“Beautiful Restored Heritage Guest House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

How exciting it was to arrive at the Quintal House to discover that this beautiful heritage home had been totally restored with a tasteful combination of old artifacts, original floors and modern appliances. The bedrooms were so well appointed, the linens lovely and the bed was very comfortable. The living room was so welcoming with its great selection of local history books.
The location has a beautiful view of the bay and is very close to a great walking trail.
Nadine, the owner of the guest house was very helpful and made us feel very much at home.
The selection of food for a self serve breakfast was great. Homemade muffins and local jams, yogurt, fruit, juices, delcious bread, teas, coffee

My wife and I stayed at Quintal House and had a great time. The B&B was very nice and central, also right next to Nicole's Cafe which has great food. We had a great chat with Owner - Nadine about everything Fogo. We would recommend anyone visiting Newfoundland to make the effort to spend some time on this island.

Walking into Quintal House you can quickly tell that Nadine, the owner, has taken great pride in the restoration of this lovely 120+ year Captain's home. She has achieved the perfect balance of keeping the home's heritage while offering all the amenities a traveler would need. From the antique quilts, "water hoops" and old pump organ decorating the house; to fantastic beds, fully appointed kitchen and high-speed wireless, Quintal house makes you feel as though you have one foot in the old world and one foot in the new.

Nadine, herself, is lovely and one can tell she is very proud of not only what she has done with Quintal House, but also the charm that Fogo Island has to offer visitors.

I would highly recommend a stay to anyone looking to rediscover all the comforts of a simpler life.

You will travel back in time to simplicity and quiet. This is one of the loveliest B&B's I have stayed in. The owner/ operator, Nadine Decker is a formidable force of intelligence, knowledge, warmth and charm. You will be convinced that she is inextricably connected to the property, as she details the life history of the house as well as that of life in out-port Newfoundland. The property has been faithfully restored and is conveniently located adjacent to one of the areas best restaurants. Internet access but no television is an interesting and pleasant twist.

As a family of four traveling to Fogo Island for the first time, we were looking for somewhere special to stay on this special island. The Quintal House Heritage Guest Home does not dissapoint in any way. The standard of refurbishment, decor and management are of the highest quality and Nadine is an excellent hostess for visitors to the island. The location in Joe Batt's Arm is perfect and an ideal base to take in the delights of the area. The Quintal House is a Guest Home where guests are free to take in beautifully restored and furnished rooms and breakfast is a self-serve continental treat complete with fresh cakes and muffins. We loved our stay here and hope to return soon.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Quintal House is a beautifully restored historic community structure whose original construction dates back to the mid 1800’s. The traditional heritage character and simple elegance of the house is accented with antique and modern functional furnishings and local artisan and craft pieces. This 3-story Heritage Guest Home currently has 3 rooms available, all with serene harbour front views. The house has a warm, ageless and charming character, tastefully decorated with a mix of old world charm and new modern comforts. All rooms have comfortable beds and are equipped with private baths for guest convenience. Quintal House offers quiet, calm, peaceful surroundings in a private, relaxing setting that is family friendly with both indoor and outdoor activities for the young and the young at heart. Situated in the heart of this quaint, picturesque fishing community, Quintal House is located next to Nicole’s Cafe, featuring fine traditional dining and cuisine, Wall Works local artisan shop and Growlers homemade ice cream shop. The Guest House is also located within short walking distance to the local boat dock and boat tour operations, Brett House Museum, traditional foot trails, berry picking patches and other community attractions such as coastal walking trails and remote artisan studios. Within short driving distance to beautiful Sandy Cove Beach and the Registered Heritage Community/District of Tilting, an Irish heritage community offering interpretive museums and scenic hiking trails. Located within the Labrador current from the North, Fogo Island’s geography is responsible for the parade of ice floe and icebergs that make their way South in the spring and early summer months along the Island’s North East Coast, allowing great views of these massive icebergs in spring and early summer months. An occasional winter visit to the Island by the great polar bear from the North, as well as frequent encounters in any season with the local caribou herd can be expected. An array of wildlife, waterfowl, plant life and berries can also be found on the Island. Breathtaking ocean shorelines and spectacular sunsets and sunrises are the geography and art lessons to be experienced here. Go beach combing on our shoreline, pick some berries, enjoy some hiking, take a boat tour, but most importantly meet some of our friendly locals who have a knack for ‘spinning a yarn’ (having a chat). Enjoy high quality entertainment, as these same Island locals have a unique musical and theatrical gift that is showcased at many of the on-going music festivals and theatrical events hosted throughout the year. ... more   less
