wonderful snorkling every day,and feeding the fish off the restaurant decking was a highlight. We chose to use the local bus service, great way to get around, and some of the bus drivers have a wicked sense of humour. If you want to go fishing I recommend going with Marlin Queen Fishing Charters. Excellent service. Resort facilities and rooms were fine. Between relaxing on the beach, snorkling, and exploring the island, you don't spend a huge amount of time using the facilities. The island is relatively clean and the people are very friendly. I would probably go there just for their wonderful sense of humour.

Room Tip: Choose a beachfront room if possible

Thank you for your review in regards to your May 2013 tropical escape at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa.

Set on Aroa Beach, Rarotonga's most beautiful white sandy beach on the shores of Aroa Lagoon (the Lagoon of Love), The Rarotongan is located on the island's sunshine southwest coast where guests can enjoy all-day sun, stunning sunsets, all-tide safe swimming and excellent off-beach snorkelling in the traditional marine sanctuary directly in front of the resort.

Expansively laid out amidst six acres of lush tropical gardens featuring hibiscus, banana and coconut palms, all of The Rarotongan's one hundred and nine rooms, suites, honeymoon bungalow and 3 bedroom pool villa are no higher than two storeys and are either set on absolute beachfront or in very close proximity to the beach, and feature an authentic Pacific aesthetic combined with the charm of Polynesian-style architecture.

A daily Tropical Breakfast Buffet (Continental Breakfast) of a variety of seasonal island fruits, homemade yoghurt, fresh-baked muffins, Danish pastries, croissants, toast, spreads, tropical juices, tea & coffee, is served for your enjoyment in the TE VAKA Restaurant from 7am to 10am daily. You can also select from a variety of cooked and light breakfast options from the Breakfast Menu.

Our Activities Hut is located poolside and is open daily from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Our activities staff would be delighted to assist you with any equipment and information relating to the extensive resort activities programme. The Resort offers a wide range of exciting recreational, sporting and cultural activities, many focused on the lagoon itself which is a marine sanctuary (ra’ui), declared by traditional leaders on 1 March 2000 for the conservation of marine life within the zone. Consequently the all tide snorkelling in Aroa Lagoon, a fish breeding area, is exceptional with an amazing variety of fish and the very best available on Rarotonga.

The activities staff are also happy to assist with providing beach towels and equipment for Resort activities such as snorkelling masks and flippers, reef shoes (essential if you’re exploring the magnificent marine reserve), kayak paddles, tennis balls & racquets, tennis court bookings, volleyballs, petanque and a wide variety of board games, plus extensive local knowledge. Other beach and lagoon activities include beach volleyball, kayaking, outrigger canoeing, fish feeding, crab hunting & racing and night snorkelling.

Additionally The Rarotongan Resort & Spa also has a fantastic games lounge which provides great facilities for entertaining all age groups. Features include a big screen TV, pool table, guest library, table tennis and giant chess playing area.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Rarotongan in the near future.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in February 2013 and LOVED it! I did see some bad reviews for The Rarotongan so was a bit worried but i truly think people are just fussy! Get out of your hotel room and enjoy yourself! you are on a tropical island!! The staff were so friendly and we loved our room! when you go to a tropical island and dont want to spend a crazy amount of money you cant expect a 5 star room.there were so many activities at The Rarotongan and its easily accesable to everything you need. Would highly reccomend Coco-latte cafe across from Wigmores Supermarket for lunch, it was fairly priced for great meals and not far down the road from The Rarotongan. Feb is during the quiet season so thats why we stayed at The Rarotongan instead of The Sanctuary but if we were to go in the busy season we would stay at the adults only Sanctuary. In Rarotonga if you are nice to the locals they are nice to you and i think tourists have to remember this when they go over. Alot of people complain about the breakfast service but come on! a cooked breakfast every morning is the last thing i want in the Rarotonga heat! they had so much! toast, cerials, other breads, a lot of fruit, yoghurt, juices. Go to Raro and enjoy it instead of complaining people!

Room Tip: If you can, stay in the deluxe beach front rooms.

We are glad that you were able to take advantage of this wonderful experience personally.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Rarotongan in the near future.

On our first visit to the island we popped in here for a visit & were put off by the tired decor and unpleasant smells and general feeling of decay. On our second visit we went back, to show the kids what a resort is like, and had a wonderful experience - but should've stopped there!

So 2nd visit we went down to the bar and asked if we could have lunch, the waiter couldn't have been more helpful & took us to a lovely spot in the shelter overlooking the lagoon. Came back to the table to take our orders with a bag of stale bread so we could feed the fish. That was a hit with everyone, as was the food - yum and delicious drinks.

