This was something my husband had seen on the list of things to do in Tobago on Tripadvisor, before our Divali long weekend in Tobago. My husband and three children aged 8, 11 and 13 have already been horse back riding... me? Nada... But I thought I would try this. 9 o'clock am we arrived at Buccoo (had to phone to get the last explanations again) to meet Veronika and Lennon and their five horses. Each and one horse is presented with name, character and story... and what characters and stories some of these horses have! You really feel Veronika wants you to understand that they treat the horses more like equals, with more respect than what is usual.. and you feel they really love the horses and love what they do. So, you ride on a very thin saddle, and the horses do not have any bit, only a nose band. There are no stirrups (? - metalic thing to put your feet in) either. Since you are going to bath the horse/ride in the water - expect to get wet until the waist. Good mosquito reppelent (you walk through mangrove) and sun protection are good. Sun is burning.
I didn't feel very secure and confident upon departure.. It actually moves a lot - and I squeezed the horse with my tighs until they were shaking. Luckily Veronika told me - just relax! And with good guidance and encouragement from both Veronika and Lennon, little by little I understood I actually could decide over this huge animal and get it to go where I wanted , or at least I had the impression.... They really have a personality these horses. The walk through the village to the beach is very calm and gentle - the horses following each other really nicely. I think they know the bathing is coming and look forward to it. The ride into the water was a bit scary for me (how is this going to go?), but I finally found out both me and the horse relaxed more in the water than outside. The motion of waves can get you a little off balance, but I found (and was directed) that there was a sort of handle to hold on the saddle... and geee! My horse (the mom, Jennifer) started to gallop in the water!!! Amazing feeling!! And what a scenery! Mangrove, beach, turquoise water, the nylon pool at far... Such a unique experience! Magical! Only sad our waterproof camera got its lens clouded up, so we don't have pictures of being in the water with the horses - camera's fault.. because if not, Veronika would have taken tons of pictures for us.
The other part of Veronika and Lennon's activity is 'Healing with the horses' - which is a non profit association to get kids without the means and handicapped kids to ride and experience life with horses. T-shirts are on sale, and donations are welcome. Work like this is very needed in T&T!
When we go back to Tobago, we'll do this again! A truly very special experience, with so nice people! I highly recommend it!
