We loved our short stay of 1 night at the Tintern Old Rectory. Our rooms was well maintained and bathroom clean. We even had fresh cut flowers in our room. We had the two room suite, both rooms were very comfortable. We arrived late and did not have dinner planned with them, so they quickly gave us a great referral for a great place to eat. Breakfast was delicious with lots of options. Wish our stay was longer. Maybe next time.

A pleasant spot with views of the river and a short walk from the abbey. A couple of the rooms are 'dog friendly' which attracted us in the first place. The room was comfortable for us - and dog ! The hosts were friendly and a very useful source of local knowledge which helped us plan our days.
The most outstanding feature has to be the quality of the breakfast - probably the best 'full english' that we have ever eaten.

Nice couple running the B&B but the smell of dogs down stairs is overbearing (and that is saying something because we looooove dogs). On first impression we liked our room but the longer you were there the more you noticed. The bathroom was not clean enough; too many nooks and crannies with a build up of grim and the communal areas were tired and a bit grimy too. We were also only provided with two hand towels. This was clearly not an oversight on our host’s behalf because I have read another review who mentions the same. The breakfast was excellent, but the dank smell of dogs took from our enjoyment. It is a mediocre B&B charging full wack.

Room Tip: room overlooking the river

Hello MandM,
We are sorry that you found your visit to the Old Rectory disappointing. We find it a bit surprising that you found the smell of dogs overpowering as we rarely let our dogs out in the public area only allowing them out our guests ask to see them and then never upstairs. I am assuming that you were visiting when we had our pups recently as they were out more frequently when their new owners were coming to visit. Unfortunately pups being pups they do leave little presents for us to clean up. Anyhow the carpets in the living room have now been cleaned again and other guests since then have commented that they cannot smell the dogs at all.
Re the towels, no this is not our policy at all. We have oversize Eguptian cotton towels for the rooms but we have a limited set of towels (3 sets per room). We had had so many one night stays that our washing machine and dryer were working overtime. Unfortunately we forgot to take your towels out of the dryer while you were out at dinner and our apologies for that. Had you mentioned it you would have, with our profuse apologies, been given freshly laundered towels.
Re the cleanliness of your room. We were surprised as we try very hard to maintain a very high standard of cleanliness but thankfully you gave us a clue with your comment about nooks and crannies. We went around all of our rooms and looked very critically at all of our rooms and indeed we did find that the nooks and crannies did need attention. I can assure you that they have all been addressed now and we have changed our cleaning regimen so that they wont re-occur. We need to thank you for this.
Re the tired communal areas, I do find this surprising as every room in our house including the communal areas are redecorated from top to bottom every winter. Of course they do get a bit of bashing throughout the season (guest luggage etc.) but everything is painted from ceiling to skirting boards. we replaced all of our carpets last year and in the previous year we replaced our carpets in the communal areas with hard flooring. We have expensive Sanderson's wallpaper and curtains and as I said the walls, ceilings and woodwork is painted every year. Our house is decorated in period style and maybe this isn't to your taste but many guests comment on how luxurious and feel that they are stepping back in time to a bygone era and how much they love the feeling.
Again, we are sorry that you were disappointed with your stay, and do wish you would mention your frustrations when you were here so we could make up for any shortcomings you had found.
Our guests happiness is our foremost concern.

Don't be put off by main road and disappointing exterior and across road parking. No traffic on road at night. Rooms charming, 6' very comfortable bed with high quality bed linen, pair of arm chairs, kettle etc and TV. Small but spotless en-suite - loo with a view! Slept very well and woke to stunning view. Breakfast was superb with lots of fesh fruit/berries in salad and delicious top quality breakfast food - best bacon ever and even kippers if required. We had no need of lunch. Only stayed one night and would have been happy to stay longer. Really delightful B&B with charming hosts. Elderly with mobility problems need to be aware of short but steep walk up drive and a number of steps but OK with an arm to lean on. Take a torch if you will be returning at night. Re: previous review we saw no sign of dogs but heard one bark briefly when we returned at 11pm

Hi,

Lovely to meet you. We know the disappointing exterior was indeed a problem but eventually after painting it three years in a row we found out there was rising damp in the one section of the wall. We have hacked off the render injected the wall and re-rendered and painted this. We are now sepremly confident that we can able to grow wisteria up the walls without worrying about our previous problems.