So we went back a third time for sunset happy hour. What an unhappy hour we spent, the staff were rude, started to take our order then wandered off, returned and demanded to know if we were ready (yes as we were before), claimed we'd ordered items we hadn't, shouted as us when we refused to pay for it (large unopened bottles of water),

The drinks were yum but one was overflowing and spilled all over the table and the waiter just glared at me and walked off, I had to ask another unsmiling staff member who was wiping tables down nearby to clean it and she also acted like I'd done it.

The food wasn't a patch on a couple of days before & to end on a high I went to the same checkout I paid at previously only to have our waiter yell across the room, "excuuuuse me - you pay here."

Such a shame, you can be sure we won't be staying there any time soon.

This was my first island holiday so was not sure what to expect.
The lagoon was AMAZING! And everything I had imagined a tropical island would be like.
The water was crystal clear, the snorkling was so cool! Warm water and beautiful climate.
Rarotonga itself is just paradise! The people are so friendly and cruising around on the scooter was so much fun. The restaurants around the island were delish! I can recommend Trader Jacks and the Spaghetti House and Cafe Jireh.
Unfortunatly the resort itself was not as amazing.
It needs a bit of an upgrade really. The rooms are a bit dated.
The cleaning leaves alot to be desired....they just dont seem to have very high standards. I am not overly fussy myself, but on more then one occasion we had to ask for toilet paper, facecloths or for a bin to be changed. They didnt clean toilets and didnt restock supplies.
The service was really slow - slow for even island time standards. I waited for about 30 minutes one day to be served for a drink...there were only 2 other people at the bar! They just ignore you!
Some staff can also be quite rude and just dont really seem to care. It is a waste of time complaining, because they just shrug their shoulders and look at you with a blank face.
Over half of the games in the 'arcade' room were out of order, but didnt have 'out of order' signs which meant you only found out they werent working after you put your money in!
I will definitely visit Rarotonga again, but I am not sure that I would go back to this resort.

Room Tip: Get a room as close to the lagoon as possible.

My husband and I held our wedding here in April and were pleased with the day. Despite the rain the staff took special pains to ensure it was still enjoyable for us and our guests.
The food was always good at the resort, the service was mostly good, although sometimes there seemed to be a long wait in the restaurant for any kind of service even when quiet.
The honeymoon suite was very nice. The other room we stayed in - a beachfront room and the rooms our friends were in (garden rooms) - need some serious renovations for the price you pay.
There was also an ugly above ground pool next to the lovely inground which kind of marred the look of the resort.
Recommend hiring scooters and checking out other locations such as Muri beach too. If there is anywhere in the world you want to safely try out scooter-ing, this is the place.

Thank you for your review in regards to your stay with us at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa.

Congratulations once again on your recent wedding celebration ~ we are delighted that despite the “liquid sunshine”, it was still a special and enjoyable day for you and your guests.

Indeed, the location of our sister resorts, The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa and our adult’s only boutique resort Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach are difficult to beat. Both are perfectly located on the southwest coast of Rarotonga enjoying all day sun and all tide snorkelling for our guests. And what better place for snorkelling than our traditional Aroa Marine Reserve with an amazing variety of jewel-colored reef fish and marine life!

The Honeymoon Bungalow features a unique design with a broad wraparound verandah and a high-pitched thatched roof providing a fabulous sense of space and island romance. Nestled in a completely secluded, lush tropical garden, this is your own private paradise, complete with your own private pool and sauna (for this reason the Honeymoon Bungalow is not recommended for children and infants who are not competent swimmers). Featuring elegant polished tropical wooden floors, rattan-lined walls, chocolate-coloured water-hyacinth furniture, LCD TV, privately-commissioned lighting laced with black pearl shell, luminous open-air shower, outdoor ‘starlet’ spa bath on the verandah, and spacious bathroom with rain tree vanity top and over-sized double basins, the Honeymoon Bungalow offers an incredible sense of freedom with spectacular indoor-outdoor flow through four wide openings onto the verandah, and the broad encircling deck means that sun-lovers can follow the sun all day in complete privacy. This wonderfully secluded, romantic bungalow provides easy access to the lagoon via a private gateway tracing a sandy path to the white sand beach and blue lagoon. This is the ultimate honeymoon hide-away.

We do apologise that you experienced some delay when dining in our Restaurants and our Restaurant & Bar Manager is actively working with his team of staff to address the concerns you have raised.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope to be able to welcome you back to our shores and Resorts in the near future.
