“Very Peaceful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

A very nice resort, in a handy location, very peaceful. did find it quite a small resort, hwoever you have full use of the rarotongan resorts facilities & activities. Breakfast was very basic, but this seemed to be the case everywhere. Pool bar was only open from 11am-6pm, and also this area also doubled as the restaurant, activities hut, and reception. great area to snorkel, however check the tide times as we were there with low tides during the day and we kept on bumping into things while trying to swim/snorkel.

Room Tip: we stayed in 700 block. try to stay away from 600 block as is very close to restaurant area.

Thank you for your wonderful review in regards to your stay at our adult’s only boutique resort, Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach in April 2013.

We are delighted that you had such a lovely holiday and enjoyed the fantastic location, services and friendly staff at Sanctuary Rarotonga ~ sister resort to The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa (located directly adjacent) and Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa (located on it’s own private island on the Motu Akitua in Aitutaki).

Sanctuary Rarotonga is a beautiful island destination for those looking for R&R in a relaxing tropical location but also priced competitively with other similar resorts on the island and in the South Pacific. It enjoys magnificent views at it’s doorstep of the amazing traditional Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve (or locally known as “raui”).

Sanctuary Rarotonga offers 48 Beachfront Suites – all of which are located directly on Aroa Beach. Guests located in our ground floor Beachfront Suites are able to walk straight out of their rooms straight onto the white sandy beach, however many guests also enjoy the sizzling sunsets over Aroa Beach from their first floor Beachfront Suites :)

Not only does Sanctuary Rarotonga offer two fantastic dining options, the Bluewater Grill – a tropical “sand between your toes” dining experience and our Ginger Garden Asian Restaurant with delicious teppanyaki style cuisine, guests are also able to take full advantage of the facilities and services available at The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa located directly adjacent.

Our complimentary daily tropical breakfast served in the Bluewater Grill from 7am until 10am includes a selection of fresh and preserved seasonal tropical fruits, cereals, juices, tea, coffee, freshly baked bread and pastries, jams and spreads. Guests are also able to order a selection of cooked breakfast items from our a la carte menu or try our daily changing cooked breakfast special which includes breakfast items such as island frittatas – a diverse range of dining options to suit all tastes.

In regards to the tides, a daily Guest Newsletter is distributed to all guest rooms and includes information such as the activities program for the day as well as weather forecasts. A schedule of tides is posted daily on our Guest Notice Board.

Once again, we would like to thank you for your wonderful review and hope to be able to welcome you back to Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach as a valued return guest in the near future.

We spent 3 nights in the Sanctuary. The room was clean and spacious with a lovely view over the beach. Bed was very comfy. Great pool area where you can have drinks and lunch. Breakfast was fruits, cereals and pastries with an option to purchase hot food. The restaurant served delicious food at a reasonable price for a resort but sadly lacked any atmosphere. They have a singer during dinner we both felt that the music was more of our parents era (for people in their 70's!) than ours. We had to pay a surcharge for everything we ordered on Good Friday which I thought was unfair as we were guests at the hotel. The resort as a whole is not as luxurious as it is made out to be in the brochures. Wouldn't stay there again.

