“Not only a fabulous place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

The Quintal House is not only a fabulous place to stay on Fogo Island due to its charm and location, but the owner, Nadine, makes one's stay even more unique by sharing her stories about the island and its history. With the arrival of the new Fogo Island Inn there are so many questions in visitors minds and Nadine willingly helps clarify many of the issues describing local sentiments and the hopes and dreams of the local people. My sweetheart, Heinz and I loved our stay here. As a former travel writer I can assure you this experience is one you will never forget! Patricia

The inn keeper was extremely charming and the rooms were well appointed and cozy. They have a lovely front porch where we shared a bottle of wine and watched the boats go by. The restaurant right beside the B&B was simply amazing (sorry can't think of the name). It didn't look like much from the outside be the food was incredible (high end).

Especially to wake up to everything that was available in the kitchen ... muffins, cereals, coffee, and the frig was full!! The Quintal House is also next door to Nicole's Cafe, which is much more than a cafe. Thanks for everything Nadine! We'll be back!! ...

Room Tip: There is a master bedroom, with its own bathroom, but I imagine you have to reserve early

A BIG thank you to Nadine. What a beautifully restored home, charming touches and we really appreciated the great selection of books. So nice to relax and sit in the parlour. Wonderful treasures from the sea decorated the house. Loved the independence of breakfast, again good selection of choices for all of us, especially the freshly picked blueberries, other fresh fruit etc. Nicole's Cafe next door was lovely for dinner.

Great location to use as a base to explore all of Fogo.

There are extremes in Fogo; new Inn and all. Quintal Inn is very well located ( I think it's better to be in Joe Batt's), meticulous, charming and quiet. The more-than-owner Nadine is very knowledgable on local issues, what you might like, and she really cares that you enjoy your stay. She is savvy and generous. I had not stayed in a B&B in some time, but it reminded me of house -sharing with best friends.
I like the self-serve BK style, because it's easy. You must stay in Fogo at least 3 + nights.
The ferry can be tricky if you don't do your homework. This is a must.

We greatly enjoyed our two nights at Quintal House, and Nadine played a huge part in this-, offering a comfortable home base and tons of local knowledge for guests to explore the fascinating culture and heritage of Fogo Island. Quintal House is well appointed, with a striking spiral staircase and a plentifully provisioned kitchen. Nadine lets her guests have the run of the kitchen, and the house, allowing them to come and go as they please. She stocks the fridge with milk, juice, yoghurt, butter, eggs, and unique local jams like bakeapple, and everyone makes their own breakfasts, which we found very convenient and homelike. The washer and drier is also available, a big plus. Nadine is from Fogo and knows everyone in Joe Batt's Arm. Like visiting a good friend.

Room Tip: Of the three rooms the best are the two at the beginning and end of the upstairs hallway. We had the...

We booked here based on the good Trip Advisor reviews and also the fact that it was a renovated house that looked really pretty. We weren't disappointed. The place is beautiful, the rooms beautifully appointed with sea glass, shells, and tons of art on the walls. Our only regret was that we were just there one night--we definitely wished we were staying longer.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Quintal House is a beautifully restored historic community structure whose original construction dates back to the mid 1800’s. The traditional heritage character and simple elegance of the house is accented with antique and modern functional furnishings and local artisan and craft pieces. This 3-story Heritage Guest Home currently has 3 rooms available, all with serene harbour front views. The house has a warm, ageless and charming character, tastefully decorated with a mix of old world charm and new modern comforts. All rooms have comfortable beds and are equipped with private baths for guest convenience. Quintal House offers quiet, calm, peaceful surroundings in a private, relaxing setting that is family friendly with both indoor and outdoor activities for the young and the young at heart. Situated in the heart of this quaint, picturesque fishing community, Quintal House is located next to Nicole’s Cafe, featuring fine traditional dining and cuisine, Wall Works local artisan shop and Growlers homemade ice cream shop. The Guest House is also located within short walking distance to the local boat dock and boat tour operations, Brett House Museum, traditional foot trails, berry picking patches and other community attractions such as coastal walking trails and remote artisan studios. Within short driving distance to beautiful Sandy Cove Beach and the Registered Heritage Community/District of Tilting, an Irish heritage community offering interpretive museums and scenic hiking trails. Located within the Labrador current from the North, Fogo Island’s geography is responsible for the parade of ice floe and icebergs that make their way South in the spring and early summer months along the Island’s North East Coast, allowing great views of these massive icebergs in spring and early summer months. An occasional winter visit to the Island by the great polar bear from the North, as well as frequent encounters in any season with the local caribou herd can be expected. An array of wildlife, waterfowl, plant life and berries can also be found on the Island. Breathtaking ocean shorelines and spectacular sunsets and sunrises are the geography and art lessons to be experienced here. Go beach combing on our shoreline, pick some berries, enjoy some hiking, take a boat tour, but most importantly meet some of our friendly locals who have a knack for ‘spinning a yarn’ (having a chat). Enjoy high quality entertainment, as these same Island locals have a unique musical and theatrical gift that is showcased at many of the on-going music festivals and theatrical events hosted throughout the year. ... more   less
