“Peaceful & relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2012

Good hotel, there is plenty to do at the resort without having to go anywhere and the majority of the activities are free. Our room was cleaned daily, we enjoyed snorkling and swimming in the pool. The only downfall was the service at the restaurant and the quality of the food. The food was pretty disappointing but it doesn't seem limited to the resort.

Kia Orana kiwiflyer10,

Thank you for your review in regards to your recent stay with us at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa.

We are happy to read that you thoroughly enjoyed the accommodation, snorkelling and swimming available at The Rarotongan. Both our sister resorts, The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa and our adults only boutique resort, Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach are perfectly situated on the stunning Aroa Marine Reserve “Raui”. Guests of our resorts have quick and easy access to an amazing array of jewel-colored reef fish and marine life – literally only a few steps from your doorstep :)

However, we are disappointed that you found the dining available at the Resorts and around the island unsatisfactory. We have a wide selection of dining options available across both our resorts to cater to the tastes and needs of our guests including:

The TE VAKA Restaurant, right on Aroa Lagoon, plays host to our tropical breakfast buffet and buffet dinner shows as;

• The electrifying ‘Legends of Polynesia’ Island Nights and underground oven Umu Feast with succulent chicken, pork, lamb and other island favourites
• The amazing Tamariki Rarotonga Fire Dancers and Island BBQ

Captain Andy’s Beach Bar & Grill is just right for a café latte, flat white or drink anytime, for a casual lunch, snack or light meal, and for a relaxed a la carte dinner overlooking the pool. At least once during your stay, try our famous Seafood Platter for two. Captain Andy’s is open daily from 11am till late, with our daily Cocktail Happy Hour from 5pm to 6pm.

An extensive Kids Menu is available at Captain Andy’s Beach Bar & Grill offering kids favourites as well as healthy options too! Family Dine Time - Bring the kids down for dinner between 5pm and 6pm and get a free ice cream for the kids!

For the truly romantic a Private Candlelit Dinner with personal waiter in our beach or garden gazebos is a “must do bucket list” experience.

The Hibiscus Hut, open from 11am to 4pm, offers a selection of snacks, ice cream, refreshing beverages, coffees, freshly made sandwiches, salads, fruits etc. in a casual café setting by the pool.

Our sister Resort, Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach, is an adult’s only boutique resort with two restaurants available to adult guests of The Rarotongan;

• Bluewater Grill featuring a wide range of fresh game fish and seafood as well as traditional favourites; and
• Ginger Garden featuring the international favourites from the cuisines of Asia including Teppanyaki, Wok, Steamboat and Mongolian BBQ

The Bluewater Grill and Ginger Garden are open for dinner from 6pm to 9pm.

If you are dining with children the menus from the Blue Water Grill and Ginger Garden can be ordered and served in Captain Andy’s Beach Bar & Grill.

Rarotonga is also host to an exciting array of restaurants located around the island. The range of cuisine varies from Italian, Indian to seafood and everything in between. Each restaurant offers its own individual ambience perfect for relaxing at the end of another day in Paradise.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we hope to be able to welcome you back to The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa again.

What a beautiful place The Rarotongan is!!! Well hidden from the road and so private once inside the premises. Loved the loungers on the beach for anyone's use, the snorkelling here is excellent, loved seeing the horses being ridden along the beach front, the kids loved the pool and kayaking also available. Staff were very friendly tom us. Only downer is the price of food, quite expensive for Toasted cheeses or burgers, but it was tasty!! We loved spending some of our days here. Thank you.

Kia Orana Yvonne600,

Thank you for your review in regards to your recent stay with us at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa

Set on Aroa Beach, Rarotonga's most beautiful white sandy beach on the shores of Aroa Lagoon (the Lagoon of Love), The Rarotongan is located on the island's sunshine southwest coast where guests can enjoy all-day sun, stunning sunsets, all-tide safe swimming and excellent off-beach snorkelling in the traditional marine sanctuary directly in front of the resort.

Expansively laid out amidst six acres of lush tropical gardens featuring hibiscus, banana and coconut palms, all of The Rarotongan's one hundred and nine rooms, suites, honeymoon bungalow and 3 bedroom pool villa are no higher than two storeys and are either set on absolute beachfront or in very close proximity to the beach, and feature an authentic Pacific aesthetic combined with the charm of Polynesian-style architecture.

The Resort offers a wide range of exciting recreational, sporting and cultural activities, many focused on the lagoon itself which is a marine sanctuary (ra’ui), declared by traditional leaders on 1 March 2000 for the conservation of marine life within the zone. Consequently the all tide snorkelling in Aroa Lagoon, a fish breeding area, is exceptional with an amazing variety of fish and the very best available on Rarotonga.