Maybe it is because we had just been staying at Etu Moana. Maybe it is because this was our once in a lifetime honeymoon to the Cook Islands (from the UK) and we'd been hoping for the very best. Regardless, we were disappointed and wished we'd spent a little more and stayed at the Little Polynesian instead.
Reasons for our disappointment:
Booked airport transfers well in advance. Arrived at 8pm and no one was there to pick us up. Luckily we managed to get a taxi - otherwise we could still be there!
Transfers are stupidly expensive $110 for 2 people, return in a shared bus. A private taxi was only $80 and if you time it right, the bus is just $16.
When I asked the receptionist what had happened, she admitted the transfers were booked and on system but offered no apology and just offered to cancel them. Well, we were there already so of course they should be cancelled!
Breakfast - coffee was always stewed. It you got there 9:30am or later, nothing was replenished. Fruit was nice but often had flies trapped in the serving dish with it. The main issue was that tables weren't cleared so it was hard to find somewhere to sit. When it was cleared, it wasn't relaid so you just had whatever the guest sat there before you had left - e.g. The odd knife or fork, old napkin, crumbs on table, stained tablecloth. It just felt dirty.
Resort needs updating and a good clean!
Apart from one or two standout members, staff were not very helpful or even happy. This was a shock as every other person we met in the Cook Islands was so friendly and helpful.
Pool was broken at the Rarotongan and Sanctuary pool was green when we arrived. When asked what had happened, one staff member told us the pipes were broken and to just use a lilo rather than swim and another told us it was because they were adding salt to the water which was not true. And that we should just swim in the sea instead. Not what we wanted to hear! I think it's a case of staff customer service training being required. We had decided we wanted to leave as this was a once in a lifetime honeymoon trip for us. The Manager was very helpful and listened too us. She offered an upgrade to the honeymoon bungalow at the Rarotongan for one night then to the Sanctuary honeymoon spa suite for the last 2 nights. It was very nice of her to do this for us but it was still not great. If I'd paid $700 for the bungalow, I'd have been disappointed. We found empty beer bottles out the back, a rusty saw on the clothes hanger, graffiti on one of the trees, etc.
As we were staying for 5 nights, we were meant to get a bottle wine. Even this became a chore - it should have been there when we checked in - along with the voucher for the free hydrotherapy session. We were told we couldn't get this as we'd booked through a travel agent (???) then after checking with management after we insisted, we were offered red wine (we asked for white) and were argued with further. Luckily a more senior and helpful member of staff overheard and sorted it our for us straightaway.
The hydrotherapy session isn't really therapy or a treatment. It's use of the pool and jacuzzi in the spa for an hour. It was nice but not what we expected.
Easter - service charge of 10% was added to everything regardless of whether you went to the bar or not. We asked why and were told it was due to it being Good Friday and covers the extra pay for staff having to work then. Why are guests having to cover this? The hotel should cover it - even if they have to increase room rates on those days. It seemed pretty sneaky to us.
The resort is fine if you live nearby and it hasn't cost over £2.5k to get there and you aren't on honeymoon. It would work better as a mid-range all inclusive. The beach has great snorkelling but it's a shame that the masks provided a a bit rubbish. Location is not great (except for the sea/snorkelling) - there is more in Muri or if you want more isolation, stay at the Little Poly.
Sanctuary is not luxury and perhaps it is our fault for having expectations that were too high.

Room Tip: Request a downstairs room so you have direct access to the beach

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach in March 2013.

Congratulations on your recent wedding nuptials and thank you for choosing the Cook Islands as your honeymoon destination. We are delighted that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay in Aitutaki – only a 40minute flight away from the main island of Rarotonga.

We do apologise for the inconvenience you experienced with airport transfers upon your arrival in Rarotonga from Aitutaki. This incident was investigated in detail with our contracted transfer service company and the issue was resolved with their respective team.

Airport transfers are available for guests to book through our resort staff at NZ$55 per adult return. This includes a fresh flower lei on arrival or shell on departure, chilled bottled water and cold towels. Alternatively, guests are certainly able to utilise the public bus system (which as you have mentioned would need to coincide with the hourly bus schedule). There are also taxis available for all international flights by the arrival lounge. The costs of taxis can vary depending on the number of people travelling and luggage being transported.

A complimentary daily Tropical Breakfast Buffet (Continental Breakfast) of a variety of seasonal island fruits, homemade yoghurt, fresh-baked muffins, Danish pastries, croissants, toast, spreads, tropical juices, tea & coffee, is served for your enjoyment in the Blue Water Grill Restaurant from 7am to 10am daily. Guests can also select from a variety of cooked and light breakfast options from the Breakfast Menu.

We are surprised regarding your comments on our team of staff as we receive many compliments from guests that find our staff the highlight of their stay.

In regards to the condition of the swimming pools upon your arrival – at the main swimming pool at The Rarotongan, emergency renovations / repairs was required due to a leak which was placing pressure on an already stretched water supply on the island. The Sanctuary pool was also being treated the same day as your arrival and I understand it was available for use the following morning. We apologise that this information was not provided in a better manner at the time.

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to your review and can assure you that we are actively working with our staff and management to address each of the issues to avoid further instances of this nature in future.

We went to the Sanctuary on the Beach for our Honeymoon in February. We went with an open mind and weren't too concerned with what to expect because the price was pretty good. We stayed for 5 nights and really enjoyed ourselves. The pool was lovely, the room was a great size and had everything we needed. The view was like the dreamy billboards you see when you're stuck in awful city traffic....blue water, white sand, hammocks, palm trees. My husband knocked coconuts out of the tree and we'd open them and pour it straight into our malibu and pineapple juice....it was heaven! The staff were friendly but we sometimes had to really prompt them to help. The food was a little hit and miss, but that's not we were there for so we didn't mind. It was great being able to wander over to the Rarotongan, we spent a couple of evenings over there. Overall we had a wonderful, relaxing stay and we would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: We checked this section out before booking so we knew to request a downstairs room in the 700 block...

