I am writing this review for the remarkable staff at Chachagua because my obligation to them outweighs my real desire of keeping the knowledge of this place to myself. I spent 8 days there recently with my son as an early 16th birthday gift, primarily because of his interest in nature photography, and I wound up thanking him for the experience.
As a primary destination, Chachagua, in the central valley, offers an extraordinary glimpse of the real Costa Rica. The rainforest grounds are lush and serve as the starting point for some extraordinary hiking through a wilderness that may wear out your camera. We personally witnessed monkeys, toucans, sloths, multiple varieties of hummingbirds and some of the largest, most amazing butterflies and moths in the hemisphere. There is a naturalist on staff, a accomplished photographer and remarkable host, who lives there and will escort you on a night hike through the rainforest, an excursion that you would never have done on your own and won’t soon forget. Horse riding is also available at the resort’s own ranch, an activity we didn’t do, but friends there who did said it was one of the best experiences of their trip. Most of the food cooked at the open-air restaurant is grown there, fruit, herbs, veggies, eggs, etc., with an emphasis on freshness, organic production, and authentically cooked, delicious traditional cuisine.
As a base for active excursions, anyone at the front desk can arrange a variety of trips through the expert company Desafio. My son and I did the zip line, rafting, rappelling down a waterfall, hike to see the Arenal Volcano, and a slow nature cruise down the Cano Negro. All of them had their own unforgettable virtues but, invariably, our conversations at dinner returned to things we saw, heard, did or planned to do on the trails around our resort.
Which brings me to this. I must express my sincerest affection for the staff at Chachagua, especially Seyris, William and Christian. Authentically warm, caring and hardworking people who made our trip as relaxing and enjoyable as we could have hoped. It was truly hard to leave but effortless to express our desire to see them again. Please tell Canela that there's a boy in Chicago who really misses her.