The activities staff are happy to assist with providing beach towels and equipment for Resort activities such as snorkelling masks and flippers, reef shoes (essential if you’re exploring the magnificent marine reserve), kayak paddles, tennis balls & racquets, tennis court bookings, volleyballs, petanque and a wide variety of board games, plus extensive local knowledge.

However in reference to your comments regarding the cost of meals, it is important to note that although we use as much local produce as possible, some ingredients still need to be imported from overseas – but our prices are still competitively priced with other restaurants and hotels on the island and the South Pacific.

Once again thank you for your review – we hope to be able to welcome you back to The Rarotongan in the near future.

The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa was the location for my daughter's March 2012 wedding. The Resort wedding planner, Laisa Browne, was absolutely amazing. Laisa has the planning down to a fine art; nothing was too much trouble and her vast experience in coordinating functions meant that the ocassion ran smoothly and was completely stress free. Our 70 guests were treated to a wonderful wedding celebration; the venue (Treetops) looked beautiful, a stunning selection (and amount) of delicious food, the bridal flowers were gorgeous and the wedding cake simple but moist and perfect for an island wedding.
My family stayed at the resort's Villa Onemaru; a 3 bedroom villa with private pool, fantastic sound system, located a few hundred metres down the road from the resort. This was perfect for entertaining our wedding guests; we held the hens party (prior to a bus trip around the island) and also a post wedding get to-gether the day after the wedding. We visited the main resort for breakfast each day where the food selection was good; the fruit selection included avodados and the best passionfruit I have ever eaten (yum!!). The resort restaurant probably could do with a make over but as long as your expectations aren't too great then you'll be very happy.
A SPECIAL THANKS to Laisa for a memorable, beautiful wedding ocassion that we will always treasure.

Room Tip: The Villa Onemaru was fabulous for a family wedding or get-together. If staying in the main resort...

Went to Rarotonga for a family hol on 24 Dec til early Jan2012. Great place to stay for a holiday esp with children ....... the adult part only part has great pool we visited in the evening for a drink at the pool. We stayed inthe main resort as had a 4yr old and had 6 adults as well. Best place to stay and experience the beautiful island of rarotonga. The rooms we had were right by the water so could get up and head for the water wheneva we wanted and the beach is well cared for by the staff. You must stay at the Rarotongan was great. Will be going back there for sure.
The staff were very helpful and we hired cars from the hotel and booked tours from there also.
Loved the place and the staff. Memorable holiday and weather was great only 1 wet day in 9days

Room Tip: Ground level beachside rooms are amazing and right next to the wedding area

Rarotonga Cook Island is an amazing place for a family vacation. Locals are friendly and the country is beautiful. However the Rarotongan Resort was very disappointing with poorly maintained rooms - we had 4 interconnecting rooms for 8 nights each for our family reunion. Air conditioners malfunctioned on numerous occasions and despite maintainence called to fix. Console was extremely dusty in all rooms. Had to request for towels as we were only given one replacement towel despite requiring three. I had requested possibility of later checkout until noon for ONE of the rooms (for free please) so our family can have somewhere to rest prior to our flight departure later that night - was informed they have strict policy requiring payment for later checkout - $95 for 2pm checkout, which we politely declined, thank you. At check-out, was informed that we have not paid our accommodation despite full upfront payment made at time of booking! Thankfully I had email evidence of payment on iPad - I was offered 'free' two minute Internet access to kindly on-forward copy of this email to the hotel - told them not happening and to sort this out themselves. Would NOT recommend Rarotongan Resort to anyone - better options elsewhere eg Pacific, Crown, or try rentraro.com for your various budgets. Shame as staff manning the activities and restaurants/bar are great.

Kia Orana Rowllygan,

Thank you for your recent review in regards to your recent stay with us at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa.

We are pleased that you enjoyed the service provided by our Food & Beverage and Activities staff during your stay.

We are disappointed to read you experienced issues with your air conditioning units during your stay. I am pleased to confirm that the air conditioning units for your rooms have now been replaced during a refurbishment program recently completed at The Rarotongan.

We have also raised your comments with regards to the towels provided with our Executive Housekeeper. As a result of your feedback we have revised our housekeeping operating procedures and increased our stock levels for toweling to avoid incidents of this nature repeating.

Late check-outs can be requested via our Front Desk however, these can only be confirmed subject to availability and only 24hours prior to departure. Our standard check-out time is 10am however, for NZ$95, guests can book a late check-out until 2pm and NZ$15 per hour after 2pm. We appreciate that you felt a complimentary was justified however, the rooms you had booked required to be serviced in preparation for guests arriving the same day of your departure.

I do apologise for the inconvenience experienced upon your departure in regards to your account payment details – we have implemented new systems to ensure that all payment information is received and attached to guest booking files prior to arrival which will ensure that this does not happen again.