We stayed at the Sanctuary for the first time in March 2013. We have previously stayed at the Rarotongan and enjoyed it very much. This time we visited Rarotonga, we decided to stay on the adult only side - the swim up bar was a big attraction.

The room was very nice, with a king sized bed, and balcony overlooking the water. The sliding mirrors in the bathroom were an interesting touch, and the room was well appointed with a safe, jug, TV & DVD player, iron, hairdryer, etc. The air conditioner was mounted directly above the bed but it was disconcerting to have the cooler air blowing on and off (as the thermostat stopped and started the air conditioner) all night.

The location is fantastic. The views from the room are amazing, and the snorkling is really good. There are several restuarants/shops/takeaway places nearby (although not really within easy walking distance). I particularly liked how the reception/restuarant/bar area had no walls and was all completely open. The pool was lovely, surrounded by lots of greenery and good seating.

Unfortunately the service really put a damper on the trip. We travelled with two other couples, all mid-to-late 20's and we were there to have a good, relaxing time. Sadly, the staff at the Sanctuary seem opposed to people having fun - we were told to 'Shhh' several times when swimming in the pool approximately 9pm one evening, and the reason for this was that we "must be considerate for other guests" (some of the accommodation is very near to the pool). Although we were having fun, laughing and talking, we were not acting obnoxiously, we were not over-the-top loud, nor were we intoxicated. We all felt quite disbelieving that the bar staff felt as though they could speak to us in the manner that they did. Sadly the hotel seemed unable to take this advice themselves, and we were bemused to see karoke loudly start up the next night at 9pm - right beside the pool and guest rooms.

We were also quite disappointed that the bar on the Sanctuary side of the resort refused to serve anything other than canned soft drinks or beer after 9pm - we took to keeping some bubbly in our rooms and bringing a glass down to the pool with us in the evenings - the only other alternative was to go to the bar on the Rarotongan side of the resort, which was a particularly unattractive option due to the pool & poolside seating area there being closed for maintenance.

Although the overall experience we had on our holiday in Rarotonga was one of enjoyment, I would not recommend the Sanctuary if you are in the late-20's to early-30's age range. The staff were dismissive of us, and we felt as though we were being 'naughty' swimming in the pool in the evenings. As I paid over $NZ2,000 for my six night stay at the resort, I found this attitude to be quite unbelievable. The staff do not seem to realise that tourists' expensive holiday accommodation choices result directly in their ongoing employment!

As I had firmly recommended The Rarotongan/Sanctuary to our four friends, I feel particularly let down. If only the resort service had been good, it would have been a perfect trip.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the pool/bar/restuarant area.

Thank you for your review in regards to your stay with us at our adult’s only boutique resort, Sanctuary Rarotonga-on the beach and sister resort to The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa and Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa.

We are very happy that you enjoyed your previous stay with us at The Rarotongan so much that you decided to return to stay with us once again, this time at our newest sister resort. Many guests, like you also enjoy the fantastic location and facilities that Sanctuary Rarotonga has to offer including the swim up pool bar, stunning Beachfront Suites and its location on the traditional Aroa Marine Reserve “raui”.

We apologise that you did not feel that the service standards met your expectations. Our staff certainly did not intend to come across the way you interpreted and according to reports from our Front Desk and Security staff, they were responding to requests from other guests who had asked for the level of noise to be lowered.

Also Karaoke is not held at Sanctuary Rarotonga, but at The Rarotongan in Captain Andy’s Bar which is a fair distance from the closest guest rooms. If the volume of our Karaoke activity does affect guests in their rooms, the noise is reduced immediately. We do try to ensure the comfort of each and every one of our guests during their stays with us and if we do receive reports or concerns – we work hard to resolve issues as quickly as possible and with minimum inconvenience or discomfort to all involved.

We apologise that you were only able order soft drinks and beer after 9pm during your stay. This is not normal practice and the Sanctuary Bar is open for full bar service until at least 11pm.
It appears that your stay coincided with our emergency renovations to our main swimming pool at The Rarotongan - I am pleased to advise that our brand new Waterfall Swimming Pool has been a popular attraction for those looking for recreational leisure as well as a relaxing location in the tropical sunshine.

We appreciate that you recommended Sanctuary Rarotonga to your group of friends and we have many young adults that have thoroughly enjoyed their island escape and Sanctuary Rarotonga experience.
