In mid April I flew to Paris and rented a car for the trip to Normandie. Problem one was they had the car but when I asked for a map they looked shocked! I said yes "map" Sorry no map! I explained that I had to go to Normadie no one could help including three other agencies so please take your own map!!
The People of France: Not friendly, rude and drive worst then our east and west coast drivers combined. people yelling out the window at you and flipping you off--terrable.
In Paris it is worse I drove around the Arxch of Truimph and found the drivers mangling together like a derby of some kind?? So Paris was bad for me.
No one knew where Normadie was also? I asked in three different owns where it was from where I was and they gave three different answers?
I stayed in the town of Beayux which is just a lovely French town and was first liberated by the Allies on June 7th. Good shops and restraunts. Nothing has changed in this town since the fifteenth century.
The Churchill Hotel is a good place to stay, Rooms moderate and a good staff. Brekfeast in the morning was bread, cheese, ham and coffee!! it worked for me.
Driving the route from Gold Beach to Omaha Beach was slow since it rains much in April and May. Storms are frequent no wonder the Germans we would come on June 6th.
I found some old German gun implacemtns and finally drove through a lovely aqncient landscape of farms and barns. The hedgerows are still there and I was shocked that many of the ships the Brits sank in June 1944 were still there off Gold Beach.
Omaha Beach is shocking to see since I arrived at low tide when the Army came ashore. It is maybe 500 yards of sand with no cover until they reach the sea wall No cover at all with 88's trained on them and heavy and light howitzers as well as machine guns from the bluffs as well as mines in the sand and traps of all kinds. I can tell you it was a sad sight to see but inspiring also. The American cemetary was huge and took my breath away. I only spent one day on the beaches which was not enough. I missed utaj Beach and Point De Hoc since it got dark.
If you are an American you should go to Normandie!
But do not rent a car take a daily tour:)