Re. Access. We do send out with any bookings or enquiries our Access statement which does state the access issues to warn guests that those with mobility problems need to be aware of and as well we have installed new railings on our stairways to make access much easier.

And finally we are in the process (to be completed before this winter) whereby the entire driveway up to the front of the house will be lit up until midnight. Again in a 200 year old house everything takes time and money and effort to make right and we are endeavouring to it all as quickly as possible.

As always we take on board seriously any feedback we get as our real concern is that our guests are really happy (not just satisfied) and they feel that they have a real value for money experience. We are so happy though to hear that you enjoyed your visit with us and we hope to see you again.

My husband and I stayed here for two days on an anniversary trip to explore the Wye valley. The location is great, in the beautiful town of Tintern, and with a lovely view of the river from the breakfast room. Our room was spacious, well-stocked, and unique (and I mean that in a good way!) It's clearly an old building, but very well maintained and charming. Annika phoned to ask if I wanted to change to a different double room that she thought was better, and it was lovely - with its own back entrance (very useful after hiking in the mud - we could just take our boots off outside and walk right into the room). We'd definitely stay here again, hopefully for a bit longer!

We found the Old Rectory to be very friendly and accommodating. We struggled to find a place to stay for one night only but there was no problem with The Old Rectory who took a reasonable 50% deposit on booking.
There is limited parking accross the road for 4 vehicles, but the little parking lot allocated was big enough for four cars as long as everyone keeps within the marks. The walk to and from the hotel to the parking lot entails a steep climb to the property, is on a quite tight bend on the main road with limited pavement area and is relatively unlit at night,
The rooms throughout are very clean and fit in well with the character of the bulding.
Although we were only there for the one night, it was clear that nothing would be too much trouble for the people and any question we asked was answered with good, accurate knowledge.
It is true that the breakfasts here are very nice, with a large selection of cereals, juices and locally sourced meats.
There were 9 dogs in the house at the time we were there, although most of them were very cute little puppies .Obviously dogs of that age and number cannot go unnoticed especially to guests who do not normally live with dogs. One thing we did think was that where small dogs are running around and being boystrous, it is better if the person cooking the food was not the one picking the animals up between cooking and should try to maintain clean clothes / shirt etc on at least a dialy basis.
The Old Rectory is in an ideal location in which to explore the area, which has a surprising amount of things to see and walks to take and it has the added advantage of being only a 15 mins taxi ride (£10 - £12 depending on time of day) from Chepstow racecourse.
All in all a nice place, easy going and in a good location right next to the Moon & Sixpence pub.

Room Tip: We had the garden patio room which had a handy side entrance of its own (up some more steps) but was...

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.
We recognize that the lighting to the front of the house is not ideal and as replied to another comment we are in the process of installing new lighting all the way down the driveway to the road which will provide much better access visibilty.

Thankfully we no longer have 9 dogs as the puppies have all gone off to their new home and happy they are.

Re handling dogs. I can assure you that myself as the chef always have a sink full of hot soapy water and whenever I have to touch the dogs, for any reason, my hands go into the sink and get washed off before going near any food. I ran very large restaurants in Canada so am very much aware of food hygeine and gusess safety. We have never had any complaints about illness from any meals and our food is of the highest quality.

But all in all we are very happy that you enjoyed your stay at the Old Rectory and hope to see you again.

We've had many B&B breakfasts, variations on the 'full english'. It must be easy for a cook to get into a routine over the years, and produce something that's perfectly OK but undistinguished.

Not so here - everything was fresh and tasty; I can't remember having had a better one! It set us up well for the next section of Offa's Dyke path.

Hi,
We do pride ourselves on our breakfasts and are really glad you enjoyed it. Most of our produce comes from within 5 miles of our B&B and is really fresh. We bake our own bread and the combination of great 'local ingredients and our attention to cooking food well we think we do a pretty good job (By the way Lufthansa actually wrote a three page spread o our breakfast for their inflight magazine11111 Unpaid fo !!!! WOW. LOL.
