“Food average, Service terrible”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

This was our 3rd and probably our last visit to this lovely pub and this is dissapointing. As a family with school age kids we very much value good local pubs, indeed this latest visit was to celebrate our eldest daughter getting a very good school report. I haven't any issue with the price of the food, indeed two Sirloin steaks and a bottle of red wine for £21.95 is excellent value, but the steaks were dry and overcooked when we had asked for rare, the chips were a bland frozen variety.
The biggest dissapointment is the consistently bad service, especially with our waitress who we have had serve us on two occasions now, the first time we could understand as the pub was busy but to wait for an hour after ordering is never acceptable. This time however the pub was not busy and to our pleasant surprise the food arived promptly albeit the steaks as descibed earlier but the kids were happy with their food. After the main course plates and cutlery were cleared, we discussed with the children what they would like for dessert and having all decided we waited and waited and waited a bit more until it got to the point we decided to leave. I was not prepared to go to the bar and order as it is table service and also I didn't feel inclined to put anymore money into their till. While paying at the bar! we noticed that the afore mentioned waitress obviously had a friend sitting opposite the bar and was engrossed in conversation hence the reason for her lack of attention. We asked to confirm that it was the procedure to order food at the table (knowing it was) and were greeted with a rather couldn't care less "Yeah sorry about that"!. The kids were really dissapointed not to have any desserts as it was a bit of a treat for them and we came way annoyed and deflated, agreeing never again. Why in this country do we so often receive sub standard service? an American would have gone nuts in the same situation and whilst I appreciate that being a waitress is probably not a long term career prospect, they could at least care!.

“Perfectly acceptable and pleasant - Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

We went on spec last Saturday evening and just got a table for two.
Considering how busy it was, the service was quite quick. We shared two starters, Scallops with black pudding and mushrooms with stilton, two mains, belly of pork and rump steak. All were delicious.
Some real ale and two large glasses of white wine. I think it came to about £24 each which was very reasonable. Decor is a bit faded but kinda nice in a quirky way. Quite warm and welcoming. This is a regular restaurant, not pretending to be fancy. I won't rush to go back as there are many similar places about. However, it is a nice place for a family party. Definitely good value for money.

“Food: Good (ish) - Service: non-existent!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

The Waterwitch is extremely good value for money but if you want to go there, make sure you allow plenty of time as the service is absolutely dreadful.

Four of us went to the Waterwitch last Saturday for their very good value "Steak Special" at just under £20.00 for two steaks and a bottle of wine. The steak was delicious but sadly my Sticky Toffee Pudding left a lot to be desired.

The restaurant was quite busy which you would expect on a Saturday night at 7.30pm but it appeared that one/two over-worked waitresses were handling the whole restaurant so after waiting more than half an hour to order, we eventually went up the bar and were told a waitress would be along shortly to take our order. Another 15/20 minutes later, the waitress eventually arrived but in the meantime we'd already gone back to the bar to order our own drinks as we were getting parched!

Another 45 minutes later, the meal arrived which as I said above was good, especially the steak. When the pudding arrived I asked for our bill which did arrive very promptly but unfortunately after another half an hour of waiting, we had to go to the bar to request somebody to take our payment. This took another 10 minutes and we still had to go up to the bar as we were paying with two different cards and for some reason they couldn't bring the card machine to the table - bit strange!

We definitely won't be going back to the Waterwitch unless their level of service is improved. I also know of a large group of people who used to meet up there for a meal on a regular basis but have now re-located their get-togethers to another local restaurant due to the really poor service which unfortunately doesn't seem to get any better.

The Management of this restaurant need to jack up their ideas regarding service and should lay on extra staff for busy evenings or they will definitely be losing a lot more business. The service has never been particularly great but it's getting worse.

“Poor service again!!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

We have been before and the service was poor and said that if it didnt improve we would not go again. We waited almost one hour for our food and when you have four children they very quickly get bored. The service was poor and the food was not good either some of it was cold and some looked as if it had been kept warm for ages.We didnt want to make a fuss as we had my parents with us and they had come down from Cheshire to celebrate my daughters 18th birthday. It wasnt good.We dont intend to go back again.
